underwhelmed 3 out of 5 stars.

This is less a review than a reaction--others have "reviewed" the tale well. I found the book ultimately disappointing. The characters were either fairly "stock" or minimally explored, and the story seemed to progress almost on automatic pilot. So predictable in places, and so "surface" in others. Some symbolism was almost ridiculous in its transparency. It seems to me that not a lot of effort was spent on this fairly formulaic novel. Some reviewers loved the character of Delia, but I found her kind of revolting, actually. Because I had some time to read over the holidays, I finished the book, but not with enormous pleasure. This is not one of Lurie's finest efforts.

This book is full of good information to help people take care of their backs. It gives the basic information about your back before explaining how to care for it and when to go see a real doctor. The information is consistent with the information given to me in "back school" by the physical therapists training us to take care of our backs. I have given and loaned the book to several friends. In every case, it seems to have helped. It is a good guide to improving the health of your back and finding the proper care when needed.

Strating of right 5 out of 5 stars.

An excellent book that should be "compulsory" reading for any person serious about archery. If I read the book when I started archery I would not have had to unlearn the many bad habits I learnt or have been taught over the past three years.

A clear and practical step by step guide to get any serious archer in shooting his best shot.

Finally a clear explanation of important back issues 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I have been operated on twice on my back, and I wish this book was available years ago. Back surgery is a complicated process and it is difficult for a patient to look at a MRI image that the doctor is looking at, and even with explanations from the doctor, to understand. This book clearly and simply explains all surgical options, the pro's and con's and the risks involved with each. It also describes the likley hood of side effects. It also has sample images from MRI's, CT scans and X rays to show you a picture of the problems, with clear labeling. The key , I think, is that it helps you better undersatnd your problem and to communicate intelligently with the surgeon about your condition. I recommend to anyone who may may considering surgery!

Editorial Review:

Dr. Jarolem's book explains in simple terms the complicated subject of spinal surgery. Various treatments are described as well as the risks and benefits of surgery. Over one hundred pictures are used to explain spinal anatomy and various spinal disorders. Case examples are also used to illustrate neck, upper and lower back problems, and their surgical treatment.

The BEST Bad Back Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was down for three weeks with back spasms in 1965 and was treated by a good friend, a highly respected orthopedic surgeon. Unfortunately, he did not understand the mechanics of the back and I got better in spite of his treatment. I later got good advice from a diagnostic orthopedic doctor, who did understand the mechanics of the back and instructed me on how to deal with it. A friend gave me a copy of this book and I was a total skeptic before reading it and trying the exercises. It works and I have given fifteen copies to others over the years. At age 72, it has helped me live the normal life I never expected. Thank you Jerry Wayne.

Former Back Pain Patient & Current Medical Scientist 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In adolescence, I experienced a pars defect at L4, which led in early adulthood to a spondylolisthesis with excruciating pain in my back, radiating into my buttocks and one leg. Fortunately, by this time I had been on the staff for several years of Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey California a major rehabilitation teaching hospital, and part of the University of Southern California School of Medicine. This is significant, because the first "problem back pain" treatment unit was established by Vert Mooney, M.D. at Rancho in the early 1970s. He has recently been awarded the Wiltse Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. This is significant because he and other orthopedic surgeons at the hospital were real medical scientists and objectively studied the results of available back surgery techniques, usually reporting a mixed bag of outcomes. When I hurt my back, I asked for some guidance and one of these physicians recommended Jerry Wayne's book, soon after it came out in 1983. I used it successfully myself and then began to recommend it to my own patients who were participating in "work hardening", a program that I developed at Rancho in the mid-1970s. Over the years, I have purchased and given away more than a dozen of these books, generally hearing back that the story was engaging and believable and the exercises were useful. Later in my career, I spent 10 years on the editorial board of the journal Spine and had the opportunity to peer review dozens of papers addressing symptom control and rehabilitation after low back injury. I've also had several of my own papers published in this and other scientific journals. The bottom line is that surgery should be avoided until the possible benefits of exercise have been exhausted. The only two scientifically supported approaches to exercise for the relief of low back pain of which I'm aware are the "work conditioning" approach developed by Tom Mayer and his colleagues at PRIDE, and the "mechanical low back pain" approach developed by Robin McKenzie of New Zealand. Although the approach described by Jerry Wayne in this book has not been scientifically studied, it is consistent with the philosophies of these other approaches and, at least on an anecdotal basis from reasonably sophisticated readers, quite effective. Until the United States gets away from the "piece rate" approach to medical care, many orthopedic specialist physicians and physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians are not going to take the time or effort to educate their patients (for which they do not get paid), but will either cut or inject as their primary solution to problem spinal pain. Jerry Wayne's book provides another alternative that, in my opinion, is worth considering.

