A Must-Have For Beginning Piano Students 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am an adult beginner and using the Alfred Basic Adult course books. I like this 'Finger Aerobics' book and I use it every day in conjunction with the lesson book. I use the exercises in this book as warm-ups because it gets my mind thinking about which fingers play which notes before I open up and review lesson material.

Highly recommend this book for piano students of any age, young or old. My kids who are also piano students, have fun with this book as well.

Great exercise for the untrained fingers 5 out of 5 stars.

Never played piano in my life. I used this book in conjunction with Play Piano Now Book 1 of the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course. The exercises are easy to learn and understand. I have memorized the warm ups by using them every day. My fingers behave themselves now when I sit down to practice. I'm moving on to Play Piano Now Book 2. Woohoo! Not bad for a great grandma.

Whom are we kidding? 1 out of 5 stars.
88 of 101 people found this review helpful.

I had bought the book on the strength of the seemingly unanimous five-star reviews. It became clear within minutes that this is the proverbial caveat emptor. One is left wondering how many of these reviews are planted by friends and/or relatives because - anyone with half a brain is able to quickly determine that the book is mostly rubbish. It is a self-published job, amateurishly produced and even more amateurishly written. It has 96 numbered pages, but chapter 1 only starts on p. 11 and the last chapter ends on p. 82. In between you have another 13 pages of blah testimonials with photos of those giving them - likely the author's idea of flattering all her friends ("Oh look, I'm in a book"). Need I say that all the photos, besides being of execrable quality, are well nigh useless on the instructional front? The author is a "certified reboundologist". Correspondence course, anyone? She is "dedicated to...assisting people to care for their Holy Temples for...planetary healing". 'Nuff said?
She endorses a single manufacturer of Rebounders whose name she can't spell right (p. 78). Be warned.

Editorial Review:

A simple, down to earth, practical guide to rebounding. Short, concise, easy to read chapters. Gives a capsule overview of the potential health benefits of rebounding.

Editorial Review:

Would you flee in terror if confronted with a room full of sweaty people in spandex thongs?

Are you not immune to the occasional Joe Strummer-style air guitar jump?

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, here at last is your workout book. As simple as throwing on that old Ramones (or even White Stripes) record, punk meets fitness in an exercise craze that is spreading like wildfire amongst teens and aging rockers alike: Punk Rock Aerobics. Though punk and aerobics may seem to be unlikely bedfellows -the love child of Richard Hell and Richard Simmons?-here are two "formerly decrepit, lazy, cigarette-smoking, beer drinking" rockers-turned-certified-aerobics-instructors as enthusiastic about X and Iggy Pop as they are about getting into shape.

Full of easy-to-follow moves in a home-exercise-friendly format, Punk Rock Aerobics is a calorie-burning, DIY workout. Back in the "good old days" cigarettes might have sufficed to keep rockers slim, posit these authors, but to really be able to rock out all night, you need to drop those chips and get off the couch. Peppered throughout to help you stay inspired are Q&A's and photos of rockers on their own workout routines:

  • J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. perfecting the "Face Down Butt Lift."
  • Mary Timony doing the "Jumping Jacked Ups."
  • K Records' Calvin Johnson on the philosophical implications of Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore declaring "it's not the poundage so much as the roundage that I have a problem with."
  • Hugo Burnham on the percentage of Jack Daniels (60) that comprised his sweat back in his glory days drumming for Gang of Four.

Also included to help you get rid of the Schlitz gut is a sure-to-be-controversial discography for picking your favorite MP3's, CD's, and LP's. As Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth declares, "Just put on yr favorite punker and "kick out the jams, motherf***er."

The first book on water exercise that truly makes sense. 5 out of 5 stars.
58 of 69 people found this review helpful.

A well-written first person summary from two authors who are authorities in water exercise, one a swimming coach and triathlete, the other a Harvard sports medicine surgeon. A concise description of what is medically and scientifically sound for water exercise, yet dispersed with real-life exercises and experiences. There are many mentions of their experiences in the water with famous athletes and details of what works for them. There is a very informative guide at the end which explains their philosophy on nutrition, aerobic exercise and flexibility. It is an inspirational reading on a topic which needs more authority. I want to read the next book they write together! It is easy and informative reading, and a must for both the serious athlete and the athlete looking for a tough workout in a forgiving environment.

    Editorial Review:

There's a lot of mythology surrounding swimming and water exercises: that water work is only for senior citizens, arthritis sufferers and rehabbing professional athletes; that it's not an efficient way to build cardiovascular endurance or burn fat; that it's inferior to land-based exercise programs like running and weight training. Water Workouts not only attacks those myths, it shows how to use a swimming pool and a few pieces of equipment to improve everything: strength, endurance, flexibility, muscularity. If you don't mind getting wet, this is one of the best workout manuals you'll find.

Very Basic 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a very bland book with little new to offer. The book is broken down into the most basic systems of training. If you like to keep things very simple you might like the book.

If you want more scientific information, running pace tables, and more detailed information about the hows and whys of training, I would suggest one of the "Daniels" books.

As a long time runner this is one of the books I will look through once and put aside. If you are an experienced runner and racer you will probably be wasting your money.

