This book is my juicing bible. It contains an easy reference for which fruits and vegetables are helpful for various nutritional needs as well as a "conditions" section with recommendations for using various juice combinations to assist the body to work most efficiently. Also includes a nice selection of recipes.

Good juicing book. 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is not too bad figure in it came out in 1989 and much of the info is still up to date. In this book though it gives you the problem and then which vegetables are good for this problem for example:Blood pressure: beet, beet green, cabbage sprout, cucumber, spinach, wheatgrass. Get the picture. It also has a section on fasting, designing a juice program and buying a juicer. It also got some recipes it does not tell you what there for. Like Juiceman Jay's book will tell you if your fatigued try such and such a juice. In this book you got to figure it out yourself. But like I said for coming out in 1989 its gotta a lot of info.

Editorial Review:

Complete guide to using juices to maximize health and vitality. Offers up-to-date information on the value of juices in relation to the body's needs. Included are comprehensive charts, delicious recipes and instructions on using various juicing equipment. 40,000 sold.

Great book for both patient and caregiver 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I received this book as a gift a number of years ago when my husband was fighting cancer. Like all cancer patients he had little appetite and lots of side effects from his chemo. The recipes are great to help with the various problems encountered by cancer patients at any time during the treatment. I also found the section for caregivers to be really helpful for myself. Not only is nutrition important for the patient but the caregiver also and this book provided great food and good tips also. Now, I give this book as a gift to those I know how are dealing with cancer themselves or a loved ont.

Great food ideas 4 out of 5 stars.

I oftentimes recommend this book to my patients that are at a loss for what they need/should be eating during treatment. It takes a lot of the guess work out of what to cook. A great gift for friends and family members who don't know what else to do when a loved one is diagnosed, buy this book and prepare a healthy meal.

Extensive cancer treatments can be devastating to the entire system, so eating healthy foods can help to combat even the worst of chemical side effects.

Well-written, easy to read, and chock full of info.

Editorial Review:

Designed for cancer patients and their family, these easy-to-follow recipes focus on foods best tolerated and those to ease the symptoms during treatment. With an oncologist's chapter introduction, doctor's notes, menu planning, tips, nutritional analysis, diabetic exchanges, the book serves as a guide for nutrition before, during, and after cancer treatment.

Feast Without Yeast 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was so happy to find yummy salad dressings in here that will work for me. I have to cut down on fruit and eat more veggies, but I couldn't have vinegar or dairy. This pretty much eliminates all the store bought dressings. I like the garlic tomatoe dressing. It was really easy and very good. There are a lot of great receipes if you suffer from systemic yeast, although those who are very severe need to stay away from the receipes with clover honey in them.

Editorial Review:

This new, original cookbook is completely free of yeast and fermented foods, and mostly free of milk, wheat, eggs and other common food allergens such as corn, soy, rye, nuts and peanuts. All of the recipes are kosher; all are sugar free, and most are cholesterol free and vegetarian. There are more than 225 original recipes, as well as a complete, simple, 4 stage program for changing to a healthier diet. The authors have included a chapter helping parents change their childrens' diets, including lists of kid-tested recipes and pointers for picky eaters.

Contradictory, but some good info 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book starts off in a no-nonsense manner, with some good nutritional info, and the author really emphasizes the importance of exercise. Some very good recipes, too. But then:

After telling you caffeine interferes with calcium absorption, allows you to have coffee or tea with breakfast (which includes calcium) instead of telling you to drink it some other time, or go for decaf, or not drink it at all, which would be much better.

Lists the USDA and Institute of Medicine guidelines for sodium (2300 and 1500 mg per day, respectively), and then includes a recipe for miso soup that PER SERVING contains 1166 mg of sodium. What!

Pushes calcium supplements, when, just by drinking nonfat milk (or adding nonfat dry milk to some recipes), and eating more calcium-rich vegetables you could easily make your daily requirement, perhaps taking a multi-vitamin to cover all the bases.

The Jump-Start diet, while thankfully not one of the many juice fasts, is odd in that it has the majority of the calories eaten at dinner. However, it does consist of real food.

