Discovering Your Allergies or Trying New Foods 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 15 people found this review helpful.

"Quite often when you feel stressed, you should think about your diet rather than look for the things in your life that cause you stress." ~ pg. 12

You may already have a pretty good idea of what you are allergic to and this book will help to pinpoint additional allergies if you are still having specific symptoms. By eliminating most palm oils, peanuts and nuts from your diet, you may solve many problems. Soy butter and soy nuts are just as delicious.

The list of symptoms that indicate a food intolerance is a long one and you are sure to find a symptom here that could include frequent headaches, fatigue or insomnia. A short discussion about environmental causes for allergies is discussed - chemicals used in household cleaning can be significant in skin allergies. Switching to some of the Seventh Generation products can help or try Mrs. Meyers cleaning products.

Helpful suggestions include:

Soaking rice in mineral water to enliven the grains
Spouting your own beans, grains and seeds for salads
Purchasing oil in glass bottles
Using kelp as a substitute for salt

The authors introduce foods like umeboshi plums, kamut, quinoa and tamari. You may recognize many of the healthy foods presented and then enjoy using them in the recipes.

Amaranth and Apple Pancakes - uses sheep's milk and amaranth flour
Miso Soup - seaweed and miso soy bean paste
Roast Chicken with Plum Stuffing
Seafood Paella
Aduki bean burgers
Millet Croquettes
Redcurrant Sauce
Barley Scone Bread
Date and Coconut Muesli Bars
Cherry and Coconut Slices
Chocolate Hazelnut Biscuits
Fig and Lime Sorbet
Lemon and Elderberry Cordial
Mushroom and Tahini Spread

From my perspective, the recipes in this book would add to my diet and help me include more foods than eliminate foods. So, this book can be seen from two different perspectives. I don't see any deprivation in sight...this looks like a celebration of new foods and eclectic recipes to try as soon as you can make a trip to the health food section of your local store.

"The majority of people with allergies or food intolerances react to less than five items, of which the most common are tap water, dairy products, wheat, and other cereals that contain substances similar to gluten..." ~pg. 34

Not enough information listed - saturated, trans fats and sugars not in here 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

While this book has most of the ingredients we're supposed watching, it's a far cry from being "The Book that counts it all" as it touts on the front cover - it doesn't even have sugar content and the fat content doesn't even tell you how much of it is saturated (or trans). How can you leave those things out and call it complete???? Very disappointing. Did ANYBODY write a real guide that breaks down calories, fats (saturated, etc) cholesterol, carbs, sodium, protein, and fiber??? This is the 4th book I've gotten and NONE are complete. I'm wasting money trying to find just one that REALLY is complete and will be useful.

Encyclopedia of Food Values Review 3 out of 5 stars.

Book seems to have everything listed but is larger than I thought. It is at least 2 inches thick. It is setup in four sections. So if you want to know everything about a certain food, you have to look at all four sections.

Love the diet plan! Fast and easy calorie counter! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Fast and easy calorie counter. Extensive database on the internet for those of us watching carbohydrates, (carbs), protien, fat, and fiber. I love the diet, exercise, fitness plan. It is so easy, I am sure I attain my perfect weight using this plan with very little effort, and I am well on my way! It is also not an expensive diet plan with lot's of prepackaged food at outrageous prices. You can eat the foods you love, and make a few minor modifications. Buy this book if you want to get slim forever!

Waste of money 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The other reviews were misleading. They were the reason that I purchased this book (which seems to have been printed and bound at the author's home instead of a publishing company.) Despite the reviewers saying that this book is a good resource for those counting calories, fat grams and carbs all you get is calories. No fat grams or carbs are included. Very misleading! No sense in knowing how many calories in a food item if you don't know what percentage of that is fat. I could have compiled a more complete, useful and effective list myself and saved some money, too.

Editorial Review:

Novice or pro at counting calories, this is a fast, and easy to use, alphabetical calorie counter. Also contains a diet and exercise plan that is simple, safe, and heathy for all ages. Facts, tips, and secrets to control your weight and become slim forever. Gives access to internet site with complete nutritional counts for foods, with carbohydrates, fats, sodium, cholesterol, and much more. This may be the only calorie counter and diet/exercise guide you will ever need.

Great help for healing! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book gives wonderful simple cures for many health problems. They are especially good because they may be purchased inexpensively, mostly from the grocery store, not the costly drugs. They are natural cures, with no side effects as the drugs have. I will use it often for reference, and will give many books for gifts.

Mostly garlic 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book had some interesting information in it, but I also thought it lacked some authority on the subject of healing foods. I happen to like garlic, so I have no problem incorporating it into my diet but I highly doubt it has all the medicinal purposes the author presents in his book. I found some value in the book though, if you can glean the valuable information from it. Garlic isn't the only healing food in the book but it permeates the pages pretty well.

MIRACULE MEDICINE FOODS- by Rex Adams 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Everything you thought you knew about nutrition … but didn't! Politically Incorrect Nutrition debunks many of the widely held beliefs of consumers as well as health care practitioners concerning our life-sustaining food supply.

Using the most recent and objective scientific and clinical research data, this book reveals that much current nutritional dogma is based on outdated information or has been fabricated to satisfy vested corporatefinancial interests rather than to promote human health. Learn about these issues and more:

*How non-caloric artificial sweeteners can actually make you fat -- if not kill you.
*How overconsumption of certain soy products can upset your hormonal balance and lead to hypothyroidism.
*Why cholesterol does not cause heart disease and how eggs and red meat may actually help prevent it.
*The harmful effects of irradiation, microwaving, plastic leaching and overprocessing on food.
*Why the government is poisoning our water supply with fluoride, a toxin also found in green tea.
*The need for saturated -- but not synthetic -- fats in a healthy diet.
*The limitations of calcium and vitamin C supplementation.
*A dozen ways a vegetarian diet can actually harm your health.
*Facts and fallacies about the "Ideal" diet.

A must have for every new diabetic 5 out of 5 stars.
50 of 51 people found this review helpful.

When I was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and had to lose weight, I was at a loss to know where to start. This book has been a life saver. It has the calorie, carbohydrate and fat count of more foods than you can imagine. The first part of the book deals with the reasons for managing your diet and how diet affects diabetes. This book has become my constant companion in the kitchen. It helps me use my favorite receipes while controlling calories and carbohydrates.

Missing Fiber information 2 out of 5 stars.
22 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This would be a great book with a large number of food items analyzed, but it doesn't include the fiber information, something that can be very important to a diabetic since fiber can have a positive effect on blood sugar and cholesterol. I was going to return it, but it isn't worth it, so I just ordered The Complete Book of Food Counts by Corinne T. Netzer which has all the information needed.

Editorial Review:

This book was required for a nutrition class at a local community college. I was really pleased to find it for sale online so much cheaper than my college bookstore, and delivery was in the perfect timing for the start of classes.

Excellet Carb Counter 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best carb counters on the market. It is so easy to use, and lists every single food I have ever eaten, even the most popular restaurant foods. It is very well organized, making finding foods very quick. I just love the alphabetical listings instead of all those categories. I also found the foods to be listed in the serving size most commonly consumed. Plus there are additional serving size listings for items like flour and sugar that you would use in cooking/baking. I disagree with the bad reviews. For instance "potato" is right there, easy to find, in baked, boiled, etc. It lists the size of the potato in inches instead of saying 3 oz. Well how many of you have a scale with you to weigh your potato when you eat out? I would rather see the size, like 3 inch long by 2 inch round. Awesome book!
