Much more than the others 5 out of 5 stars.
42 of 44 people found this review helpful.

I found that this book gave me more information about the foods than any other similar book. It told about the standard nutrients, but it also flagged those foods that were high in antioxidants, folate and calcium. There was a useful part in the begining that explained what all the nutrients were for. It is alot for the money.

Food Phobia's Friend 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was VERY helpful for someone like myself who is trying to get in shape. Although I used to count calories, my workout routine now calls for a close watch on carbohydrates and a higher intake of protein. I used to by the mini-mags in the grocery store with calorie and fat content. Those are impossible to find with carbs and proteins. This book was a god-send for me!

Editorial Review:

The most comprehensive calorie guide available, THE A-Z FOOD COUNTER is a complete nutritional evaluation of more than 10,000 foods, listing calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and sodium. Foods high in folic acids, antioxidants, and calcium are highlighted to help guide the health-conscious person to the best possible foods. It also includes a state-of-the-art reference guide, and recommendations from an authoritative nutritionist on how to eat wisely and well.

Editorial Review:

Eating junk food and fast food is a great all-American passion. American kids and grownups love their candy bars, Big Macs and supersized fries, Doritos, Twinkies, and Good Humor ice cream bars. The disastrous health effects from the enormous appetite for these processed fat- and sugar-loaded foods are well publicized now. This was particularly dramatically evidenced by Super Size Me (2004), filmmaker Morgan Spurlock's 30-day all-McDonald's diet in which his liver suffered the same poisoning as if he had been on an extended alcohol binge. Through increased globalization, American popular food culture is being increasingly emulated elsewhere in the world, such as China, with the potential for similar disastrous consequences. This A-to-Z reference is the first to focus on the junk food and fast food phenomena from a multitude of angles in addition to health and diet concerns. More than 250 essay entries objectively explore the scope of the topics to illuminate the American way through products, corporations and entrepreneurs, social history, popular culture, organizations, issues, politics, commercialism and consumerism, and much more. Interest in these topics is high. This informative and fascinating work, with entries on current controversies such as mad cow disease and factory farming, the food pyramid, movie tie-ins, and marketing to children, will be highly useful for reports, research, and browsing. It takes readers behind the scenes, examining the significance of such things as uniforms, training, packaging, and franchising. Readers of every age will also enjoy the nostalgia factor, learning about the background of iconic drive-ins, the story behind the mascots, facts about their favorite candy bar, and collectables. Each entry ends with suggested reading. Besides an introduction, a timeline, glossary, bibliography, resource guide, and photos enhance the text. Sample entries: A&W Root Beer; Advertising; Automobiles; Ben & Jerry's; Burger King; Carhops; Center for Science in the Public Interest; Christmas; Cola Wars; Employment; Fair Food; Fast Food Nation; Hershey, Milton; Hollywood; Injury; Krispy Kreme; Lobbying; Nabisco; Obesity; PepsiCo; Salt; Soda Fountain; Teen Hangouts; Vegetarianism; White Castle; Yum! Brands, Inc.

Editorial Review:

Named a top health book by Ladies Home Journal, The American Dietetic Association's Complete Food & Nutrition Guide teaches how to combine "good taste and good health" in every meal and snack. No matter how nutritionally impaired you think you are, you'll find clear, understandable information on the basics of metabolism and weight management, vegetarianism, nutrition for athletes, food allergies, and more. The section on eating during pregnancy and breast-feeding is absolutely essential reading for any mom-to-be, as are the chapters on feeding fussy toddlers. If you can't tell radicchio from daikon or don't know how to pronounce quinoa, the superb index will certainly come in handy.

The ADA takes a conservative stance on vitamin and mineral supplements, focusing instead on combining proper foods to maximize absorption, and there's little information about other supplements such as enzymes. But if you need help sorting the food fads from facts, the Complete Food & Nutrition Guide can't be beat.

A must-have for food exchange diet plans! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I'm on a food exchange diet plan, similar to the counts listed by the American Diabetes Association. This book is easy-to-use, listed by type of food and brand name. It's filled with 4,000 foods, including all the ones we typically buy. It has the necessary nutritional information & clearly listed food exchange values. It's a must-have tool for meal planning and taking to the supermarket, helping make good food choices from start to finish. Worth far more than the price - I recommend it whole-heartedly to anyone on a food exchange diet plan.

Where are my brands? 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

While this book is very helpful for anyone following an exchange-based dietary plan, many of the brands listed are unfamiliar to me. I assume they are regional. In addition, the most commonly used brands in my region are often missing from the book. That means I need to compare nutritional facts from each label with the products listed and make a note for the future. That's more work than I usually want to take on. However, this is a still a helpful book for my meal planning.

Editorial Review:

With less and less time available to cook at home, more and more people are turning to alternative sources for meals. Diabetes Convenience Food Menus is packed with helpful information such as nutrition facts on pre-prepared and packaged meals commonly available at grocery and convenience stores; how to prepare balanced, healthy meals using convenience foods; and sample menus using convenience foods.

12 Calories for a Teaspoon of Nutmeg! 5 out of 5 stars.
35 of 35 people found this review helpful.

What a gem "The Doctors Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" is!

This purse-sized book puts honesty into eating.

Essentially, it is a group of lists. You'll see the product name, and in three columns to the right of it, how many calories, fat and carbohydrates. The strength resides in its thoroughness. It seem as if the editors came in my neighborhood grocery store and took notes, cataloguing these stats from every item. There is even a calorie count for spices (a teaspoon of nutmeg has 12 calories!), as well as alcohol (you'll find your favorites brands, plus a general list).

There is a section on restaurants in general. Presuming, for example, red beans and rice is pretty much the same anywhere, we learn we'll be eating about 280 calories.

Disheartening is the restaurant chain section, from Applebee's to Zantiago. I was pleased to see how Boston Market did, but I see the stuffing and gravy on their turkey meal I love costs me an additional 430 calories.

There are some nutritional sections, explaining the fundamentals of a good diet, what fiber is all about and some discussion of sodium.

It is all very handy, and so I fully recommend "The Doctors Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter."
