A hiking and camping necessity. 5 out of 5 stars.

A recommended take-along tote for any wilderness hiker; as is Buck Tilton and Frank Hubbell's third edition of Medicine For The Backcountry more specific to wilderness first aid treatments. From broken bones to heat and cold injuries, this tells how to make do until civilization is reached.

Good introduction to wilderness first aid 4 out of 5 stars.

Medicine for the Backcountry is a great general-purpose guide to wilderness medicine in the U.S. and Canada. For anyone needing to educate themselves on wilderness first aid, or in need of a book to take along on an extended trip, I can highly recommend it. I give it four instead of five stars only because it doesn't cover some of the more esoteric third-world illnesses and treatments.

Good As Far As It Goes 3 out of 5 stars.

The authors are EMT's and have had wilderness experience. The book is similar to a number of other books on basic wilderness first aid but is lacking in at least a couple of areas. Various ways of making an improvised stretcher (litter) were not covered. Getting help and communicating with SAR is not covered. What is covered is all patient assessment and standard first aid as is protocol for EMT's. I was disappointed there wasn't more application to wilderness situations. "Medicine for the Outdoors" by Paul s. Auerbach is far more complete and deals better with the harsh realities you face with medical issues in the wilderness. I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 because it might be a starting place for someone with little experience in first aid. I would also like to see these types of books talk about prevention, at very least as an introduction to the topic.

Editorial Review:

Directed at the layperson, this superbly useful book on wilderness medicine makes a fairly complicated subject easy to understand.

A lightweight and easy to read self-care medical book. 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Even though the cover claims that the book is 'The Complete Illustrated Guide to Medical Self-Care', there are better books that you can purchase for a few dollars more that meet the claim. It is very easy to read and not intimidating at all like the other medical self-care books. That is probably why this book is so popular. I was given this copy free by my HMO a long time back and I have found it valuable enough to keep it for all these years. Anytime I experience some symptoms of bad health, I refer to this book first to see if I can find a quick solution. Only if I can't find it in this book, do I pull out my other two books - 'The Merck Manual of Medical Information' and 'The American Medical Association Family Medical Guide' which are absolutely the best in the field.

There is a very good section on preventive health care at the beginning of the book followed by 1-2 page descriptions of 175+ symptoms and home treatment advice. For each symptom, there is a simple flow chart that is easy to follow in case you are experiencing that symptom. The flow chart will lead you through possible causes of the symptom and what to do about it. The especially useful feature of this flow chart technique is the focus on when to apply home treatment and when to see a doctor. My family and I have always been interested in treating medical problems at home if possible before getting the medical establishments involved. This book helped us try to treat basic symptoms at home more effectively without fear of making a mistake.

I am not sure if I would recommend the purchase of this book, but if you receive a questionaire from your HMO that promises to mail you this book for filling out the form, I would say 'go for it'. I definitely recommend buying one of the following two books for home self-care - The Merck Manual of Medical Information and The American Medical Association Family Medical Guide. If in doubt, all of these books strongly advice you to seek a medical professional's assistance. Bottom line - I don't think it hurts to have a couple of self-care books that arm you with knowledge about basic health related problems and maybe even appease your hypochondriac side.

Editorial Review:

Take Care of Yourself is easy to use, even in a crisis. Simply look up a symptom in one of the chapters listed at the left. You’ll find a complete explanation of likely causes and how you might relieve that problem at home. Diagrams will help you recognize problems and, in many cases, treat them quickly and easily. Easy-to-follow decision charts tell you exactly when to see a doctor. This book also covers emergencies, how to avoid health problems, what to keep in a home pharmacy, and how to work best with your doctor. Take Care of Yourself belongs in every home.Easy-to-use decision charts quickly show how to treat problems at home, and when to see a doctor.

Great Photos, A Bit Tricky to Follow! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

DK books are famous for their photos, and this is no exception. Each page for first aid, home emergency, or natural disaster has great descriptive pictures.

However.....directions are given in a graph-type form. It's almost like an old DOS program with the "if yes, if no" commands. Not at all easy to follow in a real emergency! I like our book, but probably would not have bought it if I knew the directions required such concentration!!

Editorial Review:

Providing the key to solving a wide range of problems in the home, the Home Emergency Guide features clear, user-friendly symptom charts to help readers determine whether to call an ambulance or a doctor, or to use self-help measures. From resuscitating a victim or making a sling to learning how to snake a toilet or dealing with a stovetop fire, as well as what to do in case of a hurricane, tornado, or earthquake, this all in one emergency guide explains what steps should be taken in order to keep the reader and family safe, before, during, and after the event.

