Editorial Review:

A leader in respiratory care education for more than 35 years, this comprehensive textbook lays a strong foundation for a successful career. You'll gain a thorough understanding of the role of respiratory therapists (RTs), a scientific basis for treatment, and clinical applications. In-depth discussions progress from the principles of respiratory care to applied anatomy and physiology, assessment, discussion of specific respiratory illnesses, basic therapy, acute and critical care, and preventive and long-term care. Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and Therapist Driven Protocols (TDPs) in appropriate chapters familiarize you with patient care guidelines and decision trees as they are used in practice.

  • A full-color format makes the text easier to read and brings out key detail in the illustrations.
  • Mini-Clinis provide short vignettes applying content in the text to actual patient care, asking you to think critically on problems you may encounter.
  • Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) cover the steps of patient care with important information on indications/contraindications, hazards and complications, assessment of need, assessment of outcome, and monitoring.
  • Therapist-Driven Protocols (TDPs) provide decision trees developed by hospitals, helping you to assess patients, initiate care, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Rules of Thumb highlights rules, formulas, and key points important to clinical practice.
  • Measurable Learning Objectives parallel the areas tested by the NBRC exam, helping you identify important information that goes beyond memorization and recall.
  • Key Point summaries in bulleted format help you clearly identify key concepts covered in each chapter.
  • A Workbook includes a wide range of activities such as NBRC-type multiple-choice questions, case studies, experiments, and hands-on activities, allowing you to apply the knowledge you've gained from the text.

  • New History of Respiratory Care chapter describes the evolution and challenges of this profession.
  • Updated content reflects changes in the field, with additions to the text including:
    • More coverage of evidence-based care
    • Information on HIPAA
    • A discussion of computer applications in a health care setting
    • An emphasis on how nutrition impacts the respiratory system
  • The role of the respiratory therapist in disease management is discussed in the Cardiopulmonary Diseases section.
  • A new appendix cross-references the NBRC examination matrices for the CRT and RRT to content in the book, making it easier to prepare for the NBRC exams.
  • New editor Robert Kacmarek, a well-known figure in respiratory care, has joined Robert Wilkins and James Stoller.

Editorial Review:

Simplifying complex information, this workbook focuses on the most important concepts in Egan's Fundamentals of Respiratory Care, 9th Edition. It makes learning easy by using real-life examples, humor, and a wide range of activities. By highlighting key points, it helps you answer three basic questions: What do I need to know? Why do I need to know it? How will I use it?

  • An understandable and engaging approach breaks down essential information into manageable chunks.
  • Chapter overviews introduce topics and explain how and why each applies to the practice of respiratory care.
  • A review of chapter objectives ensures that you understand the primary concepts from the text.
  • NBRC-style review questions help you prepare for the CRT and the written portion of the RRT exam.
  • Vocabulary review exercises include matching, fill-in-the-blank exercises and crossword puzzles to test your mastery of key terms and acronyms.
  • Case studies ask you to apply concepts to the real world.
  • Critical-thinking questions ask you to analyze potential rewards and pitfalls in applying your knowledge to a clinical environment.
  • Web links are suggested for further research and study.
  • Answers to all questions/activities, with references to the textbook and rationales, are included on Evolve Student Resources.

Can you tell I really like this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

"Sinus Survival: A Self-help Guide" by Robert Ivker (isbn: 1585420581) This `survival' book is amazing. (In contrast to "The Sinus Cure" by Debra Fulghum Bruce, which in my opinion, okay, I'll say it: "sucks"). I've owned both books for five+ years now. In short, the `survival' book gives me plenty of `knowledge meat' to work with, while the `cure' book didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. The `survival' book, on the other hand, I refer to every year, and learn (or relearn) more than I did before. Dr Ivker, is a sinusitis sufferer himself, went the extra hoops beyond MD to become DO and has many self-help options in here. He includes a thorough exploration of what EMT-physicians consider, and/or exams to possibly do, or surgeries, etc and why. True to his word, I've followed his steps and have become someone who regularly had two or more sinus infections every year, to someone who has been infection-free for five and counting. And for those earlier unfortunate times while suffering from one, I still gained immediate relief (beyond the antibiotics) from some specific steps he recommends. Can you tell I really like this book! Lol's

Editorial Review:

Sinus Survival provides crucial guidance and information on such topics as:
how to select over-the-counter drugs that won't do more harm than good;
how to learn simple exercises that can aid sinus drainage; and
how dietary and lifestyle changes can significantly relieve sinus and respiratory disease.

I didn't feel it correlated with my textbooks 2 out of 5 stars.

I felt like the assignments and questions inside this lab book were really difficult for me to do as a student because I couldn't find the information in any of the 3 textbooks we have. I didn't like the "illustartions" either. I would have preferred real photos.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive laboratory manual with a multitude of laboratory ac tivities and 50 procedural competency evaluations is designed to provi de hands-on technical and communication skills necessary for students to integrate theory and clinical practice. It can be used in both resp iratory therapy and respiratory therapy technician programs and in con junction with any textbook.

