Useful recipes, fun book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm amazed that these ancient formulas are so useful and work so well even today. Maybe it's because they have been used for so many generations. The ancient stories and backgrounds behind these formulas are very interesting, e.g., how some recipes were used by Emperor Guangxu and Empress Cixi. I recommended some hair rinse formulas to my friends and they really liked those recipes! Those mouthwash recipes are very helpful too. The recipes are easy to follow, with detailed ingredients, amounts, and preparation methods described. The explanations in Chinese medicine and scientific research are easy to understand. The book gives detailed references that are very convincing. It's a good resource about traditional Chinese culture too, such as those aromatics bags that were very popular in ancient China. It's almost unbelievable that ancient Chinese had developed so many comprehensive methods for beauty.

Editorial Review:

This book collects 100 ancient Chinese herbal formulas containing more than 140 herbs for natural beauty. These include imperial formulas used by emperors and empresses in ancient China, and secret time-tested formulas handed down in generations. Each formula is explained with both Chinese medicine and available scientific studies. Formulas for pampering every part of the body are included, such as herbal shampoos, facial cleansers, moisturizers, lip balms, mouth rinses, deodorants and bath soaps, and herbal formulas for weight loss. Various skin and cosmetic problems are addressed, including hair loss, dandruff, wrinkles, freckles, acne, red and puffy eyes, cracked lips, cold sores, red nose syndrome, breath and body odors, frostbite and chilblains, and obesity.

Editorial Review:

Alopecia areata is an unpredictable disorder that affects more than two and a half million men, women, and children in the United States and Canada. Causing patchy hair loss on the scalp and sometimes elsewhere on the body, this mysterious, noncontagious condition can be treated but it cannot yet be cured. Alopecia Areata: Understanding and Coping with Hair Loss is a sensitive yet straightforward guide to the diagnosis and treatment of this poorly understood disease. With great compassion, the authors explain how hair loss can profoundly affect a person's quality of life. They discuss what it means to be diagnosed with alopecia areata, and provide medically reliable information on the latest research, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Thompson and Shapiro also offer practical strategies for living with alopecia areata, which can go in and out of remission without any apparent reason. They discuss the physical and psychological adjustments to wearing a hairpiece and give pointers on selecting, securing, and maintaining a wig, whether human hair or synthetic, custom or ready-made. Alopecia Areata includes a chapter devoted to the special needs of children with this condition and concludes with an epilogue that tells the story of a day in the life of a woman with alopecia areata, illustrating the various challenges she faces and the strategies she uses to cope with these challenges.

How I stopped hair loss 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This is not an actual review, because I haven't read the book. I just wanted to share a hair loss recipe with you good people - the one that helped me.

I am a woman, 32 years old. I have had my hair falling out at above average rate since puberty. For a woman, a number of hairs falling out shouldn't be more than 70 per day. I would say that for me it was probably around 200. I was used to seeing bunches of hairs in the sink after washing it, on the pillow, on clothes. Then, few months ago, few factors (hairdresser made a horrible mistake, I made serious changes in my diet and was under a lot of stress) added up and for the next three months I was losing hair at the rate 500 (very roughly - I didn't actually count, but every time I ran fingers through my hair, I would have hairs in my hand). I thought I would end up bald. Then, I found a recipe on the Internet (bless it), and after using it every day, I can testify that it really works! Within the first month, the hair loss returned to normal (what was normal for me - maybe 200 hairs a day), and within the second month, my hair loss became less than average - I would say less than 50 hairs a day! The sink is almost empty after washing hair. I actually solved the problem I have been having my whole adult life.

The recipe:
1 1/2 cup of nettle
1/2 cup chopped onion
Put in a container, add enough alcohol to cover. After a few days (or more), strain and use liquid to massage scalp once a day.

About what it's like to live with alopecia 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The Girl With No Hair by Elizabeth Murphy-Melas is a flat-spined children's picture book about the common condition of alopecia areata, an autoimmune skin disease in which the body's own defenses attack the hair follicles and cause hair loss. People with alopecia are often healthy in every other respect, but children with the disease are often struck with an emotional burden in a phase of life when developing self-esteem is crucial. Bright color pictures by Alex Hernadix enhance the straightforward, understanding text which teaches young readers about what it's like to live with alopecia, and the joy of having a rewarding life with or without hair.

Editorial Review:

Kelly looks back at her years of learning to live with alopecia areata, a disease which causes hair loss. This light-hearted story follows her from diagnosis as a small child, to coping with the social and emotional implications of her condition, to gaining the understanding and acceptance of her peers and teachers.

Yep, I can cook 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Martin shares his experience as a research scientist using natural approaches in dealing with pain and relieving degenerative diseases. This is a unique approach that really works. I've successfully applied the pain formulation and topical applications are very powerful, but it also makes logical sence, at least in my mind. I would recommend the book!

