If you are looking for an alternative to surgery. THIS is it. Pain Free
helped dad, husband, & myself. A guy at my husband's work, broke his back
parachuting and credits Pain Free for the fact that he's fine today. Any
time we have a friend or relative that is struggling with pain, we pass
on a copy to them. I have Pain Free for Women which is great too. Easy to
understand and practical exercises that start helping you immediately.
This book is the best gift you could give yourself or someone you care
about.

Pete Egoscue learned a lot about pain when, as a Marine officer, he was wounded in Vietnam. He segued from patient to physical therapist, and now runs a famous clinic in San Diego, where he claims he's helped 95 percent of his patients cure chronic pain--including Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley, whose athletic careers he helped prolong. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restore proper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising and counterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue has strong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducing the tasks we must perform and thus reducing the functional range of motion of our muscles and joints. Kisner has been a very useful resource for Physical Therapist. Rarely you can find a book this cheap yet outstanding. Package arrived earlier than expected.

I am quite athletic and injured some muscles/tendons. I was in physical therapy and wanted to know more about why specific exercises were helping more than I had expected. This is a perfect book for the aging athlete who will start getting more and more minor problems from wear and tear, that seem to take longer and longer to heal. This book describes quite clearly and completely activies that help both in prevention and recovery. The knowledge it contains will help anyone heal as quickly as possible and avoid reinjury.

Great book for anybody, but especially needed for beginers. For every asana there is at least one picture to illustrate the proper technique. Helps with breathing and flow, describing how your muscles are working and proper focus.

This book generally shows the progression of the poses from beginner to advanced. You will not be talked down to in this book. I like having more information then I need so that I can reference back and progress when I'm ready.

INTENSE WORKOUT THAT WORKS 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an intense workout and calorie-sparse diet program for those serious about having a fit body. The 30-day program is for people who want to lose weight and become stronger and more fit.

The exercise program requires some knowledge of weight training and involves a balance of cardio and strength training. You begin the exercise part of the program with an assessment of your current condition by doing a 3-minute step exercise and heart rate measurement, as well as testing how many sit-ups and push-ups you can do in a minute. The exercise includes the use of some gym equipment as well as free weights, body ball, and a step. The exercises also involve doing variations of squats, lunges, jumping rope, push-ups, and sit-ups. There are over a hundred different exercises, and they progress in difficulty over time, though even the early ones will make you sore. It is not just a strength training workout as there is a fair amount of cardio.

The author has a theory about how people "oxidize" food and provides a test to see whether you are a fast, slow, or balanced oxidizer. Her theory suggests that fast oxidizers need more protein and slow oxidizers need more carbohydrates. The book has three different menus with recipes (which make 10-12 servings) for each type of oxidizer. The three diets are calorie-controlled meal plans you must prepare at home and there is no fast food or junk food allowed. The food is designed for maximizing nutrition and minimizing calories. The book also provides grocery lists to make shopping easy. Note that the diets are not vegetarian.

The book emphasizes that there are no quick fixes to weight loss - just a lot of hard work involving calorie-restricted eating and effective exercise - but the payoff is the body you want. If you are ready for the time commitment of this strict, highly-scheduled 30-day diet and exercise program, it will deliver results. An additional approach, THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams. I recommend both books.

This is a solid book for teaching you the basics of leading a healthy life. For people not well educated on basic wellness ideas, this can be a godsend: it will guide you through many topics that are considered common knowledge but, unfortunately, probably aren't as well-known and properly understood as they should be.

Topics covered here include:
- basic methods to studying and eliminating unhealthy habits
- stress sources and management
- strength exercises, including photos and descriptions of many common ones: good for an exercise novice who'd like to avoid the embarrassment of looking totally confused at the gym (though there's no substitute to a trainer who knows what he's doing)
- healthy eating habits, and detailed analysis of carbs, fats, and other things food is made up of
- coverage of diseases, including STDs and other chronic illnesses

This book is great for independent study, which was the method I used it. Augmenting it with help from a teacher could highlight other areas the book doesn't go quite as in-depth into; in my class's studies, many web sites had to be visited, which added some good knowledge outside the book's scope. Also, each chapter seems to be a little long; splitting some chapters up into shorter sections would have made me feel like I was moving through the book quicker.

However, this is a quality-written book from McGraw Hill. It could be good for anyone, young or old, who doesn't know much but wants to learn how to live a healthy life. If you're looking to get into shape for the summer, but have never paid attention to your health habits before, this book can actually be quite a good starting point: it can help point out how certain foods will affect your body, and give you a quick overview of many common, effective, good exercises. Very recommended for either class or independent study.
