I would strongly suggest that you read this book very carfeully because I didnt and did exercises that I shouldnt have (if I had read it correctly I would have realised that). Boy did I suffer! So now I am very nervous about taking any of the advice in the book.

On the other hand I also bought Treat Your Own Neck by the same author and its absolutely excellent. It really has kept me pain free.

Treat your own back 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought this book was great. I didn't have chronic back pain, but my quality of life was definitely affected. I am doing less than half of the exercises recommended in the book and am almost pain free. Highly recommended. Lou

Editorial Review:

Introducing The Portable Miracle Ball, a take-it-anywhere-and-everywhere kit ideal for business travelers and commuters or anyone who spends long hours away from home. Rather than two balls, these exercises require only one, which, at 3 inches in diameter, packs easily and is discreet to use in public. The fully illustrated book is filled with simple exercises that work miracles the minute you settle into your hotel room or board a plane.

Stuck in a long line at the bank? Here are techniques to stretch the muscles and reduce tension right on the spot (and no, you won’t look silly). Feet worn out after a day at the museum? The author’s soothing exercises targeting the insteps and legs will have you up and moving again in no time. And for anyone who experiences discomfort when sitting for long periods, the book features exercises to be performed at your desk, on a plane, or even in a restaurant. A chapter on “Emergency Measures” provides quick relief for back spasms, waking up with extreme stiffness, and other acute problems. The author discusses proper breathing technique, ball placement, and the importance of listening to one’s own body when performing the movements.

Safe Techniques to Reduce Pain, Build Strength, and Speed Recovery

Studies suggest that proactive strengthening and flexibility-recovery exercises can speed healing after spine surgery. Whether you’re preparing for or recovering from spinal surgery, recuperating from a back injury, or just dealing with a back that has "issues," this book offers an effective program to help you manage pain and regain strength and mobility.

These exercises modify traditional Pilates routines to accommodate partially immobilized spines, making this routine safe and effective therapy for your fragile back. The exercises are designed to not compromise a spinal fusion. Instead, they will do what Pilates exercises do best—stretch, strengthen, and tone the trunk with precise positioning and movement, while avoiding potentially dangerous repetition and overexertion.

"Pilates for Fragile Backs is an excellent program for people who have had spinal fusion. The simple but effective Pilates-based exercises will help tremendously in reducing pain and restoring mobility." —Vijay Vad, MD, assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and author of Back Rx and Arthritis Rx.

"…Adhering to a program of Pilates, as described in Pilates for Fragile Backs, under the guidance of a certified instructor can be a most useful means to improve back function and relieve pain. Clearly, this is a valuable therapeutic modality that is underutilized in today’s current pain management programs associated with spinal disorders." —Charles Birbara, MD, chief of rheumatology at Worcester City Hospital in Worcester, MA

"In my practice, I constantly emphasize the importance of proper spinal alignment, good posture and a strong mid-section. Pilates for Fragile Backs highlights these points in an easy-to-follow exercise program for patients suffering with chronic back pain. I have recommended this program to many of my patients, and they are thrilled with the results." —Anthony S. Rainka, DC, South County Chiropractic, Sutton, MA

"As a physical therapist, I have been able to utilize the exercises in Pilates for Fragile Backs with my clients. They have shown a reduction in pain, an improvement in posture and balance, increased strength, and healthier muscle tone. Best of all, the program does wonders for their self-esteem." —Pam Craig-Stewart, PT, director of rehabilitation at Christopher House in Worcester, MA

"This book is a much needed labor of love that offers clear and helpful advice for anyone who has ever lived with chronic back pain. The spine problems addressed in this book are very challenging ones for doctors and therapists alike, and the authors use their first hand experience with spinal trauma to break new ground for exercise therapy. A specifically modified Pilates program indeed offers the possibility of comfort and relief for a largely under-served group in our society." —Ellen Kiley, RYT, therapeutic yoga practitioner specializing in scoliosis and spinal fusion

"I underwent an anterior/posterior fusion (L4-S1) over a year ago due to degenerative disk disease with annular tears. Since then, Pilates has done wonders for me. I started pursuing basic lumbar stabilization mat work a couple of months following surgery. I had urged my neurosurgeon to allow me to begin sooner than usual because I’d had a big increase in pain. My physical therapist felt it had to do with the stiffness that begins to set in as the weeks go by without stretching and exercising. I had every confidence that Pilates would improve my situation and I swear by it! I've been back to work full-time. I am also walking about four miles, three days a week! I’m sure Pilates for Fragile Backs will be a major help to many others." —Diana Stahl, Cincinnati, OH

Yoga helped me! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Thank you to Dr. Loren Fishman for this invaluable guide to preventing and curing back pain with yoga. The beauty of this book, unlike many others, is that it actually acknowledges that there are major types of back pain instead of lumping muscle spasm with arthritis or herniated disc, etc. This book respects the differences, and that is common sense, because what's good for back pain in pregnancy is obviously not the same as what will relieve the pain of a herniated disc. Dr. Fishman's approach is clearly safer and more effective.
For a beginner like me, the simple, lucid discussion of what yoga is was extremely illuminating. I found the explanations of the various types of back pain - arthritis, sacroiliac joint derangement, etc. - easy to read and coherent. . If you don't know what's wrong with you, Dr. Fishman steers you in the right direction with lucid explanations of causes of back pain, including muscular problems, arthritis, sacroiliac joint derangement, etc. He even provides advice (and yoga poses) for people who have recently had back surgery.
The poses themselves are described and/or shown for beginners or for those who are more disabled and at a higher level of difficulty for those who are more advanced. This book is a pleasure to read and to use.