Editorial Review:

The first book to address emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) from a nutritional and alternative medicine approach

• Explains the benefits of detoxification, dietary changes, and food combining

• Details 45 suggested herbs and 26 nutritional supplements as well as information on how to stop smoking

Approximately 35 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with some form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)--emphysema constituting 18 million of that group. Worldwide, as many as 293 million people suffer with these conditions. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in America, claiming nearly 120,000 lives annually. Yet conventional approaches to treatment, with their regimens of drugs and unceasing physical therapy, provide neither cure nor significant relief.

In Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD, Robert Green shows that alternative holistic therapies ranging from herbs to homeopathy offer great promise in relieving COPD’s debilitating symptoms. Starting with the basics of the physiology of respiration, Green presents a comprehensive program that includes detoxification, dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and herbal medicine; breathing techniques and exercise options such as aerobics, yoga, qigong, and tai chi; and alternative therapies such as homeopathy, acupuncture, and massage--noting how and why each therapy works. He also details how to stop smoking, includes resources for alternative health practitioners, and provides sources for the alternative products recommended.

Good- But.... 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book is very informative, but a lot of the book deals with how the sinuses work, and how they are subject to irritation. While this is not bad information, it is dealt with too often. I basically wanted this book for relief of my problems, and in that respect, it is quite thorough. However, just skim through the first few chapters to get ideas about correcting your sinus problems.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Josephson's unique five-step program combines the best practices from traditional and alternative medicine to bring relief to the millions who suffer from respiratory problems. Recent research shows that many respiratory diseases are more related than previously thought. Their common, underlying cause is what Dr. Josephson terms "Chronic Airway-Digestive Inflammatory Disease" (CAID). His groundbreaking, proven approach will provide real relief from sinus disease, allergies, asthma, sinus infections, sinus headaches, bronchitis, ear infections, snoring, sleep apnea, GERD, and the acute mold epidemic. Sinus Relief Now will show how to:

- Maintain proper sinus care
- Remove mold and other irritants from the home, office, and car
- Follow a sinus-friendly nutrition program
- Find the right medications and treatments
- Experience total-body health

Yes, it is hard to accept but it has relieved my asthma greatly.. 5 out of 5 stars.

After a lifetime of being told that salt is bad for me, I finally let go and started to use celtic sea salt liberally (as prescribed in the book). At first I only drank the water, but adding the salt completely maximized my progress. At 4 separate times this past weekend, I stopped my own asthma attacks at each onset. It took me about 7-10 minutes each time. It took alot for me not to use my inhaler, and to just give the water & salt a chance to work. I am extremely grateful and rather emotional about it, since I thought I would be on my proventil inhaler for the rest of my life. The inhaler has caused a number of side effects, and I am now planning a detox to remove the residue of this drug from my body, which I've been dependent on for more than 27 years. And I've only been doing this seriously for 2 weeks, (and getting better with each day). I thank "Dr.B" for giving me my health back (along with hundreds of others whose testimonials I've read on the www.watercure2.com site). These are the same testimonials I was so compelled to read again and again, because I just could not believe and accept that something so simple could cure this disease that left me so weak and scared about the future of my health. Not to mention, very likely preventing other diseases I would be on the road towards. I suppose this is my own testimonial, because it really happened, and I hope that readers searching for an answer will forget their fears (that it won't work) and try it. Yes, it is still hard even for me to believe...even though it continues to work for me. But I do know for sure that I will never stop Dr.B's water & salt prescription. I will say this - if you want your health back, just take it back by taking action.

Editorial Review:

It's a world we barely see, but it is teeming with life. In the dust of a typical house, carpet beetles, mites, silverfish, and other creatures live and die, producing new generations every few months. Mold, bacteria, and yeast lurk undetected in heating and cooling systems. Debris dispersed into the air from these organisms can cause runny noses, itchy eyes, coughing, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Some people, especially those made highly sensitive by allergies, suffer from devastating health problems and the worry that, as one such sufferer lamented, "My house is killing me!"

Scrutinizing house dust and air samples with a microscope, indoor air quality expert Jeffrey C. May has spent his career helping people identify what's causing their chronic health problems. In My House Is Killing Me! he draws on the dramatic personal stories of his clients' suffering and relief to help readers understand the links between environmental factors and problems like allergies and asthma. Explaining how air conditioning, finished basements, and other home features affect air quality, he offers a step-by-step approach to identifying, controlling, and often eliminating the sources of indoor pollutants and allergens. If we could see this contamination, May observes, the air would look as murky as stagnant water, and we would know not to breathe it.

Reading My House Is Killing Me! lets you see your house the way an expert would. Just as he looks at spaces and systems during an indoor air quality investigation, May focuses first on the areas of daily life (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen), then looks into attics and basements (including heating and air conditioning), and finally moves outside to the garage and the exterior of a home. Along with offering a wealth of practical advice and proven solutions for various problems, he includes a glossary of terms and a list of valuable resources.
