Editorial Review:

The niche bestseller "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" begins with the shooting of a urologist and includes a World War II Battle. The book exposes the big lie about radical prostate surgery, is filled with cartoons and simple diagrams, and is written for the average layperson in easy-to-understand style. "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes Dr. Gary Onik, M.D., Cryosurgeon and Director of Surgical Imaging at Celebration Health Hospital, Celebration, Florida, who says: "I expect that within five years we will see the death of the radical prostatectomy as a treatment for prostate cancer." The author, Bradley Hennenfent, M.D., has seen five uncles suffer from prostate cancer and his book includes many uplifting stories about less harmful treatments than surgery. Dr. Hennenfent also explains the problem of lies, damn lies, and prostate cancer statistics. The adverse effects of surgery: impotence, sexual dysfunction, incontinence, and urethral strictures are explained in realistic fashion. "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes oncologist Dr. Robert Leibowitz of Compassionate Oncology Medical Group, who says: "If radical prostatectomies worked, the data would be there. The reason the data is not there is because radical prostatectomies don't work." Dr. Leibowitz adds: "No prospective randomized trial has ever found radical prostatectomy to be both necessary and effective." Urologist W. Reid Pitts, Jr., M.D., FACS, wrote an outstanding letter-to-the-editor of the "Journal of Urology" lambasting the radical prostatectomy. When interviewed for "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery," Dr. Pitts said: "Although I did the first ever nerve sparing radical prostatectomy at New York-Cornell Hospital, I've abandoned the radical prostatectomy for my prostate cancer patients. There is always a better treatment option." Dr. Hennenfent co-founded the Prostatitis Foundation (www.prostatitis.org). He also founded the Epididymitis Foundation (www.epididymitisfoundation.org), and the Acoustic Neuroma Foundation (www.acousticneuromafoundation.org). He previously published "The Prostatitis Syndromes." "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes urologist Ronald Wheeler, M.D. of the Prostatitis and Prostate Cancer Center, who says: "In my opinion, prostatitis resolution holds the key to the future of prostate cancer resolution." “Two randomized, controlled studies suggest that 95% or more of all prostate cancer surgery done to date, has failed to extend the life of the patient,” says Dr. Bradley Hennenfent M.D., the book’s author. “Surgery should no longer be presented or advertised as a cure-all for prostate cancer,” says Dr. Hennenfent. “My book is all about the options to harmful surgery. “Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery,” details the harm done by surgery, while explaining the pros and cons of watchful waiting, active noninvasive therapy, radiation seed implants, three-dimensional radiation therapy, herbal medications, cryosurgery, and hormone blockade. The website for the book is: www.SurvivingProstateCancerWithoutSurgery.org.

Insightful, is all i have to say about this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is as informative as it gets in terms of helping us men far as stamina in the bedroom goes. Nothing against Viagara or Cialas, but i think if you follow the guidelines in this book you will find that it is not necessary to take those pills. I haven't even read through half of this book and i'm quite impressed already. I highly recommend it for the guys who are in their mid 30's and up.

Wow...such a moving story! A great infertility resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I first saw Jenna on the Oprah Winfrey show. I immediately felt connected to her because of her struggle with infertility. I could totally understand her pain. She was the first person I had seen that I honestly felt I could relate to.

So when I saw that she had written a book about her story, I just had to buy it. This book is an amazing resource for infertility! It gives the full picture of what it's like to go through all the stages of infertility, from before "trying to conceive" all the way through many IVF attempts. Jenna has given the reader an inside glimpse into the life of an infertile.

The way she tells her story (along with her husband's two cents every so often) is so compelling. It really was hard to put down.

This book is not only a great resource to someone personally struggling with infertility but also to those who who know of someone else who is struggling with it.

After I finished the book I gave it to my mom so she could get a glimpse of what I was going through. And most importantly, so she could read the helpful hints Jenna talks about at the end of the book as to how to best support someone going through infertility. These suggestions are so dead on! I wish I would've given it to her years ago.

Overall, I just can't recommend this book enough!

Editorial Review:

Her stunning bestsellers Passages and New Passages brilliantly mapped the changes we live through from youth to maturity. Now Gail Sheehy guides contemporary men through the turbulent challenges and surprising pleasures that begin at forty. As a man crosses that threshold, he is bound to ask midlife's most troubling question: Now what? Work anxieties, concerns over sexual potency, marital and family stress, issues of power, all take on new urgency as men contemplate the decades ahead. But as Gail Sheehy reveals in this major new book, midlife is precisely the period when men are most likely to reinvent themselves and become masters of their fate. In Understanding Men's Passages, Sheehy offers all men--and the women in their lives--an essential guide to self-discovery.

Hundreds of bold, imaginative men--celebrities as well as everyday heroes--share here their most intimate desires, deepest fears, and most fervent cravings for renewal. Decade by decade, Sheehy uncovers the real issues facing men today: finding new passion and purpose to invigorate the second half of their lives, dealing with "manopause," surviving job change, enjoying post-nesting zest, defeating depression, and learning what keeps a man young.

Informative and inspiring, grounded in fact and full of fascinating life stories, Understanding Men's Passages is a landmark that will take its place beside Gail Sheehy's epoch-making Passages and New Passages.

Read this book as a couple before prostate cancer surgery! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My husband is a physician and I am a marriage and family therapist. This book covers, in a reader friendly manner, the proverbial psycho social medical waterfront concerning erectile dysfunction. The most important message is that about penile rehabilitation, ( to be done with doctor's approval ) to be practiced quite soon after recovery from surgery. Published in 2004, it has all the up to date information on both drug and other therapies. In our opinion, this book should be in the hands of every person considering prostate cancer surgery, so that they will be informed about what they need to do after follow up.

Editorial Review:

Erectile dysfunction is a frequent consequence of prostate cancer and other prostate disease treatments. Though unwelcome and embarrassing, it doesn't have to end a couple's sex life. Both informative and practical, Intimacy with Impotence gives couples cause for hope. It discusses impotence in lay terms, provides information on the commercial therapies and medications both available and being researched now, and gives practical advice about lovemaking-from getting in the mood to commonsense suggestions to erection-less satisfaction. Written with complete honesty and compassion by a prostate cancer survivor and his wife, this is the essential resource for couples trying to reestablish intimacy and sex in the face of impotence.

Attune to Your Body's Wisdom 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was searching for holistic methods of contraception and thankfully discovered this book.
The author's tone was inviting and engaging: the words and images were clear, accessible and deeply informed. The text was constantly accompanied by illustrations that varied from relevant technical descriptions, to decorative or humourous images, making it an pleasurable read as well as an informative one. The book is aimed at both avoiding and attaining pregnancy so that even if like myself, the reader has an exclusive emphasis on avoiding pregnancy, she will be better informed if she does decide to have children in future. The book also offers useful ways of relating to your partner should any challenges come up in your sex life which I found practical and necessary given how much misunderstanding can happen in sexual matters between men and women.

Editorial Review:

Presented in question-and-answer format, one of the most straightforward self-help books on fertility aims to help couples achieve or prevent pregnancy without using contraceptives. It advocates not the outdated rhythm method, but quick, daily examinations of cervical mucus and body temperature to ascertain when the few days of fertility occur. Winstein also covers the practical aspects of sexual abstinence during the fertile period, breastfeeding's role in fertility, returning to normal cycles after using the pill, and how ovulation occurs. Assuming normal fertility, she yet includes an explanatory, alphabetical list of infertility problems. An accurate, lovingly illustrated handbook that does much to dispel the mystery and imagined difficulty centered around birth control. Further information, readings list, references, glossary, index.
