Revealing Why Americans Are Getting Fatter! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This counter is just what is needed to track the sugar in our foods-especially in the fast food department. Excess sugar was the culprit in my pre-osteoporosis, teeth problems & acidity of the stomach. I feel so much better since I have cut down on sugar. This book is the only one I have found that counts sugar in grams & teaspoons.

Editorial Review:

The average American consumes nearly 150 pounds of sugar and other sweeteners a year. Many people are dangerously addicted to sugar, putting them at risk for a host of diseases and conditions including hypoglycemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, allergies, obesity, tooth decay, and more. While many sources of sugar are quite obvious (cookies, candy, soft drinks), hundreds of processed foods have hidden sugars that are often the real cause of trouble for people trying to improve diet and nutrition.

Lick the Sugar Habit Sugar Counter exposes the sugar content of thousands of brand-name and generic food items, including fast foods. The counter lists sugar content in both grams and teaspoons, plus caloric values, as well as breakdowns of simple and complex carbohydrate components.

This handy book is the perfect pocket-sized companion for grocery- store shopping and restaurant outings. Learn where the sugar is and lick the sugar habit.

Primarily lists low-fat and "lite" foods. 1 out of 5 stars.
37 of 39 people found this review helpful.

Of all the fat/calorie/cholesterol count books I've seen, this has been the least helpful. The inclusion of brand names for the listed food items is nice, however the vast majority of foods are those already reduced, or naturally low, in fat and calorie content. Thus comparisons cannot be made with non-diet versions. Unless these are the ONLY foods you consume, you will still need to reference another source to calculate your fat and calorie consumption.

BUYER BEWARE 1 out of 5 stars.
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I should have read the cover in greater detail. Most importantly, the book contains ONLY those foods which meet ALL the AHA criteria for total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol. So when there is no listing for scallops, is it because they exceed the guidelines, or because they are too exotic? A few items ARE included at the beginning of each section under "items you want to limit or avoid". Not the book if you are ever willing to eat something outside the guidelines (or make the best of limited choices). I prefer being able to eat a smaller quantity if I know the fat value, for example, is high. And as I should have known by the title, the focus is on brand names - ad infinitum. Editorially, it is difficult to follow the internal category indexing - would be helped by a dictionary - style reference at the top of each page giving the major index. Other problems, such as "seafood" listed after "turkey" within the "meat, poultry, seafood, and Meat substitutes" section, but NOT because the categories are separated. I think I'm going to buy the USDA Handbook No. 8 for a good generic reference book.

Editorial Review:

A food counts guide lists total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and calories for more than four thousand brand name products and is organized into supermarket categories for easy reference. Original. 150,000 first printing.

You Don't Need Another Calorie Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
46 of 46 people found this review helpful.

I have many books that count calories, fats, and carbs. They are usually too big to lug around or dont have many of our favorate foods listed as we know them, making them a chore to use. This is the only calorie counter you will need, its small and surprisingly has 99.9% of the foods we are eating at your fingertips. Unless u are a Doctor, this book will be fine for your everyday use. I have several other calorie books and this one is the one I USE daily.

Editorial Review:

This guide contains the best and most complete information available in a pocket counter. It was written as a reference to make healthy food choices. About 3,000 commonly (and not so commonly) eaten foods are grouped into easy-to-find categories and then listed alphabetically allowing the reader to track calories, carbohydrates, carb choices, protein, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and fiber. Charts and tables are included to determine daily nutrient goals. HealthChequesTM Carbohydrate, Fat & Calorie Guide helps people with everyday nutritional concerns such as estimate daily nutrient needs, determine carbohydrate grams, define number of fat grams by calorie level, confirm the number of calories used during various activities and gives records to track blood lipid (cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglyceride) levels. Categories also include brand-name products, fresh foods, vegetarian dishes and many more, listed in an easy-to-use format.

Editorial Review:

“Eat Different without Seeming Different”.
Help for Children Who Can't Eat Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Corn, Soy, or Nuts.

That’s the goal of this positive, upbeat guide to helping families with allergic or celiac children––and the children's caregivers––manage food sensitivities to wheat, dairy, eggs, corn, peanuts, soy, and other common food allergens.

Written by a mother whose child can't eat wheat or dairy, this book offers practical advice for families of allergic or celiac children, including:

• Latest research and discoveries on food sensitivities

• Advice on reading labels, grocery shopping, and eating out

• Tips on emotional, social, and psychological considerations so your child doesn't feel set apart from others by his food sensitivities

• Pointers to help your child enjoy parties, field trips, and outings

• How to avoid hidden food allergens (Did you know that licorice contains wheat?)

• 100 kid-tested & approved recipes that make your child's food look and taste just like everyone else's

• Plus valuable cooking advice on successfully using substitutes for wheat, gluten, dairy, or eggs. (For example, did you know that flaxseed meal boiled in water makes a great egg substitute in baking?)

• Extensive resources such as mail-order addresses for hard-to-find ingredients, Internet sites, and discussion groups.

The end result is one convenient, easy-to-read, resource-filled volume gleaned from parents of food-sensitive children around the world––as well as the children themselves, who have found that a diet that doesn’t make them sick shouldn’t make them feel different, either.

Secrets of Fat Free Greek Cooking 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The lamb dishes are OK, but most of everything else does not have the authentic Greek flavor. Does not taste very good after having had the real stuff.

