In Bette Hagman's three earlier cookbooks, she worked with gluten-free flours that are safe for celiacs (those who are intolerant to gluten) and for those with wheat allergies to create recipes for great- tasting food. I had never heard of Celiac Disease until I got a call from my Dr saying I had tested positive. After five minutes on the Internet I began to cry!! What CAN I eat?? This is the first cook book I bought when at a nutritional store for the first time (Talk about overwhelmed!!). As I read through this book I received my first ray of hope that I CAN do this. I have tried some of the recipes all with good results. The bread I made is simply delicious. I actually can have sandwiches!!! I am going to give away all my other cookbooks ( I have quite a collection from the past forty years or so) and just keep Bette's. I will say that some of the ingredients are not the most healthy (Butter flavored Crisco), but let me be honest, I didn't always cook or eat totally healthy (croissants, pie, cake, cinnamon buns) before my diagnoses! It is a wonderful encouragement to me to know, that while I cannot make a steady diet of these treats, I can make them for myself fairly easily. I highly recommend this cookbook for those who are willing to put some initial time into advance preparation. Frankly, I am thrilled to know I can enjoy pumpkin pie and my family's traditional corn bread stuffing this Thanksgiving!

I was a little disappointed with this cookbook. I think most of the recipes are pretty generic as they call for all of the 'normal' ingredients of the recipes, but just add "gluten-free" to the title of the ingredient. It wouldn't take a genius to take already used recipes and convert them to GF just by substituting the ing. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but this wasn't it....

If you're looking for a be-all, end-all cookbook for celiac/wheat free cooking, keep looking. If, however, you are looking for a great starter cookbook that has a great number of quick easy recipes that taste good, then don't hesitate to buy this book. Everything is written for kids, so it's easy to follow and the recipes are super easy and quick. It covers everything from drinks, desserts, to all the staples like dinner, appetizers, and such.

After going gluten free a year ago, I thought I'd never bake anything good again. But this book and its predecessor, The Gluten-free Gourmet, changed my mind! Because I'm also sugar free, baking is an extra large challenge. But these recipes along with xylitol sweetener have gotten me back in business. What a great find! Thanks, Bette!

Thanks to Bette Hagman's clearly written, informative cookbooks, it is very easy to enjoy a gluten/wheat free lifestyle. This book is not only power packed with excellent recipes, but with tips on maintaining a gluten free lifestyle.

It makes me think of the spiritual, "Free At Last." A modified version for the Hagman books could be "Wheat free at last, wheat free at last..."

Since my gluten-free regimen began after diagnosis for "intolerance"; I've sought nutritional direction and assistance with finding a new path for cooking. However, baking has never been high on my list of favorites, mostly because my own consumption of wheat flour-based desserts was never enjoyable and their creation just as unsatisfying. In this book, the ingredients, steps, methods and results are all TOP NOTCH. Great attention and just-enough explanation has helped me create very delectable cakes and pies that I would have never bothered attempting before. As with most recipe books, the paperback version is void of helpful photos. However, it has given my family and friends another glance into the challenges of eating gluten-free; it's great for sharing recipes with those who'd cook for those with intolerances/allergies.
