Editorial Review:

"Diet food can be better, richer, and more sumptuous than most everyday foods," says Dr. Robert Atkins, author of the massive bestseller, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Carbohydrates, in his opinion, are the root of metabolic evil and the source of hyperinsulinemia, a condition that makes it next to impossible to lose weight. Billed as a companion to his Diet Revolution book, this collection of recipes focuses on ultralow-carbohydrate dishes. His anticarb stance leads to some unconventional dietary advice: "Remember that, as a rule, the lower the fat content of a milk product, the higher its carbohydrate grams. Use cream, not skim milk; use sour cream, not yogurt."

While these recipes are certainly quick and easy to prepare and feature easy-to-find ingredients, some are very high in fat (Zabaglione, Crab and Avocado Salad, Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, Baked Eggs in Bacon Rings). While it may be true that fat is flavor and is necessary to some extent to keeping blood sugar on an even keel, these recipes won't be helpful for those who are watching their cholesterol or are on similarly restricted diets.

Editorial Review:

Diabetes has hit epidemic levels, affecting up to 17 million Americans. Even children and adolescents are developing type 2 diabetes, once considered an illness that occurred in adults. Despite these statistics, people with diabetes can control their illness, thanks to innovations in insulins, insulin pens and pumps, and nutrition. Better Homes and Gardens Carb Counter’s Diabetic Cookbook can be a key tool in managing diabetes and improving quality of life. The book features the most current meal-planning strategy recognized by the American Diabetes Association: counting carbohydrates. Simply put, carbohydrate is the nutrient that has the greatest effect on blood glucose levels, and eating about the same amount of carbohydrate at the same times each day keeps these levels in range. More than 220 mouthwatering healthful recipes, a week's sample menus, and portion control tips make carb counting easy and enjoyable. Complete nutrition information accompanies each recipe. This cookbook also contains information about prediabetes risk factors, ways to prevent the illness, plus a wealth of resources.

bodybuilders stay away 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I'm surprised that there are no reviews. I'm into weight training and I'm old. I've got Dr. D's video on the anabolic diet, I have both the digital first anabolic diet followed by the anabolic diet for bodybuilders and now this book. Yes I spend money. Did it help me? Yes and no. It gave me an introduction to cycling diets, it has diet plans, and charts for fat, protein and carb ratios in food. And I got some success with the plan but I couldn't take it. Going from near ketogenic (or ketogenic) to carbing up is awful. When you carb up, its like being in a haze, really nasty at times. I'd rather stay in ketosis then be bouncing back and forth. He writes well but most of the time I felt like he talks down to the reader. I had no idea that the human body thinks or realizes instead of reacting, when writers give sentience to body functions I get the feeling that I am being talked down to, but then again, he is after all, a doctor. Did I mention that he talks down to the reader. Finally, on the negative side, he's flogging his own brand of supplements, it was to be expected since he did it in his digital anabolic bodybuilder's diet. That's nice Dr D, just leave the website address, I'll drop by if I win the lottery. I would have saved myself alot of time and nausea if I'd just bought Dan Duchaine's Body Opus and Lyle Macdonald's Ultimate diet 2, which I finally did (here at amazon.....am I flogging!). Yes Dan's body opus diet is ketogenic, but he explains alot, he talks about the supplements you need minus the commericals. Lyle's book shifts things around a little and takes you out of the need for ketosis if you are trying to cut down, and both of them spend alot on glycogen supercompensation which believe it or not made alot of sense to me, which Dr. D didn't focus on at all. Considering that Dan's book must have been pivotal when it came out, a sort of tell all for those that aren't in the incrowd of the muscle dysmorphia gang, you wouldn't even know he ever existed from Dr. D. Perhaps its Dan's stance on roids. In fact when he reviews the various diets out there he doesn't even mention Macdonald either. Perhaps its the fact that they didn't jump hoops at University and get the awe inspiring credentials. So if you're a bodybuilder stay away, but if you're fat with a capital F then this might be for you.

Book Description Both Overeaters Anonymous, Inc. and Greysheeters Anonymous Inc. are 12 Step Recovery groups, patterned after Alcoholics Anonymous, to help members deal with addiction, food issues, compulsive overeating, and eating disorders. This book provides a new Forward explaining the history of the "Greysheet" and it's relationship to Overeaters Anonymous Inc. Overeaters Anonymous has suggested using a variety of food plans over the years, including "the original Greysheet" very low carbohydrate food plan, copyrighted by OA in 1972, Rev. 1974. The "Greysheet" was printed on grey paper - hence the name "Greysheet.". While Overeaters Anonymous Inc. now publishes "The Dignity of Choice Sample Plans of Eating," as official literature, including a Very Low Carbohydrate Food Plan, and no longer publishes or offers the "Greysheet" as official OA literature, the interest in the "Greysheet" remains. Readers will find complete information about the 12-Step Recovery Group, Greysheeters Anonymous, based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous Inc., and the "Greysheet" Food Plan and Method, a very low carb, high protein food plan, no breads, flour products, only products that list sugar at least fifth on the label, and quantities suggested in weighed and measured amounts. The Greysheet Recipes included in this edition are contributed by members of greysheetrecipes@yahoogroups.com , an online forum, and conform to "the original Greysheet" very low carb food plan, copyrighted by OA 1972, Rev. 1974. The discussion group is for members to post and discuss recipes that meet the requirements of the food on the Greysheet Food Plan. While this edition does not contain a copy of "the original Greysheet" Food Plan, you can obtain a copy of the Greysheet by contacting a member of one of the Greysheet support groups through one of the links offered in the book. The recipes are published with the advisory that members of OA and Greysheeters Anonymous consult their Sponsors about what is abstinent. You can find links to both OA and Greysheeters Anonymous resources in this edition, and more about some of the specialty foods like soynut butter, soy products, digital scales for weighing and measuring food amounts, and literature on recovery from compulsive overeating. "For The Original Overeaters Anonymous Very Low Carbohydrate Food Plan: Greysheet Recipes," is neither endorsed nor sponsored by Overeaters Anonymous or Greysheeters Anonymous.

