This book was very helpful, it helped me to spot a dozen previously unseen behaviors connected with adrenal fatigue. Even if you feel healthy you may be subjected to periods of gray humor, stress or just feel fatigued or sleepy for no apparent reason. This book is a manual to get back your energy, and ultimately your life.

Guess I've been fast to find this book. Those who suffer of adrenal fatigue can get seriously ill if they don't adjust their lifestyle to the need of their bodies, as stress can be accumulated during several years and then shut one off completely. Very often the source can be also external, not only physical or psychological, and this book covers a lot of different situations.

Another Great Look Inside the Medical Profession 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought Atul Gawande's last book, Complications, was one of the best books written on the medical profession in a long while. In it, Gawande showed a deep respect and sympathy for patients while trying to be clear about what would help the medical establishment do a better job from a doctor's point of view. In this book, he covers some of the same ground but, as his title implies, here he is focused specifically on what it takes to do things better as a doctor. The chapters here are grouped under three big heading which Gawande feels are the categories of improvement: diligence, doing right, and ingenuity. Within that, he tells some fascinating stories.

Under diligence, he describes how simple persistence can improve performance significantly. For example, simple compliance with washing hands before and after each interaction with a patient would reduce unnecessary infections greatly and yet it is one of the poorest areas of performance in many medical establishment. My wife had a baby a couple weeks ago at a well-respected New York City hospital (that shall remain nameless) and, having read this book, I couldn't help but watch the hand washing. Though there was hand-washing going on, my anecdotal results were somewhat disappointing. It's scary. And yet, his stories of the effort to send polio the way of smallpox and the amazing success rates of medical teams in Iraq through no more than basic diligence with well-established methods give readers hope.

Under doing right, Gawande tells stories of the continuing debate over what constitutes right and wrong in medicine. What is the proper way to interact with someone who you have to examine naked? When is it fair to sue a doctor and how much is it worth? What should a doctor be paid for their services? Should a doctor participate in executions at prisons, considering the methods we use now are basically medical? When should a doctor continue treatment at all costs or let a patient die? These are questions with no easy answers and Gawande takes a balanced approach.

Under ingenuity, he discusses some simple, clever ideas that have helped improve performance in various areas. His wonderful chapter on childbirth focuses on the Apgar score for newborns. As most know, this is a number ubiquitous now at the birth of a baby. It wasn't even developed by an OB/GYN. It was developed by an anaesthesiologist. It required no new medical techniques. It simply required doctors and nurses to do a directed assessment of a baby at birth. And yet, this simple, ingenious change, dropped child mortality rates significantly as babies previously thought to have no chance were given a chance and hospitals competed to "improve" their Apgar scores. In this section he also has a discussion on how true analysis of doctor and hospital performance is rare but, when used, greatly improves success as well as a discussion of the amazing cleverness of doctors in the poorest parts of the world to do procedures with limited equipment. It was incredibly eye-opening.

It is a fact of life that all of us will have to encounter the medical establishment from time to time. It can be incredibly frustrating. Still, it's nice to know that there are doctors like Gawande trying to understand things and make them better. In addition, he is a fine writer who has a wealth of interesting history and personal anecdotes that help make his ideas clear. Everyone should take some time and read his work.

For many years Millman's books have been among my favorites. This is a first in a Trilogy that includes Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior and The Journey of Socrates. Millman himself went though an incredible story, from injury back to Olympic athlete and from those events has created a series of books to help bring out the best in other people. Any of Millman's books are great tools for personal growth.

this book was amazing i loved a page of it i dont read a lot and for the frist time i couldnt put a book down some of the great points of the book is you should find answers from with in and not from other people many other amazing points a great book to get you wont be sorry getting it

Great book on surgery 4 out of 5 stars.

Atul Gawande gratefully takes the reader to the back of the OR, a place open for a few, yet intriguing for many. Dr. Gawande is extremely frank and poignant, as he describes actual cases from his own surgical practice. He admits that cutting someone open for the first time is hell, praises surgery which gives chance to obese people, wonders about doctor's intuition, and remains human in every case.

As always, Atul Gawande is not just writing about medicine; this book reaches far beyond the realm of the operating room. He touches on the most complicated ethical questions of medicine and society as a whole. Gawande speaks of mistakes and our imperfect judgment; tackling the questions of good doctors gone bad along with malpractice claims and punishments. He makes the case for autopsy as a means of learning. He admits that medical students must practice on cadavers or animals in order to cut people open; all ethical questions are answered by means of vivid examples.

For instance, in the 1980s the death rate from a particular surgery would be about 10%. When the new surgical treatment of heart pathology arose, surgeons started trying the novice. At that training period, the rate of children death from this particular intervention increased to 25% of cases. Sounds horrible? Yes, but after surgeons learned, the rate fell down to just a couple percent. Was it worth it? Sure, granted the number of lives saved in the long run. Never, granted now many kids died just due to surgeons' learning. Would any doctor let anyone practice on his own kid? Never. At the same time, learning is a necessary part of medical progress.

Those questions dominate the book; Gawande ponders at the patient's right to choose, reminds us that doctors are human and prone to mistakes, reveals mysteries of complications, which are usually open only during the M&M - Mortality and Morbidity Conference behind the closed door. Gawande is not afraid to open the doors. Moreover, he is confident that openness is the only way to reduce the complications.

I almost wanted to say the book is too idealistic, except it's written by a person whose profession is to think realistically. Great book!

The DietMinder is a deluxe food and exercise diary. It consists of 240 pages for up to three months of steady record-keeping. (Each day is a two-page spread.) It has a flexible spiral binding for ease in writing and comes in either dark green or salmon colors. At 6 X 8.5 inches the DietMinder is small enough to carry in most purses yet large enough to write in easily. The attractive leatherette cover and vinyl pocket-page (for holding recipes, workout schedules, etc.) are other features that make the DietMinder special.

The daily pages which make up the heart of the DietMinder provide plenty of space for keeping track of what and how much you eat, the nutritional counts, the time of day foods were eaten, and totals for the day. (Columns are provided to monitor up to seve n food counts including fat grams, calories, cholesterol, etc.) In addition, there is space for listing vitamins, supplements or dietary aids taken. Rounding out each daily record is the physical activity box where the time spent or amount of your activity can be listed, as well as the intensity level and calories burned.

In the front of the DietMinder are pages where you can list your goals and how you plan to achieve them. Here you can also list your "before" measurements so you can monitor your progress on the graphs and charts provided in the back of the book.

A featured section in the back of the DietMinder is "Favorite Foods Facts". This is extremely handy for creating a personal index of counts for the foods you eat most often. In other words, for recipes you use frequently, you can add up the counts for the ingredients one time, list them here (by portion), and avoid having to do these calculations again!
