Editorial Review:

Coping With Erectile Dysfunction was awarded the best consumer book of 2006 by the Society for Sex Therapy and Research.

Continuing the momentum of their revolutionary book, Coping with Premature Ejaculation, Michael Metz and Barry McCarthy, two of the nation's most respected sex therapists, bring you the only complete self-help resource on the market for men dealing with erectile dysfunction. Not only is this book the first to address this problem using the most current research into male sexuality, but it is the first to propose a treatment approach that unites medical, psychological, and relationship-enhancing techniques into a cooperative process that couples can work through together.

The book begins with an uncomplicated explanation of ED and a discussion of the mythologies that surround much of male sexuality. After describing the integrated treatment approach, the book helps men develop a set of realistic sexual expectations for each phase of their lives and explores the role of their partners in resolving ED problems. Exercises help men assess the nature of their problems. The results of the assessments lead readers to explore medical, psychological, and couples-related interventions. The book closes with a detailed program for relapse prevention. Ultimately, the Metz-McCarthy approach encourages couples to explore their own sexual intimacy as a means of overcoming the problem.

All You Need 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

All you need is in this book; eliminate unneccesary workouts that are not good mass builders and abandon high volume marathon sessions that are ruinous to your joints and free time. This is unlike anything you've ever read. An intellectual approach that explains WHY a high intensity routine is effective. I love it.

Editorial Review:

The definitive guide for building muscle: Training for Mass is a comprehensive, intelligent guide for constructing effective and efficient weight training workouts. It also offers a scientific analysis of current popular weight training strategies, and demonstrates how the vast majority of workout routines are neither scientific nor effective. Based on observations about how the human body responds to exercise, Training for Mass advocates a less-is-more approach, and shows how spending endless hours in the gym is counterproductive and even harmful--debunking the myth that building muscle requires a great investment of time. Training for Mass is not a picture book; rather, it is filled with useful information. Nor is it a rigid scientific journal or text book; the author draws upon unusual examples and provides uncommon insight into the factors required for success in weight training.

Difficult to finish 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 13 people found this review helpful.

As someone who has suffered many years from PE, I was hoping to find some useful advice from this book. The first chapter, which I have read many times, is sensational. As I have not yet been able to finish this book, I am hoping that the next edition is better paced.

Has She Written A Baseball Book? 1 out of 5 stars.

I was disappointed. I finished the book during the second chapter.

Working so far!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I hate to read, but this was a quick and very helpful read. The information was useful and the techniques are working very well after a few weeks of practice. This was recommended by my doctor and I'll pass that recommendation along. Good luck.

Actionable Manual 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In the past, doctors attempted to define Premature Ejaculation (PE) in terms of how quickly the patient ejaculates. Some treatment centers believed that if a man lasted less than one minute after vaginal entry he was premature. Other groups used one and a half minutes or two minutes as their criterion. Instead of the natural enjoy, men with this type of PE have to struggle to hold back, and can only do so with tremendous effort and with a great deal of tension, which takes all the pleasure out of the act for themselves and also spoils it for their partners. In 1980s, Helen Singer Kaplan has proposed a new definition of PE, which has been adopted by the American Psychiatric Association and by the World Health Organization. According to the new diagnostic guidelines, the essential feature of PE is that the man lacks adequate voluntary ejaculatory control with the result that the climaxes involuntarily before he wishes to.

The author affirms that PE can be cured, so today over 90 percent of cased can be cured with an average of 14 weeks of treatment. The author analyzes what causes PE, scrutinizes physical and psychological causes of PE, and present the new treatment of PE split into steps with illustrated exercises and advises for both partners. The illustrations are taken from the other author's book: "The Illustrated Manual Of Sex Therapy". I can recommend it in addition to this book, as well as the author's title "The Sexual Desire Disorders - Dysfunctional Regulation of Sexual Motivation".

Editorial Review:

Discusses male sexual response and the cause of its disorders, and provides advice on leading a more normal sex life.

Death of the Author 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I'd wait until someone lets the public know what Larry Clapp died of before buying this book.

THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT LARRY CLAPP DIED FROM PROSTATE CANCER ABOUT SEVEN WEEKS AGO AND THAT HIS FAMILY DOES NOT WANT THE CAUSE OF DEATH KNOWN BECAUSE IT WILL KILL BOOK SALES.

Larry's death 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

To the person who believes that Larry's regimen does not work if Larry died of prostate cancer: While those of us who consulted with or even met Larry in person wish that those closest to him would reveal the cause of his death, we do not think his regimen is a failure if he DID die of prostate cancer. After all, he kept himself in robust health for a very long time, in contrast to lots of men who perhaps prematurely had surgery. Furthermore, he was in his LATE 70s! He had 17 great years after his diagnosis!

Notice that whenever you ask a guy how he is doing after surgery, he'll say he's fine. Probe deeper, though, and he will reveal he is not fine. Unless the cancer is aggressive, there's no need to run into the operating room. The two biggest lessons in the book are: 1. Detoxify a few times per year, and 2. Use power doppler ultrasound as your monitoring method, not a biopsy. Dr. Robert Bard in NYC is the man to go to, and your insurance will probably cover it. Blue Cross Federal Plan, for example, covers it.

P.S. Great new lab test with fewer false positives than PSA may even be out right now--the EPCA-2 by Onconome Inc. Google Direct Labs--you may be able to get it done without a doctor's involvement, even.

Best wishes to all you men with prostate problems. It takes guts and energy to look at non-surgical options. Do what you can!