Editorial Review:

From the top-selling author of The Good Carb Cookbook comes a comprehensive and motivating guide to the good-carb lifestyle.

Lately, low-carb diets have been all the rage, but until recently little scientific research has been available regarding their effectiveness and potential health consequences. Now, studies are proving that low-carb diets do work and, contrary to popular belief, they don't pose health risks-if they are done right. But with so many diets to choose from, it is hard for many people to find a program that is realistic for their lifestyle and to which they can adhere.

Nationally recognized nutritionist Sandra Woodruff demystifies the process and explains how anyone can tailor a low-carb plan to their individual needs to achieve long-term weight loss. She provides hundreds of delicious recipes, innovative menu plans, instructive cooking tips, and helpful advice for eating out. The healthy eating plan in Secrets of Good-Carb/Low-Carb Living includes lean proteins, healthy fats, and good carbs to not only lose weight but also to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels and help correct metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Now anyone can get better results from their low-carb diet or formulate a new eating plan specifically for their needs. With Sandra Woodruff, low-carb living never tasted so good!

Editorial Review:

"Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" is the inspiring weight loss success story of Jimmy Moore who made it his New Year's resolution on January 1, 2004 to lose weight once and for all. While others quit after only a few days or weeks, Jimmy pressed on until the next New Year's Day when he had shed 180 pounds from his 6'3" frame.

This book is not just another diet book trying to tell you the "hidden secrets to weight loss success" nor is it the latest media-hyped fad diet that will do nothing to help you lose weight if you are overweight or obese.

Instead, it is the real-life success story of how one man who was morbidly obese and on the verge of declining health and quite possibly an early grave was able to pull himself up out of the inevitable consequences that come with extreme obesity.

"Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" literally helped Jimmy overcome a lifetime of weight problems to become a physically fit and athletic person because of the healthy benefits he has enjoyed on the low-carb lifestyle.

This book contains the 10 life-changing characteristics that Jimmy implemented to transform his body from a 410-pound man into the healthy and vibrant individual he is today.

Each chapter pinpoints a specific aspect of Livin' La Vida Low-Carb that kept Jimmy losing fat even as others were quitting on their "diet." Topics include water, exercise, sugar, carbohydrates, vitamins, motivation, perseverance, support, and commitment.

Written in a no-nonsense, conversational style, "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" tells the truth about low-carb, offers advice about countering the constant negativity that this way of eating has received, provides instructional moments about how low-carb can work for you using examples from Jimmy's experience, challenges people to educate themselves more about low-carb living, and even throws in a few of Jimmy's favorite low-carb recipes.

Jimmy Moore has been radically changed for the better all because of the low-carb lifestyle. Let his personal testimony, in his own words, motivate and encourage you in your own weight loss journey.

"Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" includes a foreword by Ralph Bristol, a radio talk show host who conducted a weight loss contest that Jimmy won, as well as quotes from Jonny Bowden, author of Living the Low-Carb Life and Jacqueline A. Eberstein, R.N., co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution.

The Ketogenic Diet 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The best resource you can find for this type diet. Actually, I do not consider it a diet but a way of life now. It is not hard to follow. All my questions were answered in this book, and some I did't even know I had.

Editorial Review:

'The Ketogenic Diet' is a complete resource for anyone interested in low-carbohydrate diets (such as the Atkins Diet, Protein Power, Bodyopus or the Anabolic Diet). It looks objectively at the physiology behind such diets, including potential negative effects, and gives specific recommendations on how to optimize such a diet assuming an individual has chosen to do one. Two modified ketogenic diets (which involve the insertion of carbohydrates to sustain exercise performance) are also discussed in detail, along with specific guidelines. Exercise is discussed in great detail, including background physiology, the effects of exercise on fat loss, exercise guidelines and sample workouts. A great deal of basic physiology information, dealing with both nutrition and exercise topics, is included so that readers without a technical background will be able to understand the topics discussed.

The recipes are simple to make and truly delicious.

101 Low Carb Diet Tips showed me how to substitute low-carb items instead of high-fat content foods. This is a very nice book. One of the best books in the LifeTips Series!

101 Low Carb Diet Tips

Though it's only a tip book, it's absolutely practical: you get the basics and theories behind major low carb diets, footnoted critique -- but also 'cookable' recipes. I just bought the book and right away, tried one of the quick dessert recipes - very good indeed. As Dr Zilberter writes, "The bottom line is, low carb is good for you - if you know the ropes. This is what these tips are all about."

Better together - with Banta online 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this bood, then figured out that you can have a very interesting and (looks like) easy to follow real plan by the same author, it's mentioned in the book.

The site bantadiet.com however shows some signs of reconstructions, but you can have 7 dail plans for free, then you report you progress and they will send you a plan a day for one more week. I think the several hundreds members there are happy with the first 7 :) but it's a very new group with free membership:

http://groups.google.com/group/banta-daily-plans

So! '101 Tip' is a good thing but a good diet plan stays forever :)))