A definite lifeguard training text! 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As a lifeguard training instructor with the American Red Cross, I would recommend this book! A key chapter is chapter 2 which mentions the American with Disabilities Act or ADA and how a lifeguard should interact with the public. Rescue skills are no good if you don't have good people skills! I like the idea of additional modules with chapters 13 and 14 lifeguarding at waterpark and waterfront facilities. SO if you take the additional modules you already have the book!!

The ALMOST Definative Ligfeguard Training Text 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor I have had the opertunity to teach many classes using the above text. Very detailed descriptions and photographs of skills. My only complaint about this text is that you still need a seperate book for the CPR portion of the course. The r2001 release of te program has the CPR in the same book. Even while teaching to the new program, Lifeguarding Today remains one of my most used books for information and examples.

A must in Water Safety 4 out of 5 stars.

This book does a good job of explaining lifeguarding and the skills needed. It has a lot of great information. There is information in this book that other lifeguard courses don't focus on and I feel as an aquatics director is needed. I would have liked to see CPR skills included, some of the old Red Cross skills, and skills tought in other lifeguard courses. However everything this book is worth reading. I liked it so much that I now teach the course. This is a good buy.

Editorial Review:

The public's fascination with emergency rooms, as evidenced by the popularity of the television show "ER," is attributable to the fact that ER's are home to a variety of dramatic and unusual events. However, the stories in this book make the television program seem as bland as Styrofoam. Written by an emergency room physician with contributions from his colleagues, this book presents some of the most unique emergency room stories ever told. Readers will be captivated by a collection of incredible, tragic, humorous, poignant, uplifting, thought-provoking, and bizarre tales. It's been said that truth is stranger than fiction. This is particularly true in emergency rooms, where the endless parade of strange events can leave even seasoned ER doctors shocked in disbelief. This is a book that you won't be able to put down.

These stories focus upon the unusual aspects of each particular case, and rarely delve into the specifics of medical or surgical treatment. The intriguing nature of these cases lies not in catheter sizes and other bits of medical minutiae, but rather in the unique interplay between the ER staff, the patient, and heaven knows who or what else.

Curiously, books of this genre which concentrate upon nothing but emergencies fail to accurately convey the spirit and pulse of real emergency rooms. That's because ER patients often have no problem which can be construed to be an emergency. While they may have no pressing medical problems, they often present with interesting cases. In fact, there is often an inverse correlation between the seriousness of a case and its uniqueness. In my opinion, it is that latter element which provides the fodder for some highly captivating stories.

If you’re looking for entertainment, you won’t be disappointed. However, there is more than simple amusement in these pages. You will meet healthcare personnel whose thirst for revenge is chilling. You will read about people who look for love in the ER—of all places! You will hold your breath as I tiptoe through a case in which the patient was at risk of being murdered—by her father. You will meet a beautiful teenager who tried killing herself after having an affair with her psychiatrist. You will watch me fight to keep a patient from endangering the lives of dozens of hospital visitors. You will encounter people with very unusual habits. You will hear about a child who was shot in the head with a bullet, but didn’t know it. You will find out if I can resist the temptation of a gorgeous woman who offered me her body in exchange for a prescription for narcotics. You will witness a shocking end to a friendship. You will read about how an uppity nurse refused to ease the suffering of a dying man. You will understand how a homeless man gave me an unexpected insight into why some homeless people are homeless. You will observe a patient eat a sandwich that was soaked with the blood of his mother. You will discover how a man used a gun to seek revenge against a pit bull that had savagely mauled his young daughter. You will see your tax dollars and insurance premiums go up in smoke as the price of maintaining the status quo, and you’ll understand why the shenanigans of lawyers are more than an economic drain. You will discover why ER docs have the highest burnout rate of any medical specialty, and you’ll begin to see the Hollywood depictions of the ER for just what they are—fiction. These stories, and several dozen more, are in Believe It or Not! TRUE Emergency Room Stories.

One of my goals in writing this book was to give you an idea of what it is like to be a real ER doctor in a real ER. To achieve this end, I have sometimes appended my opinions to the stories. As you will see, my views have been influenced by repeated exposure to events which are outrageous, maddening, and just plain wacky. But that's the reality of a real ER; to ignore it is to miss an integral aspect of its quintessence. This book is a window into another world—the world of emergency medicine. Entering this strange world will undoubtedly leave an indelible impression upon you, as it has me.