Pain Relief for Pennies 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm a nutritionist, and this quickly became one of the most important books in my library! I've used the recipes in the book to help friends and family members who are in pain, along with using it on myself, and it works *fabulously* well!!!

The problem with over-the-counter NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like aspirin, Naproxen (Aleve) and Ibuprofen (Advil) is that with regular use, they often cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcerations, and/or perforations (with or without pain). If you were able to apply the above NSAIDs topically, you could totally avoid that problem ... which is exactly what I did when I made the pain-relief recipes in this book ... for just pennies!!!

I often tell my clients that whethere it's their nutrition or diet, "one size does not fit all." The same holds true for pain relief. What's incredibly cool about this book is that there are a *number* of approaches/solutions/recipes that can be tried. So if one recipe doesn't work to your liking, either try a different one or try adjusting the ingredient amounts. As an example, I found I got better (faster) pain relief when I increased the amount of Naproxen in the recipe.

Analgesic (pain relief) formulas are only one part of what is covered in the book. There are also some excellent recipes for men (and WOMEN!) suffering from hair loss, cold sores, and genital herpes.

The book is only about 38 pages long, but don't let that fool you. At 30 bucks, it's a steal!!!

When you're making pain relief formulas for yourself, please consider making extra and passing it out to friends and family who suffer from chronic pain. I can think of no greater gift or act of humanity. And if you find value in this book, consider supporting the site and man responsible for writing the book ... Stephen Martin and [...]

Excellent Book - A Real Lifesaver! 5 out of 5 stars.
47 of 50 people found this review helpful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. This book has given me hope after months of heartache and frustration. My doctors have not helped me at all, it seems like all they know about is Rogaine and nothing else.

I now have the knowledge I need to seek out alternative and new treatments that have never been mentioned to me before.

Not only do I recommend that every woman reads this book, but every doctor treating women for hair loss should read it too, you may just learn something!

Somewhat helpful 3 out of 5 stars.
45 of 46 people found this review helpful.

Although I liked this book, I already knew most of the information that it contained. I was somewhat disappointed that the book did not have many specific recommendations for hair loss products, i.e.: dosages, amounts, application procedures. The book also spent way too much time discussing hair transplants which are not an alternative for most women due to diffuse hair loss and unstable donor sites. The book gives far too few doctor recommendation and once again, the doctors recommended were mostly hair transplant specialist. If you are a beginner to female hair loss, you will probably find this book helpful as it does contain good basic information. I, myself, was disappointed.

A Must Read 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Bald as a Bean: The Experience of Sudden Hair Loss is at the top of my must read list. The author, Nancy Parsons, draws the reader into a world turned upside down when she is diagnosed with the disease, alopecia areata totalis universalis. (total hair loss over the entire body)

Nancy shares her intensive and sometimes agonizing physical and spiritual struggle when faced with this disease. From the initial shock of finding large clumps of hair on the shower floor, to the overwhelming diagnosis, Nancy chronicles the medical and holistic treatments, as well as the emotional and physical obstacles that she fights to overcome.

By revealing her most intimate thoughts, Nancy eloquently affirms the statement,
"Although alopecia areata is not life threatening, it is most certainly life altering."
We become aware of how much society values hair, and when one loses it, the emotional loss is as significant as the physical loss.

One notable theme throughout the book is that of our natural world, particularly the change of seasons. Loss and rebirth in nature entwines itself with Nancy's physical and spiritual being, and with that comes inspirational hope.

How others react to Nancy's hair loss shapes her internal struggle. Not only do her present interactions with others affect her, but her childhood experiences with her hair are discussed. Through comical reflections we see how the importance of hair is instilled in all of us at a very young age. Nancy's humor is an important defense against this disease. We see this humor when she talks about her wigs affectionately known as "the girls."

A disturbing statistic about alopecia areata is revealed. One study indicated that "forty eight percent of alopecians had considered suicide." By sharing such a personal struggle, Nancy shows us that through perseverance and self reflection, one can find the strength to live with the disease. The journey of shock, denial, fear, anger, and depression, is a journey worth taking.

Not only do I recommend Bald as a Bean, The Experience of Sudden Hair Loss to those suffering from alopecia or hair loss due to a treatment such as chemotherapy, but as well, to those who enjoy reading true stories about the triumph of the human spirit.

Editorial Review:

In a society that equates youth, health and even sexual attractiveness with luxurious manes of hair, a woman who goes suddenly bald faces a nightmare of emotions: grief, loss, horror, humilation and fear. In Bald As A Bean, the author, diagnosed with alopecia areata totalis universalis (total hair loss over the entire body), learns to cope with her baldness and shares her story with calm vision and touches humor.
