Editorial Review:

If you've ever been dumped, duped, or three minutes from crazy, you'll love Crazy Aunt Purl. Side-splittingly funny and profoundly moving, Drunk, Divorced, and Covered in Cat Hair is the true-life misadventures of Laurie Perry, aka Crazy Aunt Purl, a slightly neurotic, displaced Southerner trying to create a new life after her husband leaves her to 'get his creativity back.' (Whatever that means.) But will she get her groove back in a tiny rented apartment, with a mountain of boxes, visible panty lines, and a slight wine-and-Cheetos problem?

"I was a thirty-something woman living alone with four cats. I was probably going to be divorced. I was on the short bus to crazy. I pictured my grandmother making hoop-skirted yarn cozies for the toilet paper. I pictured myself making doilies for furniture that I did not own. I saw my cats wearing knitted hats with lace appliqués. From my vantage point, knitting seemed like 100 percent of some road I did not want to walk down."

Yet, surprisingly, it's knitting that saves her and emboldens her to become fully engaged in life again--to discover new friends; to take risks, however scary; and to navigate the ins and outs of the modern dating scene.

"Dating has changed in a decade. Now there is a higher chance of meeting someone who has an internet porn addiction than someone who has a job. In Los Angeles, your dinner companion might have served time in Pelican Bay or run a meth lab. Or, worst of all, he might spend all night talking about his agent, his craft, and what it means to grow as an actor. Then he'll ask you to read his screenplay."

And such is life in this quirky, irreverent memoir, a spin-off of the blog phenomenon, www.crazyauntpurl.com, one of the most successful online diaries in history, exploding to an international fan base of enthusiastic readers. But don't worry, you don't have to knit to love Aunt Purl. You just have to know what it feels like to have loved, to have lost, or to have taken a leap of faith. We've all been there: Pass the wine.

Editorial Review:

According to Geoffrey Redmond, M.D., a majority of the 42 million American women between the ages of thirty-five and fifty-five suffer from vulnerability to their own hormones. Appearance, emotions -- and even sex drive -- may be affected. Symptoms include thinning hair, persistent acne, mood swings, low energy, loss of pleasure in sex, weight gain, irregular periods, and pain. While the media has emphasized the problems of menopause, Dr. Redmond explains that all too many women experience hormonal miseries even in their thirties. Lab tests are often normal because the problem is not the hormones themselves but how a woman's body reacts to them. Healthy, active women suddenly find that once quiescent hormones have taken over control of their lives. Because their problems are often dismissed as trivial, women who are hormonally vulnerable are frequently thwarted in their quest for help. Too often they are brushed off with remarks such as, "Your tests are normal; there's nothing wrong with you." This is tragic because, as Dr. Redmond demonstrates, hormonal balance can nearly always be restored with the treatments he details, which include individualized use of prescription medications, herbal supplements, lifestyle changes, and even spiritual practices. Many women have heard that testosterone can help sex drive, but most have not been warned about the damage that careless testosterone therapy can cause on skin and hair.

In this book, Dr. Redmond, an internationally recognized authority on testosterone in women, explains the only safe ways to use testosterone. With informative sidebars, quizzes, and personal stories of women who have overcome hormone vulnerability, this helpful book will empower you to find treatments for your hormone problems that are tailored to fit your own body, biochemistry, symptoms, and lifestyle.

Editorial Review:

Today, approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer—and many will be under the age of fifty. There are currently more than 250,000 breast cancer survivors in the United States who are just forty-five years old or younger. They are daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, and friends, whose illness and subsequent treatment affect entire families and communities. And they face issues wholly unique to their age group.

A collaborative effort by six young breast cancer survivors, Just a Lump in the Road … shares the kind of candid information, insight, and inspiration that only girlfriends who have “been there” can deliver. Each story is as diverse as the women themselves, and modesty is hurled aside as they discuss dating and mastectomies, children and mortality, and treatment and hair loss. Together with the doctors and healthcare professionals who continue to care for them, the women also provide an overview of the many types of breast cancer treatments now available.

Giving a much-needed voice to the young survivor, Just a Lump in the Road … offers validation, comfort, and encouragement for not only the thousands of young women battling breast cancer, but also their spouses, bosses, children, babysitters, friends, boyfriends, and significant others yet to come.

Bald Child 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Anya, a fourth-grader, has a rare but not very serious medical condition that causes all of her hair to fall out. She doesn't want anyone to know, so after Christmas she returns to school wearing a wig that was designed to look exactly like her hair used to look. Anya is terrified at the thought that someone will find out she is bald.

Keely is an insecure girl in Anya's class. She hangs around with Stef, the most popular girl in their class, and she usually does whatever Stef wants her to do. Stef has noticed something funny about Anya's hair and suspects that she is wearing a wig. She wants Keely to tug on it to find out for sure, and to find out what is wrong with her. Keely is convinced that Anya must have cancer or some other awful disease, and she doesn't want to make things any worse for the girl. For the first time she can remember, Keely doesn't do exactly what Stef wants.

But somehow everyone finds out anyway, and Anya is mortified that her secret is out. Is there anything Keely can do to make her feel better?

I liked that Anya had a condition that wasn't potentially fatal; it caused disigurement but no pain and no death. This kept the focus on her humiliation and helplessness instead of putting the focus on a fight to survive.

Editorial Review:

Ten-year-old girls don't wear wigs.

So why is Anya wearing one? That's what Keely wants to know. But when Anya's wig falls off in front of the whole class, Keely realizes what she really wants is to help Anya, even though she's not sure how -- and even though it means she'll have to do something she's afraid of: stand up to her friends.

As for Anya, she just wants her hair to grow back, but no one can tell her whether it ever will. How can she learn to accept her disease when she can't even look in the mirror?

If you're a woman who is in a panic after recently discovering hair loss (thinning or baldness), this is the book for you. It gives a good, basic overview of medical and alternative therapies and hair care, grooming, and cosmetic issues. Also, it suggests how to talk to your doctor about hair loss and what questions, tests, and physical examinations your doctor should respond with. This books helps with the fear and frustration of female hair loss. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Today in America, there are 20 million women suffering from hair loss -- a devastating problem that most certainly and often unnecessarily affects a woman's self-image. Whether the loss is due to stress, hormonal imbalance, illness, chemotherapy, or medical side effects, hair loss can be prevented.

Waste of Money 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a big Cathy Howse fan, and have used her products for years. However, I have to give this book one star. The first half lists the dangers of relaxing your hair, with a few pages in between that describe how to make the transition to natural hair. The other half of the book is comprised of Q&A, but she only provides answers for 2/3 of the questions! She could have taken the few pages of "useful" information from the book and listed them on her website instead, there was no need to print this book. I would highly recommend her second book and her products, but skip this one. I am returning mine this week.

Editorial Review:

This book defines a unique problem to black women who use chemical relaxers and are losing their hair as a result of them. It identifies why this problem is happening and provides guidelines to help prevent it from occuring. It offers instruction on how to transition from chemical relaxers without cutting off the hair but by growing it out with minimal hair breakage. It discusses care and straightening of natural hair without using pressing combs. It is a must have instruction for every Black woman who wants to take control of her hair.
