Removes all the guess working out of eating out 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I consider this book to be a completely indespensible resource for a diabetic. I've found this book to be useful in two different ways: #1 for just browsing through some of the restaurants and menu items to give you an idea about nutritional information in general. For example, you can peruse through a listing like "Starbucks" and learn how many carbs are in their various beverages, and then common things like bagels. Maybe you don't even like going to Starbucks, but such information is essential to know wherever you do go.

The second way this book is useful is to just pop in your suitcase or in your car when you travel. That way it just takes all the guesswork or awkwardness out of situations where you need to eat out, perhaps at restaurants you are not so familiar with. Just a quick glance at this book will tell you what will work for you and what won't.

Editorial Review:

If you have diabetes, here is the information you need to make healthy food choices when you go out to eat. Now you can dine at fast food chains and stay on your meal plan. Inside this handy guide is complete, at-a-glance nutrition information for more than 55 fast food chains, including Burger King, Wendy's, McDonald's, Baskin Robbins, TCBY, and other favorites.

Need to improve your eating habits? This is the book for you! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is divided into three distinct sections. The first provides a basic introduction to nutrition and healthy eating, with lots of practical tips and advice. The second describes some of the most commonly available "superfoods"--foods that have exceptional health value and are easy to incorporate into your diet. Fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, and fats are all represented, and there is a particular emphasis on foods that regular blood sugar (so it is especially helpful for those wanting to lose weight and/or treat or prevent diabetes). The third section offers easy recipes that feature these foods as starring ingredients, as well as some meal plan ideas to get you started.

PROS:
--The book is written and designed primarily for people who are "beginners" at healthy eating, so it is easy to read and practical.
--Many of the recipes are "remakes" of standard American fare, so this is a great book for you if you want to eat more healthily while still eating familiar, comfortable food.
-- With many vivid photographs and a colorful, dynamic layout, this book has immediate eye-appeal and is fun to flip through.
--The book is appropriate for everyone, but if you're trying to lose weight and/or control diabetes, it will be especially useful.

CAVEATS:
--If you already know a lot about nutrition, you may find the book a bit too simplistic. (Consider George Mateljan's "The World's Healthiest Foods" instead.)
--If you are interested in the recipes only, and not the nutritional info, then this book may not be worth the money. The recipes are good, but similar recipes can be found in most standard "healthy" cookbooks.

OVERALL: A well-designed and useful book, especially for those making a real lifestyle change to healthy eating for the first time. Fun to browse.

Caught in the middle of a product war 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Like most health-conscious people i stopped drinking milk years ago due to the amount of steroids and antibiotics that milk cows are injected with and get passed on to milk. Milk is not inherently bad for you, but unless i know exactly where the milk is coming from, i won't drink it. I doubt drinking milk from cows pumped with things such as Bovine Growth Hormone can be good for anyone.

So i started researching the alternatives, and soy milk came up.
Then after doing some research online, i was shocked by the amount of negative press and "reviews" soy products have been getting; so i decided to do my own research and purchased a large amount of soy beans to make soymilk at home.
This little experiment showed me (as this book points out) why soybeans are not a staple in any diet in any part of the world, like other beans are: they are pretty much indigestible, regardless of how much you soak them overnight, and cook them..
You can even blend a bunch of cooked soy beans with water to make a shake, but that will leave you with severe indigestion and nausea.
I know because i tried it.
I have even drank bottles of fermented Soy "Chicha" made by the locals in the Pacific Colombian coast.. it was delicious, but i had problems digesting it.
So, yes, most of the things that are said about unfermented soy products are probably true. Unfermented soy products contains a lot of chemicals that cause adverse reaction in humans and probably animals.
Just because soy beans are a naturally occuring vegetable doesn't mean we should be eating them.. after all one of the most potent poisons known to man, Ricin, comes from Castor beans.

The thing that disturbs me, is that as another reviewer pointed out, the research for this book was probably financed by the "Weston A. Price Foundation" which is basically a front that the milk industry uses to smear soy products.
Don't believe me? Richard James, an American lawyer living in New Zealand is the owner of the principal website against soy products.
Do a internet search for "richard james" new+zealand+milk and on the third link down you will find a link to westonprice's website containing a picture of Mr. James in the Weston A. Price "Australia-New Zealand 2003 tour."
Do you think the fact that such soyproduct bashing website is based in New Zealand, the biggest exporter of dairy products in the world, is accidental???
I corresponded directly with Mr. James about the picture in question and his connection with the milk industry and he denied he is getting any funding, he even questioned the fact that New Zealand is the biggest exporter of dairy products in the world, until i showed him the links confirming this; then he proceeded to insult me when i questioned his motivation to create the website... his explanation was that one of his "kids" was affected by soy milk, which contradicts the story given on the website about him starting the website because his "birds" got sick because of soy feed.
This lack of truthfulness makes me doubt the sincerity of Mr. James.. after all he was a lawyer!

Soy products have cost the dairy industry billions of dollars in lost revenue.. do you expect the dairy industry to stand by with their arms crossed and not do anything about it???

Folks, it is time we stop being so gullible.. we are caught between a multi-billion dollar war between the milk and the soy lobbies.
None of these people writing books on behalf of either industry are interested in your health!, they are interested in making money..

Don't believe anything you read.
This book was written by Kaayla Daniel who magically happens to be a board member of the Weston A Price Foundation!!

Any Phd will jump at the chance to do "research" on behalf of any industry for the right amount of money.

