Editorial Review:

Throw away your bathroom scale—the revolution in diet and exercise has arrived! Combat Fat! provides an easy-to-follow, straightforward method of diet and exercise that uses body fat percentage, rather than body weight, as the leading indicator of health and wellness. Readers will discover why body fat is the most important variable in the health equation and how they can measure and interpret their own body fat percentages. The authors present a flexible, 60-day diet and exercise plan that will meet everyone's individual needs—including those of vegetarians. The program is safe and all natural—no drugs or "fat burner" supplements are suggested. Combat Fat! provides critical information on how to "eat within the system" by choosing proper foods—even when it's fast food. Readers will learn to decipher food labels to avoid common mistakes and misconceptions. Detailed basic workout plans that are designed for the average man or woman comprise the Combat Fat! exercise program, with explanations given for three different intensity levels of weight training and cardiovascular exercise. The exercises require minimal equipment and can be followed at home. Americans can end their unhealthy obsession with weight loss by focusing on healthy body fat loss. Combat Fat! recommends safe, effective and realistic goals for those who want to shape up. 200 b/w photos.

Every living person should read this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

For the past couple years, I have been half heartedly avoiding trans fats. But mostly in the grocery store where labels can easily be read. Now I will re-double my efforts. And I am putting my money where my mouth is. I'm buying 120 copies from the publisher to give away to our 75 employees and a few friends, with a few left to sell in our hotel restaurant.

The historical perspective was great, but was I left wanting to see a little more technical / scientific data. It is an easy, quick read which I appreciate. I just wanted more scientific information to satisfy my curiosity. This is probably one of the least understood and most important issues facing people today. From all that I have read from this book and others, cutting out trans fats is absolutely crucial for good health.

I consider Jean Carper to be a little better nutritional writer because I think she is more direct. On my underlining test, I find myself underlining a lot more in Carper's books. But Judith Shaw is now on my short list of good authors writing about important issues. Occasionally she got a little wordy, but I would not call the book too wordy overall or verbose. It is relatively direct, and the subject matter is of utmost importance.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is still breathing and able to read. Thanks Ms. Shaw for researching and writing it.

Informative 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

You want to be healthy and fit. You want to live a long life. But you want to eat like a pig and sit on your la-z-boy too? Guess what? You can't!

This book is easy to read and informative. It had a lot of common sense sandwiched between medical know-how.

The THI scoring system is easy to follow, I think, and not too restrictive. You might not like the fact that eating at Denny's is out but I personally would rather live half a dozen years longer because I gave up the Grand Slam breakfast.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book and read it. Unlike so many other books on the market, Dr. Mogadam doesn't seem to be selling anything but the truth, and the price is very low!

Many impressionable children are at risk to a myriad of health problems caused by caffeine 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I suspect that a few Starbucks stock holders like Richard Johnson are attempting to discredit the author of this book, who among other things is the founder of the Caffeine Awareness Alliance, a not-for profit organization.

Excessive caffeine is awful for you and this book defines the risks taken when consumed.

Overzealous? - hardly. Historical? sure. Theoretizing? Nope, this book is packed with countless clinical studies to help you draw your own conclusion. I fully support her efforts.

So many impressionable children are at risk to a myriad of health problems caused by caffeine including ADD, hyperactivity, poor concentration and caffeine addiction.

It's interesting that Coca-Cola & PepsiCo started listing on their labels the caffeine content. I think the efforts of the author and her organization are paying off. Now only if the coffee industry followed this example that would be great (c'mon Starbucks)

Why I'd recommend this one 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I just got through talking to a local Poison Control director for research. Why? Because caffeine poisoning and reactions and concerns about caffeine have prompted many parents, teens and others to call these centers with symptoms that go beyond the usual jittery nerves and buzz of normal caffeine drinkers.

To be honest, I enjoy a daily cup of coffee as much as many people. I'm not a purist and I haven't sworn off caffeine or drinks that contain it. But the scary reality is also that products like potato chips, breath mints and some energy drinks contain as much caffeine as 2 cups of coffee! Potato chips?! Yes, you read that right.

Now imagine this: an unwitting teen or child or even a toddler chugs an energy drink or swallows some breath mints, following that with those high energy potato chips. Without eating or drinking another thing, that person could have high levels of caffeine in his system. With recent reports linking caffeine to higher rates of miscarriage, perhaps it is time to think about what caffeine can do to developing teens and children.

There is no regulation of these products. This book can tell you a bit more about the dangers of caffeine and how and why people might want to think about which foods and drinks and candies contain caffeine.

Again, I'm no purist. But the facts about poison control centers and increased caffeine poisonings are real. People are reacting to caffeine more often. I don't know if they are INTENTIONALLY taking in large amounts of caffeine or simply don't realize that some over the counter meds, breath mints, jelly beans, energy drinks and..yes. even potato chips can contain caffeine. But I tend to think that increased awareness is a good thing. Now you know.

This book will reveal what you can do about the amount of caffeine you injest, how to go through caffeine withdrawal or cut back (if you want)...and more.

this book has been very handy and useful to use on the first place program, it easily fits in your pocket or purse and comes in handy at the grocery store.

Handy little book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a very handy book to tuck in your purse or keep in your pocket as you follow the First Place Live-It plan. Lists not only foods you prepare but also exchanges from some of the most popular chain restaurants.

Handy, but limited 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This handy pocket guide is a helpful resource for anyone following an exchange-based dietary plan (First Place members, Weight Watchers, and diabetics, among others). Because of its small size, it is limited. Not all foods are listed. But if you want to be able to double check portion sizes for common foods, this little book will help.

Very informative and easy to use 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This handy little book fits easily in a pocket or purse. It works nicely with the rest of the First Place program to help you know what exchanges you are about to eat or have eaten! While this book is not as comprehensive as other calorie counting books, it is the perfect size to take with you.
