Choose your weight. Choose ANY weight! 5 out of 5 stars.

This diet works. That is the first and the last word.

You can eat as much as you like (of the right foods). You will never feel hungry. You can snack as much as you can bear.

Want your svelte twenty year old body back? This diet will do it.

Tired of carrying an extra fifty pounds? This diet will eliminate it without any sacrifice.

Giving up refined flour products (toast) was vital for this satisfied customer; weight loss went from 0 lbs back to -9 lbs per month. Amazing.

Requirements? A little will power. "Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda.

"Oh no. I couldn't do that. I couldn't give up (meat, milk, cheese, oils)" is your inner dragon talking. Try these recipes. You should notice that you are eating better than ever before.

(Full disclosure. Someone here kept eating 3-4 fish portions / month; purely for the anti-stroke effect, no doubt. Honest. But only 3oz / meal; after two weeks without meat that is a real feast; a Pritiken-sized portion).

These rare feasts helped compliance otherwise enormously. Willpower and self denial alone don't work in the long term. So you CAN eat the wrong foods. Just not every day. Or week. Or month. It is NOT that you can never eat meat, cheese etc again. It IS that you can eat them once every second Thanksgiving (or calculate % non-compliance here) ); which is as often as McDougall says he eats turkey.

Sauces are far more vital than rare feasts. General Tsao, kung pao, thai chili, teriyaki, black bean and mexican hot sauces all make the food an endless everyday treat. Happily they all meet the diet's requirements for limited fat.

Can't do it? Willpower of a gnat? That's a real pity. You could start with partial adherence; get used to it; then gradually increase the compliance. % compliance is entirely up to you. Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all? Plus the secret is: following the diet becomes extremely easy as it becomes a daily habit. In about a year.

Now before we eat let us say grace. "Thank you Oh Lord for John and Mary McDougall's diet. Good food. Good drink. Good God. Let's eat."

Enjoy.

Editorial Review:

The authors of Protein Power are back to advocate the "protein-rich, moderate-fat, carbohydrate-restricted diet" that opposes the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet that every professional medical and dietetic organization (including those who have no diet books to sell) believes to be your best bet for avoiding heart disease, the number one killer. The authors insist, in the face of all this medical opposition, that "the whole idea that fat and cholesterol cause heart disease is just that: an idea." We're meant to be hunters, say the authors: bring on the meat. Let's go back to the Paleolithic diet (no mention of the brief life span of Paleolithic men and women).

The Protein Power Lifeplan is not easy reading--most of the book is made up of scientific explanations, research summaries and interpretations, and nutritional warnings--but no recipes. Besides recommending eating protein and fat, the authors recommend sunbathing without sunblock (but "never, never let your skin burn!") and exercises such as "bringing home the buffalo" and "defending the camp." The authors admit that if you're trying to lose weight, you have to limit calories, but if you're not, you can "munch on nuts, seeds, nut butters, cheeses, jerky, guacamole, and olives all day long." Carbohydrates, say the authors, "are totally nonessential to your health and well-being"--words to make dieticians and cardiologists shudder.

inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.

I've been trying to do low carb for years. Lost 75 pounds when I first tried Atkins. But surgery, a full time job, and someone else cooking for me have caused me to gain back 30 pounds. I am not following a low carb diet closely enough, sometimes not at all. But a recent diagnosis of diabetes has me trying again. Still have the full time job, and someone else still cooks for me. You'd think that would make it easier but she simply won't cook what I want and I have to be more determined in my efforts. This book really explained all the low carb chemistry, explained all the different way to do low carb by giving variations of the diet. I feel inspired to make my voice heard and eat the foods that are good for me.

Editorial Review:

How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! is a breezy, chatty, non-technical, fun-to-read explanation of low carbohydrate dieting -- why it works, the surprising health benefits, and most importantly, how to "do" the diet. Or, rather, diets, since the book details three very different main approaches to controlling carbohydrates (including the Basic Low Carb Diet, similar to Atkins or Protein Power, and the Mini-Binge Diet, popularized as The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet), plus several variations, finally summing up the basic principles which tie them all together. The point is to give the reader the tools necessary to construct a new way of eating that will fit his or her body, psyche, and lifestyle, thus allowing them to stay slim, energetic, and healthy for life.

Editorial Review:

Stepping around the low-fat versus low-carb debate, Jorge Cruise (Eight Minutes in the Morning) suggests that losing weight isn't in what you eat, but rather, when you eat it. The core idea behind The Three-Hour Diet is that by timing your meals and snacks every day, the pounds will come off. No restrictions, no exercise.

While reality is rarely that simple, the advice offered here is nutritionally sound, emphasizing plenty of fruits and vegetables, and filling in with lean proteins, healthy fats, and just enough carbs to keep meals interesting. Following Cruise’s guidelines for portion control, you’ll eat an average of 1,400 calories per day, filling half your plate with fruits or vegetables, and dividing the other half between the rest of the food groups. Healthy meals from fast-food joints and freezer cases are included, and a substantial recipe section offers everything from a bacon and cheese omelet to rosemary lamb chops. A month-long journal is also provided, giving you space to plan each meal in advance (a key part of the diet), along with daily motivational hints and visualization exercises. A few pages cover basic exercises--but the emphasis is definitely on the diet, which Cruise asserts will work, regardless of whether you choose to work out.

Cruise’s straightforward, no-excuses encouragement works well with the simple formula the plan is based upon, and the clever Three-Hour Plate™ makes it easy to keep portion sizes in check. Still, closely monitoring meal time might seem like a challenge to some of the "busy people" for whom the program claims to be specifically designed. If counting calories or net carbs sounds daunting—but keeping a close eye on the clock doesn’t—you might just find weight loss success in these pages. —Jill Lightner

Amazon.com exclusive content

Tired of fad diets and their lack of results? That's just how Jorge Cruise, author of The Three-Hour Diet, wants you to feel. Cruise's guidelines encourage sensible portion control and plenty of vegetables, but--perhaps more importantly--they encourage dieters to feel good about themselves by teaching self-acceptance and positive visualization. Stressing an easy-to-follow visual food plan that insists on incorporating snacks and treats into your day, he contends that carb-bashing is a highly ineffective means of maintaining a healthy weight. How can you sort out weight-loss fact from fiction? Amazon.com contributor Jill Lightner got some straight answers from Cruise.

Not very scientific 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be somewhat vague and non-scientific. It's all stuff I've read before. The 'quizzes' to determine how sensitive you are to wheat or grains are too broad. There is some good info on tests and glutens, but the part about 'exorphins' is just plain silliness. Save your time and money, here's a summary: (i) avoid grains, esp wheat (ii) go organic where possible (iii) it's hard and people might think you're weird but go for it.

Thought Provoking 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I came to this book as someone on a low starch diet to combat ankylosing spondylitis. I found the book concise and well argued and am now convinced that avoiding or at least reducing the intake of grain products is essential for those with grain sensitivities but also important for those otherwise well people seeking to avoid the modern maladies of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer etc. I highly recommend the book.

Editorial Review:

Diets high in grains can lead to a host of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, fatigue, and more. Going Against the Grain outlines the disadvantages and potential dangers of eating various types of grains and provides practical, realistic advice on implementing a plan to cut back or eliminate grains on a daily basis. This book also includes easy-to-follow grain-free recipes and helpful suggestions for dining out.