Jayne

Editorial Review:

Larry Clapp discovered he had prostate cancer in 1990, and delved into self-healing alternatives to surgery and radiation, and developed a cure for prostrate cancer that he used successfully on himself. This book employs nutrition, massage, herbs, homeopathy and other medical alternatives that can not only cure you but enhance your sex life, and your physical and mental strength.

Editorial Review:

EAT LIKE A MAN TO LOOK LIKE A MAN

For years now, the so-called experts have told you to avoid the foods you love. That you're supposed to ditch the weight room and jog your way to maximum fitness. And that testosterone -- the hormone that makes you a man -- is actually a problem for you, rather than the solution to your problems. In the meantime, American men have kept getting fatter and more frustrated. Which is why we've looked into all this, and from what we've learned, we can tell you -- the know-it-alls are know-nothings.

The Testosterone Advantage Plan is about realizing your full potential as a man, and will

  • show you how nature intended you to eat.

  • explain how the male body differs in its nutritional needs from the female body -- especially when it comes to the proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are not bad for you.

  • give you a superior workout regimen to help you attain the muscular physique you've always wanted.

  • explain how you can boost your testosterone and energy levels naturally, without supplements or quick-fix fads.

  • help you tick off the long list of benefits you'll likely reap in terms of energy and enthusiasm, power and potency, confidence and charisma.

This much you know: What you've done in the past hasn't worked. Why not try it our way? You have everything to gain -- and nothing to lose except your gut.

Starts out great, then doesn't measure up. 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I found that this book, although promising a fresh look at the age old problems of adult children of abuse, falls short in the long run. Adults who experienced abuse as children are usually well aware of that abuse. This book deals with uncovering the abuse, and then takes, in my opinion, controversial steps at therapy. Those steps include a "reconstruction of the past" in essence fabricating lies and letting those lies replace the truths of the abuse. I, for one, was looking for a way to defeat the anger I feel, not reconstruct my past into some idyllic existence. For me, living a lie where I remember parents who never existed would only be compounding the problem.
So, I cannot recommend this book as part of an affective regimen of therapy.

Editorial Review:

A history of a childhood abuse is not a life sentence. Here is hope, healing, and a chance to recover the self lost in childhood. Drawing on his extensive work with Adult Children, and on his own experience as a survivor of emotional neglect, therapist Steven Farmer demonstrates that through exercises and journal work, his program can help lead you through grieving your lost childhood, to become your own parent, and integrate the healing aspects of spiritual, physical, and emotional recovery into your adult life.

Editorial Review:

The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health assembles into a single volume a quarter-century's worth of hard-won knowledge about men's health -- knowledge that men need to lead longer, healthier lives.

More than twenty-five years ago, researchers at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health began what have become the largest aggregate studies ever of men's health. Tracking 96,000 American men over decades, these studies provide the ultimate resource on what keeps men healthy -- and what doesn't. The result is The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health:

• Features the most current information on the health-preserving functions of diet, exercise, and over-the-counter drugs and supplements

• Gives straight answers to questions like when drinking alcohol is beneficial and when it's not

• Offers advice on behavior modification and stress control• Includes all the crucial information on diseases that are particularly important to men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, erectile dysfunction, and kidney and bladder problems

• Provides an easy-to-navigate guide to the health-care system that gives balanced views on the benefits and drawbacks of common medical tests

With the authority that only the world's largest and best-known medical school can provide, and the lively, clear presentation that is the hallmark of Harvard Men's Health Watch, the monthly newsletter edited by Dr. Simon, The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health is an essential reference for every man -- and for everyone who cares about a man's health.

Dated Material 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book reads like a bad psych textbook from the 60's & 70's; because thats basically what it is. There are some masculine universal truths but you really have to search for them. The case studies & occupations are dated & irrelivent to baby boomers in the 21st century and not very helpful IMHO. Still there are a few pearls and saving graces but you really have to work hard to read this one.

Too dated to be of much use 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 18 people found this review helpful.

A nice try at defining life stages but this book misses the mark. It's too culture-bound to be of much use to anyone other than white middle-class American baby boomers. If you are one of those - as I am - you may recognise yourself in this book up to a point, but I doubt you will learn much that's new. As other reviewers have pointed out, it would have been a groundbreaking book in the 1970's, but these days you'll find similar information and analysis in the lifestyle pages of most Sunday papers.

Editorial Review:

The first full report from the team that discovered the patterns of adult development, this breakthrough study ranks in significance with the original works of Kinsey and Erikson, exploring and explaining the specific periods of personal development through which all human begins must pass--and which together form a common pattern underlying all human lives.
"A pioneering and radical theory of adult development."

this is an excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I found out about this book from my pastor. He said it would help and it did. The book offers a map of grief. It shows what it is, the path it takes, what makes it worse or better and importantly what we do to get through it. I needed a map and I got it.

The best thing about this book was that it affirmed the actions that I have been taking after the death and showed me, as a man, how that was actually a way of healing. This book is a breath of fresh air compared to the more feminine you gotta "talk and cry" kinds of books. I had been getting pressure from my wife and others about not dealing with things. This book has helped me explain to them that I am indeed dealing with things but in my own way. This would be a great book for women to help them understand the men they love.

Don't be confused by all of the references to "This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title." The second edition on this page IS the same as the first edition PLUS an extra section. All of the comments on this page refer to both editions. I was confused about this and checked with the publisher before buying.

Editorial Review:

This is a book for men and women about the masculine side of healing from loss. It helps readers discover: new and powerful ways to heal; how the genders differ in their healing; greater understanding between partners; examples of successful and uniqueness; new ways to understand your grief; and, ways the individual's loss can impact the entire family. The book is meant to be a map and a guide through the experience of loss. It will help you move through the pain of loss and into a place of healing and transformation.