Editorial Review:

From the authors of Back Pain, an easy-to-use book offering yoga techniques to control back pain and sciatica.

This book distinguishes the nine common causes of low back pain, teaches you how to identify them, and describes appropriate yoga poses to relieve each one of them. Loren M. Fishman, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in yoga and the clinical treatment of sciatica and low back pain. Here he helps you determine how to start your own yoga practice or alter your existing practice, depending on your physical condition and the cause of your particular pain. The postures, each one illustrated by a photograph, target specific sources of pain—from arthritis to sacroiliac joint derangement—and demonstrate how you can manage and ultimately end your pain. 107 photographs. Originally published in hardcover as Relief Is in the Stretch.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Batmanghelidj received his formal medical education at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School of London University. He provides for the layman a clear and comprehensive book on the origins of chronic pain. His clinical and scientific research exposes, for the first time, that recurring "chronic pains" are a signal system of the body indicating severe general or local dehydration. Most of these pains can be relieved simply by drinking water. Instead, however, the patient often receives costly pharmaceutical medications which treat rather than cure.

In this book, back pain and rheumatoid joint pain as indicators of local chronic dehydration are explained. The mechanisms involving the important role of water in holding the spinal column together are discussed. Based on years of detailed study of the human anatomy and the science of physiology, Dr. Batmanghelidj has devised a new exercise approach for the successful hydration of the disc core, the retraction of the displaced discs, and immediate relief of pain, even sciatica. These exercises are clearly explained and demonstrated, and may be the only way to save yourself from the surgeon's knife.

This book is unlike any other "how-to" book on the market. It is an instructive presentation about the very simple way of finding comfort and relief from two of the most commonly occurring pains of the body low back pain and rheumatoid joint pain.

The recommended exercises really helped me 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a fairly short book with a lot of good basic information about back care and a recommended set of simple back exercises and stretches, several of them with different alternatives for different fitness levels and situations. (Plan on buying a Swiss/stability ball, although you can do alternative exercises without one. I actually use a stability ball as my computer chair at home anyway for my back's sake, and for a year I needed to use one at work since I couldn't find any regular chair that worked for me when my back was at its worst.)

For me these exercises seemed to make a huge difference. I'd been given about 3 times the number of exercises by my osteopath, but it seemed like some helped and others hurt my back and the result was neutral; plus the long list of exercises was tedious and intimidating. Various yoga and stability ball DVDs were the same way. By contrast, here was a nice simple set of 6 exercises and 4 stretches that I was quite willing to do every other day or so, and they helped and none hurt and I finally found myself functional again! (I add pelvic tilts to the six exercises for a total of seven.)

Hard to say how much was the timing after 2 years of back pain, but this sure SEEMED to help me more than the osteopath, chiropracters, massages, acupuncture, or attempts at trigger point self-therapy.

Good book! 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book pre-order and it arrived very quickly. The author knows his stuff. I am an x-ray tech by trade, so nearly everything I read was understandable to me. He wrote the book so everytone could understand it- medical terms were explained, and there was an extensive glossary of terms. I got the book because my husband suffers badly from back pain and is an avid rider. I occasionally suffer from back pain- usually from doing too much sitting trot. The author was very complete in his assessment of the rider and even the type of horse they should be riding. Fortunately my husband and his horse are a great match, me and my horse aren't so good, but with some work I think we will be OK. The author also went through a series of stretches and also treatment options from traditional to alternative. I found it a very interesting book with a lot of information for anyone who is interested in riding. I even loaned it to my chiropractor who said he would probably get a copy because he treats riders as well.

    Happy reading,
    Kathy

    Editorial Review:

Explaining the impact of horseback riding on the human back in easy-to-understand terms, this guide illustrates how various movements in the saddle affect a rider's back and outlines straightforward steps that can be taken immediately to help keep riders ready to saddle up. Too many riders suffer from back injury, stress, or strain and consequently experience pain when in the saddle or are unable to ride at all. This indispensable guide has step-by-step exercises for strengthening the body for riding, guidance on horse selection and tack selection, and tips on which horse sports are appropriate for riders with various back problems. Traditional and alternative treatments for back pain are also discussed, as are the special considerations of pregnant and elderly riders.
