Superb source for beyond first aid 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It's no surprise that every reviewer has given this excellent and comprehensive book five stars.

Written by William Forgey, MD, former president of the Wilderness Medicine Society it goes beyond first aid, dealing with situations where you cannot merely administer initial care and then count on a rapid evacuation. Forgey writes with a light hand; he avoids jargon and has a dry sense of humor. For example (p. 157): "How do you calm a person who's just been bitten by a snake? Not surprisingly, just telling him to remain calm won't work."

There are seven chapters, beginning with assessment and stabilization, and going through body system disease symptoms, injuries, bites and stings, infectious diseases, and environmental injuries. There is an excellent appendix for putting together wilderness first aid/medical kits, both with prescription, and non-prescription meds, and with a bandaging module.

You don't have to be physician, nurse, or EMT to benefit from the book. All the information, is practical and hands-on; of value to the layperson who is interested in first aid and emergency medical situations. After an initial reading, Wilderness Medicine is a fine reference work.

Editorial Review:

It's every pet owner's nightmare: suddenly your four-legged friend isn't breathing. What to do? There is no 911 for pets, so it's up to you to save a life. The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats is a straightforward guide that covers both major problems--CPR, heat stroke, and strangulation--and minor ones, such as swollen tails, ingrown nails, and flea allergies. Beginning with simple tests and explanations of general care issues like dehydration examinations and triage, this guide then moves on to an alphabetical listing of every possible situation, from arrow wounds to worms.

The individual sections are good for both general reading and instant assistance. Each one starts with a notice of when to call the vet--immediately, the same day, or as needed. It also lists what items from your pet's medicine chest will be needed, which may include anything from corn syrup to towels and panty hose. The information that follows this simple checklist is divided into "do this now," "special situations," "follow-up care," and "the best approach." Whenever necessary, simple sketches are included to help show proper technique, such as fashioning an instant muzzle from a pair of nylons, or how to cover a dog's head in case of an ear-flap injury. Relying frequently on common household items like antihistamines, turkey basters, Gatorade, and plastic wrap, this guide assumes most of us won't have special medical training or supplies and focuses on very specific and simple methods of helping your pet achieve the best possible care. Even more importantly, many suggestions are included on prevention of accidents--isn't it easier to get that window screen repaired than to rush your kitty to the vet after a bad fall?--Jill Lightner

Great book for Figuring out Fourth Year and Applications 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I really like this book and am glad I found it. I was not a fan of the First Aid for Step I, and so was leery of using this book but as I looked through it I felt it was very complete.

I have felt sort of clueless about the whole application process and how to figure out what I could do, what fields I wanted to go into, what fields are competitive but still - somehow - I could find a way in. There really aren't a lot of resources on this whole process and word of mouth is not enough. Considering how incredibly important the third/four years are in terms of strategizing for your future, I am surprised how few real resources there are. People talk about the Iverson book but I found it too simplistic.

I also need some handholding in simple areas I might be unfamiliar with, like how to write your personal statement, CV and application and this book does a good job of addressing that. Overall, I think this book is a sleeper and I totally recommend it.

Needs Update 3 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

The book has much of what you expect in a first aid book. The one problem is that the book hasn't been updated in a long time. One of the treatments recommended was outdated and wrong.

A must for every home 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the books Michael Hyatt recommends be in your Y2K library. It is the standard reference for dealing with injury and illness until the patient can get to a doctor.

The odds are that every day, people will be injured and you will want to be able to keep them alive and from additional injury. The Red Cross has been a major player in this area throughout the 20th century, and this book is a valuable tool for every household today AND in 2000. The more likely Y2K scenarios will still have medical help available, perhaps just harder to access. Even in the unlikely case where medical care is unavailable, the steps in this book will still be the appropriate first steps for treatment. You may want to find a book on 'wilderness medicine' to cover followup treatment if no doctor is available.

A First Aid book written by those who know 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent first aid book, particulairly for someone like me who only has basic first aid training. It was written by the American College of Emergency Physicians, so you know that it is truly definitive on the issue of first aid. The book is comprehensive, yet easy to use and color coded. The major benefits of the book include hundreds of photos, so that you are not simply told what to do, but shown. Another benefit is that it outlines how to handle various emergency situations, and how to exactly assist EMS when they arrive. It also tells you what you should treat and when you should call 911. A negative on the book is that it often refers you to other sections of the book during emergency procedures, something that there probably isn't time for in a real emergency. However, that should encourage your to become familiar with procedures before they happen. Overall, it is an easy to use first aid manual with lots of pictures that can help you to "[treat] emergency victims of all ages in any situation."

Editorial Review:

The American College of Emergency Physicians has created an essential and comprehensive first aid manual with treatments and techniques explained, step-by-step and illustrated with hundreds of photographs to show how to perform them correctly. Featuring important life-saving procedures, including rescue breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, treatment for a blocked airway, and other life-threatening situations, the book also provides detailed anatomical information and offers treatments for people of any age in any situation.

Good for review, but not complete 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

My experience with First-Aid books has generally been very positive. I've used the series during my studies for all my USMLE steps, and they've been very helful.

First Aid for the Pediatric Boards will not disappoint. It is well written, with a logical structure and a concise nature. However, in an effort to maintain conciseness, I feel some pertinent information has been left out.

This book is best used by people who study over a long period - and then you will have an opportunity to write your notes along the margins (which are, by the way, nice and spacious). This will turn this book into the perfect read for the two weeks prior to the exam.

If you use this book as your sole studying source, you might pass - but only if you memorize the book entirely. Your volume of information will be hovering along the "just-enough" level and you will not afford losing a single question.

Good luck to all of us!

AHA HS First Aid/CPR/AED 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent course book for teaching/learning community level (heartsaver level), citizen/bystander CPR/AED and First Aid. Useful for people involved with youth groups, civic groups, those who may be acting like "first responders" etc. Very well written, easy to read, understand and learn from. Main points are reinforced with multiple scenarios and "bullet points". A great resource to keep at home as well for reference. I have taught this course many times and all the students give high praise for this manual/workbook. Retails $15 from American Heart Association authorized distributors (eg: www.worldpoint.com)

Editorial Review:

This 2006 revised student workbook, one of two Heartsaver First Aid texts, contains information on how to manage illness and injuries in the first few minutes of an emergency until professional help arrives. Workbook contains the three required modules (General Principles, Medical Emergencies, and Injury Emergencies) and three optional modules (CPR, AED, and Environmental Emergencies) for the Heartsaver First Aid Course. Comes shrink-wrapped with the Heartsaver First Aid Quick Reference Card (#80-1057), the Adult CPR And AED Reminder Card, the Child And Infant CPR And AED Reminder Card, and a CD containing supplemental CPR and AED skills information. Ideal for first responders and for students attending the Heartsaver First Aid course.