    Editorial Review:

A five step program for successful racing at 10 and 5 kilometers...the two most popular race distances. Run up the training pyramid with these five steps. One. Build mileage and aerobic base while maintaining legspeed with fartlek running. Two. Run hills and other resistance training and use strength training to build your running muscles. Three. Turn this strength into speed endurance with anaerobic threshold running at 15K race pace. Four. Further improve running efficiency and your VO2 max by running intervals at 2 mile to 5K race pace. Five. Race Peaking. Resting and special speed sessions to reach the peak of your pyramid. 60 pages of training schedules for 20 to 100 miles per week; for the less intense to the serious racers.

Heart and Soul of Yoga Teaching. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a nice book on the more fast pace selling of health and fitness as a big business. It gives insight into the pace and skills someone needs if they are out to make a lot of money on the yoga fad. However, being a more serious teacher of the heart and soul of yoga, it does not add much philosophically to the ethics of teaching and sharing in the traditions of yoga according to the great masters and gurus. I was left feeling that "making the sale and always be closing" are the most important aspect of the yoga business.Of course, this is the title of the book. This book is good for the yoga teacher and studio owner who will only be in the yoga business until the next great fad comes along.

    Editorial Review:

“Selling Yoga” is an income-producing system that was created to help yoga instructors and yoga studio owners in the industry improve their ability to mature and expand in the business. This book was written in a basic form from information that has been tried, tested and enhanced. Many books have been written on how to implement an effective way to become successful in business many books may cover the latest and newest when it comes to starting a business. This book, however, actually teaches real techniques used by the most successful operators in the yoga industry. These proven techniques have escalated the experts to the top of their game, on the business side! It’s one thing to be able to teach innovative and exotic classes, but to become powerful and successful with your own business in yoga is the ultimate goal and what you will learn in this book.

BASIC Steps to Godly Fitness 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Wow! It almost doesn't seem real that something so simple can be so life-changing. But it is. I couldn't put this book down and I'm about to pick it up again for another read-through.

Laurette Willis incorporates her own life experiences with Biblical truth to give an inspiring and powerful testimony and plan for Godly fitness. For those of us who have struggled with weight or self-esteem issues throughout our lives, this book is an answer to prayer. Not only does it address the spiritual issues, but also the physical - something I've never found in a single book before.

PraiseMoves, the Christian alternative to yoga, is an extreme answer to prayer. I seriously asked God to show me what yoga was really about and anything I could do that was similar. I googled the subject and ended up at PraiseMoves' website in only a few clicks. This book contains a wonderful introduction to the poses and thoughts behind the movements.

I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for God's way to health - both spiritual and physical.

    Editorial Review:

In this uniquely integrated program, certified personal trainer and aerobic instructor Laurette Willis shares her BASIC (Body And Soul In Christ), step–by–step plan to improve wholeness in body, soul, and spirit.

Convinced that diets alone don’t work, Laurette shows how lasting change starts on the inside, and she leads readers through a process that will help them

    • turn mundane daily activities and exercises into acts of worship
    • develop a healthy self–image through forgiveness and freedom from addiction
    • experience God’s transforming power through praise, prayer, and fasting

Laurette provides readers with plenty of practical opportunities for growth, including “PraiseMoves,” her own unique Christian system of worship and exercise that she calls “a Christ–centered alternative to yoga.”

    Editorial Review:

Deciding to enter your first triathlon is a heady moment--you're ready for the challenge of a swim-bike-run race and pumped to get your body training. Chances are, though, that you're experienced in only one, maybe two of the sports. How do you incorporate the others? What kind of equipment do you need? How often should you be practicing each sport? And what if you're a complete novice, a wanna-be athlete who has not done any of the sports, and you want to enter a triathlon to motivate yourself to get into shape and improve your outlook? Steven Jones, M.D., a professor of preventive medicine and a successful triathlete, has all the answers and reassurances you'll need in his down-to-earth book, updated in 1999, Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals.

As he says in his preface, his book is for the person "who wants to engage in a new and different athletic experience without turning the rest of his or her life upside down in the process and wants to have fun doing so." Focusing on the "marathon-equivalent" triathlon, which is a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike, and a 10-kilometer run (although he does have a brief chapter called "Doing the Duathlon and Going Long"), Jonas helps you decide if a triathlon is right for you, gives his own personal history of how he went from a nonathlete to a racer, and advises on how to pick your first race.

From there, he discusses techniques, the basic principles of training, and how to establish your "aerobic base," the basic level of fitness (especially important for nonexercisers) you need before approaching his "Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals Training Program," a five-hour-a-week, 13-week program to train you for your race. Also covered in the manual is equipment and nutrition. Jonas's style of writing is accessible to the layperson--he doesn't burden you with technical terms or complicated zones or training levels. He even goes through an entire race with you, from the night before to putting air in your bike tires through the actual events right up to the aftermath of the race. The terrific appendix includes diagrams of stretches. While this isn't the book for a seasoned runner looking to improve his overall time, this is the ideal book to provide guidance and encouragement for newbies to the sport. Reading just a few chapters will have you itching to start racing. --Jenny Brown
