A well written informative guide 5 out of 5 stars.

I have had herpes for 11 years and I highly recommend this book to anybody that has herpes or has a partner that has herpes. It does a pretty good job of answering your questions. It covers both the medical and emotional issues of coping with herpes.

Awsome Resource 5 out of 5 stars.

As an STD Patient Advocate and as a person living with herpes, I have personally handed copies of this book to several people who have been diagnosed with herpes.

I believe that it provides a clear overview of the herpes virus, the risks, the treatment options, the preventative measures and so forth.

When a person is newly diagnosed, they can become overwhelmed with all the misleading information and even horrific photos they may find on the internet. This book is a means to minimize the confusion.

If you are looking for a resource that explains the virus fully, this is it! If you are looking for a book that explains how best to live with herpes, check out Dr. Ruth's new book -- Dr. Ruth's Guide to Talking About Herpes.

Two books that anyone with herpes won't want to be without!

"A great alternative resource for Herpes - very informative!!" 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is what all of the other herpes self-help books are not. It is also not what the other books are. The writing style is a bit technical but the content is understandable by non-medical people like me. It covers a discussion of many of the "alternative" treatment modalities strictly from the standpoint of how well they are or are not documented in scientific and medical literature. The author makes no claims about miraculous cures and generates no sales pitches, but he has gone to considerable effort to dig up some promising alternative treatments that are also effective for other conditions too. Some of the supplements and herbs have a lot of documentation supporting them and some have very little. Just the facts clearly laid out.

I know several individuals who are using BHT to suppress their herpes outbreaks with complete success and no apparent side effects. I wish I had read this book when my grandmother was suffering from her shingles. I highly recommend it!

Editorial Review:

This book discusses the major Natural and Alternative treatments for the Herpes Family viruses that have been documented in the Scientific and Medical Literature. It discusses several nutritional supplements and inexpensive over-the-counter medications that boost the immune system. It also discusses several foods, supplements and herbs that have anti-viral properties. The emphasis is on correlating potential natural and alternative therapies with relevant published research. Some have substantial supporting research and others very little. Get the documented facts, not unfounded claims.

Yep, I can cook 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Martin shares his experience as a research scientist using natural approaches in dealing with pain and relieving degenerative diseases. This is a unique approach that really works. I've successfully applied the pain formulation and topical applications are very powerful, but it also makes logical sence, at least in my mind. I would recommend the book!

Pain Relief for Pennies 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a nutritionist, and this quickly became one of the most important books in my library! I've used the recipes in the book to help friends and family members who are in pain, along with using it on myself, and it works *fabulously* well!!!

The problem with over-the-counter NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like aspirin, Naproxen (Aleve) and Ibuprofen (Advil) is that with regular use, they often cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcerations, and/or perforations (with or without pain). If you were able to apply the above NSAIDs topically, you could totally avoid that problem ... which is exactly what I did when I made the pain-relief recipes in this book ... for just pennies!!!

I often tell my clients that whethere it's their nutrition or diet, "one size does not fit all." The same holds true for pain relief. What's incredibly cool about this book is that there are a *number* of approaches/solutions/recipes that can be tried. So if one recipe doesn't work to your liking, either try a different one or try adjusting the ingredient amounts. As an example, I found I got better (faster) pain relief when I increased the amount of Naproxen in the recipe.

Analgesic (pain relief) formulas are only one part of what is covered in the book. There are also some excellent recipes for men (and WOMEN!) suffering from hair loss, cold sores, and genital herpes.

The book is only about 38 pages long, but don't let that fool you. At 30 bucks, it's a steal!!!

When you're making pain relief formulas for yourself, please consider making extra and passing it out to friends and family who suffer from chronic pain. I can think of no greater gift or act of humanity. And if you find value in this book, consider supporting the site and man responsible for writing the book ... Stephen Martin and [...]

Editorial Review:

Herpes simplex viruses are capable of causing a wide variety of infections, including genital herpes, which is so common a sexually transmitted disease that it affects one in five people in the United States. Understanding Herpes is an accessible sourcebook about the virus, its various strains, the ways in which it is transmitted, its symptoms, and the most effective treatments for fighting infection and aftereffects. The book also details how the virus can manifest itself in AIDS patients, pregnant women, and newborns, and discusses the emotional problems that can be caused by herpes infections.

Revised chapters provide:

* New information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of genital herpes

* New breakthroughs and discoveries in antiviral therapy

* New data about the connection between genital herpes and an increased risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV

* Additional steps people can take to reduce the spread of genital herpes between sexual partners

* New information about how drug treatments can reduce the likelihood of spreading the infection to sexual partners

* Updated information about the use of antiviral drugs during pregnancy

A chapter on vaccines includes new information about topical microbicides that may prove effective in preventing genital herpes in women. In plain, informative language this book is ideal for the patient and for loved ones.

Herpes A Nutritional Approach 3 out of 5 stars.
39 of 40 people found this review helpful.

Herpes A Nutritional Approach gives a good but short overview of the subject. In just 31 pages the reader receives a lot of summarized information. The reader looking for facts and definitions should be satisfied. However, the reader looking for more in-depth information would probably not be satisfied with this book alone.

The first part of the book briefly covers what herpes is, the types, the causes and how it develops. The section on herbs is more extensive and gives a good overview on which herbs, vitamins and minerals are recommended to boost the immune system and soothe the condition. This is the part of the book i found the most interesting.

The last section gives a very short case history and recipes. I was surprised however to read recipes using ingredients i had previously read should be avoided. In other books nuts, peas and brussels sprouts were said to be avoided or consumed with moderation. These contradictions were therefore rather confusing.

All by all, considering the price, the book does give a quick overview and covers the main aspects of a nutritional approach. I preferred Controlling Herpes Naturally by Michele Picozzi which covers the same subjects more fully and with a lot more detail.
