This is a well-researched, easy-to-read encyclopedic book of 150 healthy foods with pictures. The author describes why each of the foods is healthy and what beneficial nutrients are in the food. He also tells you what the food can be used to treat or prevent. There are starred entries for particularly healthy foods. The book has an informative glossary as well as an extensive index so you can find the food by its name or by what it can treat. The foods include some personal favorites such as almonds, yogurt, and blueberries, as well as some surprising foods such as peanut butter, raw milk, butter, eggs, chocolate, coffee, and various meats.

The 150 foods are arranged into logical categories in the chapters. The book's Contents are:
Chapter 1 Vegetables
Chapter 2 Grains
Chapter 3 Beans and Legumes
Chapter 4 Fruits
Chapter 5 Nuts, Seeds, and Nut Butters
Chapter 6 Soy Foods
Chapter 7 Dairy
Chapter 8 Meat, Poultry, and Eggs
Chapter 9 Fish and Seafood
Chapter 10 Specialty Foods
Chapter 11 Beverages
Chapter 12 Herbs, Spices, and Condiments
Chapter 13 Oils
Chapter 14 Sweeteners
Glossary, Index

This well-researched book offers detailed information on healthy foods as well as fun facts about many of the foods. It even discusses some food controversies. It is an interesting read and may encourage you to eat healthy foods you may not currently be eating. It is a great book for helping you to understand why it is important to eat healthy foods. I recommend this book along with a great companion book, THE THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams

I bought this book and it is a good guide line. Some people might need this for a good starting point.

But really all it comes down is restricting your calorie intake, getting off your hind end and exercising!

Glucose guide 2 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This was an interesting book but the downside was the products you would find at a grocery store were Canadian products. Products in the USA do not have a GI listing.

GI Values 4 out of 5 stars.

A pretty good resource... has a lot of name brand foods that I never heard of or we don't have here in good ole Mississippi.

Just a notebook 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I like the tips inside of this book, however, the pages to record things on are small, hard to write in it for me. I use Calorie King's calorie counting book almost daily. A personal journal works just as well for me.

very effective 5 out of 5 stars.

I really like this tool. The only negetive thing I have to say has more to do with me than the book, but if you cook from scratch alot, like I do, be prepared to do ALOT of math. It delivers what it says it does. No more "calorie amnesia"!

Food Journal 4 out of 5 stars.

Food Counts 5 out of 5 stars.

This provides very good info for ones who need to count there calories. I'm enjoying it.

mostly useless and far from complete 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book's data on fat and carbohydrates is insufficent for modern diets. It does has a lot of other useful data, some useless data, and is missing a lot of expected products.

The biggest problem is the way fat is listed. Saturated fat, unsaturated fat, and trans fat are all lumped into a single number for total fat. This makes the book inadequate for Atkins or South Beach dieters. You can't tell good fats from bad.

The listings show total carbohydrates, and dietary fiber, but they don't show net carbs, or sugar alcohols. This is important for dieters and diabetics since many of our specialty foods are sweetened with these substitutes. Of course, the book generally omits diet foods, so this may not matter.

There is no information about vitamins or minerals.

It does contain a lot of useful information about basic ingredients that are often sold without nutritional labels (for example, fresh meat and vegetables). There's also a lot of information about foods served at chain restaurants, which is useful for deciding to where to go.

The bulk of the data seems to have been copied from prepared food product labels. This isn't very useful, since I can usually just look at the package, though it is sometimes convenient. It's even less useful for the obsolete products.

A lot of obvious expected products are missing. I can't find any mention of diet soft drinks, diet meal bars, diet shakes, low-carb foods, or liquor. Beer and wine are mentioned, but in poor detail. Beer has only two entries: "regular" and "light". If they can devote 4 pages to different brands of fully-sugared soft drinks, they could at least tell us the differences between a stout and an india pale ale. Wine is a little better. They list desert, red, rose, and white. However, I find it difficult to believe a sweet white zinfandel has the same numbers as a dry chardonnay.

This book wasn't a complete waste of money, but I still want something better.

Editorial Review:

Pocket book for the supermarket 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This purse-size book is indespensible! It lists total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, fat, and calories to help you make the best choices, or even endulge a little while knowing how much you are doing so!

My copy is dog-eared and I carry it everywhere with me. When I think I might want something (like grapes, for example), I can look them up in the booklet right there in the supermarket and decide if they will fit into my diet plan or not. (The grapes were too high in carbs, in case you were wondering.)

The book also lists many common and name brand items, both high and low carb.

It is split into several sections such as beverages; milk, cream, butter, and yogurt; breads, muffins and crackers; fruit; pancakes, waffles, and breakfast pastries; poultry; sweeteners, jams, and syrups; etc.

It even has a section for "dining out" with tips on dining away from home, and a "fast food" section with counts for popular foods at fast food restaurants.

If you are watching either your fat or your carbs, you need this book!

Editorial Review:

Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter has a slightly misleading name. While grams of carbohydrate are listed for various foods, there are also protein and fat grams listed for each entry. With more than 1,200 listings, including hundreds of brand-name products, this makes a handy, portable reference. It should be noted, however, that that the Gram Counter is really meant as a companion to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution; the brief dietary information included in the introduction to the Gram Counter isn't of much use by itself.

Everything you ever wanted to know about your blood type 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Not only did I learn where in world history my blood type "originated", but I also know now why a low-carb diet has been the best thing to ever happen to me. The low-carb lifestyle concentrates on eliminating certain foods from my diet, and those foods just so happen to be bad for me as a type O anyway! It's great! In the same vein, the reason low-carb did not work for my type-A husband is because the food we thought he was supposed to be eating was the same food that can be "poison" for his particular blood type. Problem solved! This book was very helpful to us both.