Read a rebuttal of this book here www.eatkind.net/wholesoystory.htm

Do your own research.
Stop consuming any non-organic, mass-produced dairy products, stop consuming any non-fermented soy products and as a wise reviewer said.. Moderation is the key!

Editorial Review:

A groundbreaking expose that tells the truth about soy that scientists know but that the soy industry has tried to suppress. Soy is not a health food, does not prevent disease and has not even been proven safe.ÊÊEpidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive problems, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, even heart disease and cancer. The Diabetes, Calorie, Carb, Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Fiber, Protein, Serving/Exchange Bible! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is endorsed by The American Diabetes Assn. & The American Dietetic Assn. It should also be endorsed by The American Heart Assn. Not only does it help give the reader information needed for a diabetic, it also gives information needed for a person with heart disease.
My husband has diabetes, high cholesterol, quadruple bypass, heart disease, stroke, 100% occluded carotid artery on one side and 60-70% occluded on the other side, just to mention a FEW of his problems.
This Guide not only addresses the diabetes & carbohydrate issue, but also addresses the cholesterol issue. I use it in conjunction with several Diabetes/Cholesterol Cookbooks. For every item, 11 columns of information as follows are listed: Serving Size, Calories, grams of Carbs, grams of Fat, % Calories of Fat, grams of Saturated Fat, mg. of Cholesterol, mg. of Sodium, grams of fiber, grams of Protein, and # of Servings/Exchanges.
The foods are grouped according to category. There are 28 categories. The categories are presented in a logical, systematic way, making this book an easy reference guide for a clueless novice like me.
I highly recommend this book not only for diabetics but for people with heart disease, for people on Weight Watchers diet and especially for the rest of us making up the majority of America who are overweight.
According to John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Human Nutrition, by the year 2015 ---- that's only 7 YEARS FROM NOW ---- 75% of American adults will be overweight, 41% will be obese and nearly 24% of U.S. children or adolescents will be overweight or obese.
In 2004, 32% of Americans were obese. Forty years ago, in 1964, only 13% of Americans were obese.
At risk are women ages 20 - 34 years old, regardless of race or ethnicity; 80% of black women age 40 and above are overweight while 50% are obese.
Wake up, America and do it now, not 7 years from now. The Diabetes Carbohydrate & Fat Gram Guide, 3rd Edition, used as a starting point gives you basic information needed BEFORE you go to the grocery store. Buy a few good cookbooks in addition to this book you're good to go.
This book gives you 4 meal-planning approaches: carb counting, fat gram counting, food exchange system and calorie counting. So if one approach confuses you, you have other options. What a deal!
Buy the book. Use it. Don't end up like my husband.

EXCELLENT....I feel so much better! 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I cannot believe what a difference this book has made in my life. I did not realize how tired I was until I began following the guidance of this book in avoiding certain foods and including others in my diet. Within a week I was feeling better. I had no idea how tired and sluggish I had been--I have so much more energy now, particularly in the evenings when I was usually tired after coming home from work. I highly recommend that you try this book. It's easy to read and well worth the time and money.

Allergies - very helpful input! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

While a lot of the material in this book is necessarily duplicated from other books published by D'Adamo in case the reader starts with this book, the real medical assistance offered has been very helpful to me - teaching me to manage my allergies proactively!

The essential guide for making sure your food is safe

A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives is back again, in an updated sixth edition. This valuable reference gives you all the facts about the relative safety and side effects of more than 12,000 ingredients that end up in your food as a result of processing and curing, such as preservatives, food-tainting pesticides, and animal drugs. For example, drugs used to tranquilize pigs may sedate diners!

There are hundreds of new entries to this edition, and topics covered include information about recently discovered resistant strains of bacteria credited to the antibiotics added to animal feed, as well as startling statistics on the amount of money spent on certain additives each year—$1.4 billion—on just flavorings and flavor enhancers.

A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives is a precise tool that will tell you exactly what to leave on supermarket shelves as a reminder to manufacturers that you know what the labels mean and which products are safe to bring home to your family.

Handy Travel Size Glycemic Load Pocket Guide! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Excellent small reference book that is purse size and easy to carry everyday to be used as a glycemic load eating guide when out and about!

Leaves much to be desired 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I recently received this book. I am NOT impressed. It is small enough to carry along with you everywhere. However, even though the back says it "no more math - each food's serving size is already computed into the GL score" it offers no serving sizes at all. For example, it lists "stuffing" at GL-14, GI-76 but offers no further info. How much? What kind of stuffing? Or, meat-filled ravioli GL-3, GI-39. How much? Homemade or store-bought? It goes on like that. There are also not enough listings. This handbook leaves much to be desired.

I also received "The New Glucose Revolution Shopper's Guide to GI Values 2008" (by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller and Kaye Foster-Powell) at the same time. This book is WELL worth the investment. There are over 1,000 foods listed, including name brand products. If you are looking for a handy guide to take along with you... definitely toss this one and buy the 2008 Shopper's Guide. You will get a much bigger bang for the buck with that book.

That book is MUCH better!

Good luck with the diet. So far, I am excited about it.

Editorial Review:

The glycemic index has proven itself to be a powerful tool for people trying to lose weight, control their diabetes, or simply follow a day-to-day diet that is both healthy and easy to maintain long-term. Designed especially for people following a low glycemic diet, this book provides all the vital numbers in a convenient, quick-reference format. It is also the only counter guide to focus on GL values, which are the most useful numbers for real-world dieting since they are based on actual portion size.