Did the trick for me 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Everybody probably has different needs but this book absolutely did it for me. I had neck and upper back pain for 2 and a half years and it was so bad I took ibuprofen every single day for that period and was worried I was going to suffer long-term medication consequences. I saw two chiropractors and a top notch physical therapist, all of whom, combined, were only able to make a small difference in the management of the pain. I started doing the exercises in this book in August of 2004 and by September the pain was about 10% of what it used to be. It's now January 2005 and I have occassional flare-ups, most of which can be managed through a brief run-through of the exercises. After taking ibuprofen every day for 2 and half years straight, I am happy to report that in the past five months I have taken it about 5 or 6 times.

The exercises are pretty basic and very easy to do and I'm not sure they would help everybody but they sure helped me. I highly recommend this book. Even if it doesn't work for you, I think it's well worth $10 to find out.

Change the Way You Think About, Cope with, and Treat Lower Back and Neck Pain

If you suffer from chronic back pain, you’ve probably complained countless times about the "bad back" you think you have. But what if we told you otherwise, that you actually have a "miraculous back", an engineering marvel capable of dramatic feats of strength, flexibility, and support? If this sounds like news then you owe it to yourself to keep reading and discover the techniques that can free you from chronic back and neck pain forever.

The epidemic of debilitating back pain that 35 million Americans struggle with is a manifestation of the culture we live in: sedentary lifestyles, inadequate exercise, and a reluctance to challenge the failed therapies of the past. Instead, this book offers targeted massage techniques with a set of directed range-of-motion and stretching exercises that will bring relief to anyone suffering from persistent pain. This is your user’s guide to the human back: It explains the physiological function of this remarkable system of bones, joints, and connective tissue. Once you understand the system and learn why not to fear the pain, we’ll show you how to design a recovery program that is specific to your particular neck or back pain problem.

"A true back-owner’s manual. Required reading for anyone who has had back pain, has it now, or will have it." —Allen G. Zippin, MD, diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery

"Any book written to help people help themselves must contain technical details about how to do so—and this book is no exception. However, what distinguishes this book is that these gems are embedded in an account that personalizes Gerry Silverman to the reader. The stories of patients are presented with empathy and respect. The solutions to problems often enough originate in the application of some common sense plus some stretching and rubbing, so they are accessible to anyone. The book is easy, appropriate, convincingly honest, truly clinical—as well, I am sure, as an authoritative guide." —Harvey L. Lerner, MD, diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine

"Healing is a spiritual as well as a physical challenge. Gerry Silverman has helped the work of healing with this wonderful book." —Rabbi Marc Gellman, Ph.D., senior rabbi of Temple Beth Torah in Melville, NY

The last reviewer obviously had no idea what she was talking about. The book should be reviewed for its content and not on any printing errors.
This book is a must for all physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiatrists and any other practitioners that deal with musculoskeletal ailments. I've read this book several times and still find myself using it as a reference to understand functional anatomy.

Functional Anatomy 2 out of 5 stars.

The first 16 pages of this book which was listed as new were shortened at the top by an inch or so and were bound together. I had to pull them apart. I would have returned the book if I hadn't of needed it so soon.
