Good book if you are in American med school 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Probably excellent source of statistics of percentages of positions occupied by American graduate and foreign med grad, salaries, unmatched positions in each sub categories of residencies programs - are portrayed.
Although they are mere numbers, certainly other additional factors played in major role exemplified as nepotism, connection, US clinical experiences were simply ignored or not mentioned at all. It also lacks prospective point of view of foreign medical graduate and how they have to approach which oftentimes differ greatly from those of American graduates.

No other books showed and listed examples of comprehensive letter of recommendations, Curriculum vitae, personal statements and so ons. One comes to understanding what is required in producing decent documents when faced with these challenges.

Overall, this book shouldn't be a sole example to steer clear your residency positions if you are foreign med grad, but some portions of this book presents with second-to-none series of how to create good documents.

Good for review, but not complete 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

My experience with First-Aid books has generally been very positive. I've used the series during my studies for all my USMLE steps, and they've been very helful.

First Aid for the Pediatric Boards will not disappoint. It is well written, with a logical structure and a concise nature. However, in an effort to maintain conciseness, I feel some pertinent information has been left out.

This book is best used by people who study over a long period - and then you will have an opportunity to write your notes along the margins (which are, by the way, nice and spacious). This will turn this book into the perfect read for the two weeks prior to the exam.

If you use this book as your sole studying source, you might pass - but only if you memorize the book entirely. Your volume of information will be hovering along the "just-enough" level and you will not afford losing a single question.

Good luck to all of us!

Good Book 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a good reference book although some of the info in it is pretty dated. If you have plenty of room and just want another book to reference this is a good buy, however if you are looking for 'THE BOOK' to put in your aid bag, then i would go with the air force's
Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook by Steve Yevich I have used it extensively and it covers just about everything you could need. If you are looking for books for an Aid Station or for use out of an operating base Tintinali's Emergency medicine text book is excellent, there are many differing opinions on the surg books so ill leave that one alone.

Editorial Review:

The finest book on basic First Aid available; this manual is based on a great deal of experience under primitive conditions. Chapters include basic life saving first aid, opening the airway and restoring breathing, stop bleeding, treat for shock, first aid for common emergencies. Also, contents of first aid case and kits. Very well illustrated. Do not let yourself or your buddy die; read this book!

Editorial Review:

What do you do if you're 25 miles into the backcountry and a member of your hiking party develops appendicitis? Or if you're nearing the summit of a 14,000-foot peak and your climbing partner suffers a ruptured cornea from the altitude? If you thought ahead, you'd pull out your copy of Medicine for Mountaineering. This is probably the top book to carry for serious backcountry injuries. There are other titles that cover basic first aid, but not with this book's depth and specificity.

Ten M.D.s with a fondness for wilderness outings contributed to the chapters, and it shows: medical jargon abounds. But don't be intimidated by words like thrombophlebitis or pneumothorax--you might need to know how to treat blood clots in the legs or a ruptured lung. Most of the injuries covered have their origin in high-altitude mishaps, whether it be kidney infections from dehydration or blunt head trauma from falling rocks. Other ailments like appendicitis and heart disorders are less common, but if they strike in the backcountry, it's vital to know what to do. The range of medical advice stretches all the way to administering intravenous drips and performing tube thoracostomies (inserting a drain valve into a patient's fluid-filled lungs). Though the authors warn that such procedures should be performed by a trained physician, if it's a life-and-death situation miles from any hospital, these instructions could make all the difference. Other topics covered include: soft-tissue injuries, fractures, burns, gastrointestinal disorders, neural disorders, infections, allergies, heat and solar injuries, animal bites and stings, and cold injuries. A list of useful prescription drugs for mountaineering is also valuable.

Who could benefit from this book? Anyone venturing into the outdoors, but particularly those bound for remote locations who've already mastered basic first aid. Emergency medical technicians will find some of the topics familiar, but even they won't be expert in all the injuries outlined here. At 20 ounces, Medicine for Mountaineering is worth the extra weight in your pack. --Demian McLean

Carry this on long expeditions 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the book I carry on long expeditions. I carry a little tiny book by Tilton on short trips, but on longer trips I like this book because it covers just about everything I know how to manage (I'm a WFR and I'm the local SAR Commander.)

Editorial Review:

This revised edition of NOLS Wilderness First Aid reflects the changing field of wilderness medicine. Designed as a field textbook for the NOLS wilderness first aid curriculum, it helps train outdoor leaders to prevent, recognize, and treat common medical problems and to stabilize a severely ill or injured patient for evacuation. A vital resource for outdoor enthusiasts, this book covers fundamental topics in first aid--patient assessment, shock, soft tissue injury, burns, fractures and dislocations, and chest, head, and abdominal injury. It explains how to handle environmental problems posed by heat, cold, water, altitude, and poisonous plants and animals. Also discussed are issues related to expedition medicine as well as leadership, teamwork, and communication for rescue groups. While risk can be minimized through good judgment, skills, and experience, being prepared for emergencies in the wild is an essential component of good outdoor leadership.

Safety above all else 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Although this book may not cover EVERY detail about back country survival, it definitely gives some good pointers whether a person is in a large group or a small one.

Mountaineering is a dangerous sport, and the tactics and procedures in this book can be applied to every day situations as well.

This is a definite must-read for anyone who is responsible for another life -- from trail guides to backpackers to parents to babysitters -- it is a must-have for every household!

Editorial Review:

·Revised to meet the current standards of first aid care by the American Red Cross and the Wilderness Medical Society
·Updated figures and drawings that illustrate essential first aid skills
·New quick-reference boxes that summarize recognition and treatment of many first-aid problems

This completely revised and updated fifth edition gives you all the latest information on assessing and treating conditions you may encounter in the wild, from serious injuries such as dislocations and fractures to unexpected major illness to weather-related problems. With quick-reference checklists of symptoms and procedures, recommendations on first aid kits and equipment, and more, Mountaineering First Aid will prepare you for anything in the backcountry.

Outstanding educational resource 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the fifth report in this series I've read. It is the best resource for finding out what really hurts, cripples and kills people involved in mountaineering. You may read "On Rope", John Long, Craig Leubben, Craig Connelly, "Freedom of the Hills", etc., to find out what to do correctly, but the ANAM books will provide a strong sense of what can go wrong, when and where procedures should become your friend, and you'll read real case studies of how to avoid problematic issues when in the wilderness or mountainous terrain. Regarding practical mountaineering and climbing, I've learned at least as much from ANAM as I have from any other five titles. I believe it should be required reading for anyone transitioning from gym climbing to real rock. Or for those who seek the freedom of the hills.

Editorial Review:

This annual investigative handbook offers detailed reports of more than 60 climbing accidents that occurred in 1997. Analyses of what went wrong in each situation give experienced and beginning mountaineers the opportunity to learn from other climbers' mistakes. From inadequate protection, clothing, or equipment to inexperience, poor judgment, or simple ignorance, the errors recorded in this book are invaluable safety lessons for all climbers.