The author's recipes have you adding salt to the cooking water for beans. Not only does this extend the cooking time, but you are adding salt without tasting them first. Doesn't make sense.

Has few options for those who are vegan wishing to follow this diet. Mentions flaxseed only in connection with Omega-3 rich eggs (as it being in the feed). What about grinding it up and adding it to your diet? Yes, fiber interferes with calcium absorption too, but it's a lot better for you than caffeine.

Tells you to substitute mineral water (especially fizzy) for alcohol or sodas. Try plain water. Any dentist will tell you that carbonated water, over time, can damage your teeth. If you're so insecure that you worry about what the people around you will think of what you're drinking, you have other issues.

Promotes using Splenda in recipes (which just promotes the sugar-taste connection), instead of just using less (or no) sugar and/or substituting small amounts of reconstituted dried fruits, which while having some calories, also provide other nutrients.

Bottom line: this is a decent book, but you do have to resolve the contradictions and tweak the diet to match your budget.

Much of the useful information is buried in paragraphs when it should be separately highlighted. The constant references to NYC are annoying (the "Park Avenue Mindset" could have just been referred to as "Type A" personality, for one thing), and for the most part are useless to those who live elsewhere and/or don't have the money to pay for the Fage brand yogurt, and other expensive products she recommends. All in all, about a third of the book is NYC-centric, with its references to restaurants, stores/delis, and where to walk in Central Park (useful if you're visiting, though).

Buy used.

Just What The Doctor Ordered!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I'm not much of a cook. Routinely, I'd just grab and go in order to keep up with my fast paced lifestyle. But since the doctor diagnosed me with Type 2, I realized that I had to make some changes. Part of my new lease on life included eating healthier. Reversing Diabetes Cookbook: More Than 200 Delicious, Healthy Recipes is heaven sent. The recipes are easy to follow and the meals I've made so far are OUTSTANDING. In fact, what prompted me to write this review is the grilled terriyaki salmon I just prepared. Magnificent. I just had to share my findings with others.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to transition to a healthier way of life. Consequently, I've lost 15lbs.

Best cookbook I have! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm a vegetarian and my boyfriend is a meat eater with high cholesterol and we both love this cookbook. Our favorites are the mac n' cheese, pesto, and the chicken casserole with cornbread stuffing. (The worst thing we tried was something that was even bad -- just boring.) We haven't tried the desserts yet, but I bet they'll be yummy too!
The recipes we've tried are all pretty easy (I'm no chef!) and the ingredients are normal stuff you can buy at a regular grocery store. Everything we've tried tastes good in its own right -- not like, this is good for being lowfat. It's actually good.
Most important, it's great that we can literally trying anything in this cookbook and know that it's heart healthy and might even help us lose weight.

the Enchanted Broccoli Forest is well worth exploring :) 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I found the original version of this book in a used bookstore and bought it for the whimsical title and the illustrations on bread baking. I didn't try it out immediately because several recipes do have ingredients that I don't typically have on-hand (although I haven't had any trouble finding them when I've looked). My boyfriend and I have recently gone through several of the recipes, though, and they've all come out beautifully, with no tinkering necessary :) We're both scientists, so we tend to experiment when we cook, and conclude "this was a good recipe after we substituted this, and reduced that, and added this", but all of the recipes we've tried so far have been delicious as-is. The flavors have been subtle and well-balanced, so you can find something interesting to taste in every bite. That said, tastes vary, and we'd actually thought before that many people might think the flavors in the dishes aren't strong enough (hence "not tasty"). In addition, I agree that "vegetarian" does not necessarily mean "healthy" anymore than "fat-free" means "calorie-free"--there is a lot of cheese, cream, and butter in many of the dishes, so if you want something low-cholesterol, try out your favorite substitutions and see if they'll work. Many of the recipes also do involve a little advance planning and work--making sure you have all of the ingredients, peeling and cutting up vegetables, etc., but if you enjoy cooking, that should be part of the fun :) They also make for good team-cooking--there's usually enough for two people to do so that you can enjoy making something together.
