Good info for all runners of any distance 5 out of 5 stars.

As an older beginning runner who has completed a handful of 5Ks these past few months, the idea of a marathon is one of those "why not" ideas that has been creeping into mind. After reading this book, that goal sounds more realistic than ever before.

In my judgement, Mr. Galloway does a nice job of breaking down the details and convincing any runner that, despite someone's age or athletic abilities, not trying to ever run a marathon will cause more anguish years from now than training to run one. I obviously can not speak for advanced runners but I recommend this book to anyone who has broken out of the run-walk combo program and is ready to add some mileage to their workout.

The Maffetone method is not revolutionary and is not a break-through. Hence the title of this book may be a bit misleading. The MAF method is simply low heart-rate walking in order to burn maximal amounts of fat (instead of carbs) while exercising.
The author makes a very strong case for something that any runner knows: slow running builds fitness, is easy on the joints, and also is maximally effective in promoting weight loss. What makes the book strong is the author's ability to take the time and explain the rationale behind this method of slow aerobic burn. I appreciate mixing theory and practice and presenting his case in an intelligent and learned manner.
For those who are not exercisers and who are looking for weight loss, this is a very important book to explain the rationale and get one going.
The book is best used in conjunction with a heart rate monitor.

Workouts for Dummies by Tamilee Webb, whose buffed body is the star of the Buns of Steel workout video series and frequent TV appearances, is a fine source of motivation, information, and specific workout programs. Even if you've never exercised, don't worry--the book starts with topics as basic as choosing shoes and warming up. Then it covers everything you'll need to create an effective exercise program, starting with an explanation of body types (so you don't think you'll end up looking like Cindy Crawford if you don't already) and the workouts that suit your body type. The book gives directions for stretches, aerobic exercises, muscle conditioning (using weights, furniture, exercise bands, and bars), and workouts for different locations (home, office, gym), all with illustrations. This is a lively, unintimidating workout guide, a good companion if you're just starting out. (A little self-serving, though: one chapter is devoted to "Tamilee's Top Ten Workout Videos.")

Confused by all the For Dummies exercise books? If you want a more strenuous strength-training program using free weights and gym machines, try Weight Training for Dummies--it explains how and illustrates exercises. Dr. cooper throughly explains how your body (mainly the heart and lungs) works. The book is about his studies on aerobic exercises and how it affects the body. He talks alot about his subjects and thier conditions and how aerobics helped rid themselves of thier problems. I would say to anyone who is serious about thier health, to buy this book. It's for those who are obese, those with heart and lung conditions and even those who have problems sleeping. This book is basically for anyone and everyone. Buy this book and it may help you live longer and healthier.

I bought'Aerobics' by this author in 1975 when I was 43 and slipping into the state where I was puffing to tie my shoe laces
a friend recommended the book. Without doing anything too drastic in the diet department other than to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and skip fried food.
I started off in the Poor category and commenced the running programme by walking the first week for 1 mile, having to make an effort to do so in under 20 minutes on the first day.
I followed Dr Coopers directions and was amazed to find how accurate his time estimates were and how well I felt as I reduced from 110 Kgs to 85 Kgs within 5 months.
I retired when I turned 69 and now at 73 I have a need to get my arse into gear as my weight has crept up and my cardiovascular system is in dire need of rejuvenating.
I note Dr Cooper has fine tuned his work and I am embarking on his cycling programme with confidence

This book is just what I needed. I can't eat wheat right now because it bothers my nursing son. Finding wheat free, vegan recipes for sweets that taste good was proving to be a daunting task. I was really missing dessert until I found this book. True, it's not gluten-free, but I didn't get the impression it would be. I was able to look through the book a bit on amazon and knew what was used in the recipes.(Thanks amazon) There are people who can't have wheat but have no problems with other gluten containing grains and for them, this book is great. The cookie recipes are amazing. The recipes that call for more barley flour like cakes, muffins and quick breads are a bit health-foody. But we like that. My four year old devours the rapberry muffins like they are going out of style. The gingerbread cookies have also become a favorite around here. I really love having recipes for treats that I can feel good about giving to my kids. It doesn't hurt that us grownups love them too. Thanks Ellen Abraham, for filling the void.

I did this program for about five months and was pleased to find that it actually did work, and it does feel good. You can lose weight on it (I lost about 10 pounds in 3-4 months) and it does develop you aerobically. (I found myself less out-of-breath when I exerted myself in whatever task I had on hand.) You can do as much as you like and as little as about 15 minutes a day, and this is a =real= 15 minutes, not an =exercise= 15 minutes, which normally doesn't include warming up, cooling down, showering, changing clothes, et cetera.

Since the complete thing takes 15 minutes, doesn't require a warm-up or a cool-down, isn't likely to make you sweat, or even require work-out clothes, it's a good way to get some activity into your life. It's easy to do when injured, and probably even a good idea when sick in many cases, unlike most workouts. You can even do it in the car.

Are there problems with it? Well, yes, you might find it very unpleasant to actually =do=. Intense breathing is not for everyone. (Some people compare it to yoga, but it's not at all meditative.) You're also not going to get the kind of muscles you'll get from the Body-for-LIFE program (for example) or the sort of weight-loss you might get from the Atkins diet.

But ultimately, I'm glad to have this program in my exercise arsenal. It can give you an energy boost when you're stuck in traffic, give you a way to keep your aerobic level up after a long period of not exercising, and is definitely a worthwhile effort.