Well written book of fantastic recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is really quite interesting, very thorough, and the recipes truly are as about fat-free as you can get. Interestingly enough, a lot of them are also low carb as well. Very informative about Greek culture and customs as well. My only wish is that there were more recipes although there is enough presented to keep one busy for quite some time. I highly recommend this book. The author certainly knows how to invite strangers into her life (and to her table.) This books is exactly what it states it is and is truly a keeper.

Small section for restaurants 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have been seeking a book with cholesterol counts that details restaurants. This book does contain a section, but it is very small, and doesn't include many places I eat. If you're looking for information on non-restaurant food, you would probably enjoy this book a lot more than I.

Somewhat helpful 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is pretty much the only cholesterol counting book I've been able to find, and it is quite helpful with it's cholesterol and fiber listings. The frustrating part is there are no listings for total fat, saturated fat, and trans fat. Fats are a HUGE part of watching cholesterol! I had to buy the fat counter as well (which still has no listing of trans fats) to keep accurate track of my intake. I have to look up everything I eat in TWO books, big pain in the [...]. I know these authors have one huge book that covers both fats and cholesterol, but that one doesn't list any restaurants. But if you've got to watch your levels, it will help. I do angioplasty and stenting for a living and I've seen enough to know I don't want either!!!

Editorial Review:

A guide to improved health through reduced cholesterol features essential information on reducing the risk of coronary disease and other disorders, providing the fat content for more than ten thousand foods.

Four Great Books for the Price of One 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This volume combines four Covert Bailey's best selling titles: "The new fit or fat", "The fit or fat woman", "The fit or fat target diet", and "Fit or fat target recipes". These books give practical advice on exercise, training and diet, and it does so using a clear way and with a great sense of humor. A complete package that even includes a recipe collection to lose weight and stay fit.

When I bought this and a couple of other books, about six years ago, I was looking for an introductory reference on aerobic training, fat burning, and on the use of heart rate monitors for general fitness improvements, and wasn't disappointed at all, since what I learned really worked out for me: Armed with a Polar Heart Rate Monitor (the old M61) I was able to drop more than 200 lbs in about eight months, and the heart rate monitor training has helped me keep those lbs off for over six years. Not only I went fro size 44 to size 32 pants, but also obtained substantial benefits that included weight control, cardiovascular improvements, lowered blood pressure, and improved muscular-skeletal strength and flexibility, but also the myriad of mental and psychological benefits derived from being in the best shape of my life.

I especially like the chapter about measuring your own Fat and Fitness. The formula to estimate Body Fat Percentage is very useful if you don't have a Body Fat Scale or Monitor at Home. I used the formula, and other data that I found on several books to set-up an excel spreadsheet to monitor my progress, which gave me motivation to keep training smarter.

In short terms, based on my experience I can recommend this book, and it's a great reading as well.

Another tools you may want to consider, to complement this book and your strategies for boosting your metabolism, loosing weight, and even more important keeping that weight off are:

- A Body Fat Monitor or Scale. This will help you monitor your progress, to assure that the weight you are loosing is fat (fat lost = increased metabolism) and not muscle, water or bone mass (decreased metabolism).
- "Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss", which is another very practical, readable and insightful book, focused on how to boost your metabolism.
- "The Abs Diet: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Stomach and Keep You Lean for Life".
- A Heart Rate Monitor Wrist Watch. This is an excellent tool that will help you monitor and control your Heart Rate in order to keep yourself in a burning fat state (increased metabolism).
- "The Hard Body Guide". Excellent strategies, programs and workouts, aimed to increase your muscle mass.

If you are focused only on your diet, the first three may be worth considering. If you exercise, or want to start doing it right, the last two are for you. If you do both, all the four recommended options can improve your results.

Editorial Review:

Get with the program...and get fit! The Fit or Fat® series, with its' realistic diet and exercise plans, has sold more than 3.5 million copies--because it really works! So dieters will be thrilled to know that they can get four of these bestselling titles in one convenient volume. The New Fit or Fat, The Fit or Fat Woman, The Fit or Fat Target Diet, and Fit or Fat Target Recipes provide all the guidance anyone needs to make a lasting lifestyle change. They examine popular misconceptions about the "perfect shape," eating healthily, and exercising effectively. There are also plenty of tools for tracking your own progress, from food analysis charts to tables that break down the nutritional value of your favorite dishes.

A concise directory of all foods and nutrients. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book has a great listing of everyday foods and beverages that is easy for the average person to read. The portions are realistic and easy to plan from. Many foods are listed in several forms with calories, vitamins and minerals listed clearly.

I recommend this for any average person that doesnt have the time or energy to research their diet, but desires to be clearly informed.

I received the book after taking a course in nutrition through Washington State University Co-op Ext.

Great book on Cholesterol 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book on the subject of how to control cholesterol. The book is clearly written and it thoroughly explains the mechanism of cholesterol metabolism to the layman.

The various case studies are great too. The only criticism I have for the book is that it is not up to date in the latest treatments for high cholesterol.

Editorial Review:

This first and only authoritative mass market bestseller on cholesterol contains the most up-to-date, medically sound information on diet, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle--and their impact on coronary problems. Includes the latest information on determining a coronary risk profile, an all-new exercise program, low-cholesterol recipes and more. (Nonfiction)
