Read this book as a couple before prostate cancer surgery! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My husband is a physician and I am a marriage and family therapist. This book covers, in a reader friendly manner, the proverbial psycho social medical waterfront concerning erectile dysfunction. The most important message is that about penile rehabilitation, ( to be done with doctor's approval ) to be practiced quite soon after recovery from surgery. Published in 2004, it has all the up to date information on both drug and other therapies. In our opinion, this book should be in the hands of every person considering prostate cancer surgery, so that they will be informed about what they need to do after follow up.

Editorial Review:

Erectile dysfunction is a frequent consequence of prostate cancer and other prostate disease treatments. Though unwelcome and embarrassing, it doesn't have to end a couple's sex life. Both informative and practical, Intimacy with Impotence gives couples cause for hope. It discusses impotence in lay terms, provides information on the commercial therapies and medications both available and being researched now, and gives practical advice about lovemaking-from getting in the mood to commonsense suggestions to erection-less satisfaction. Written with complete honesty and compassion by a prostate cancer survivor and his wife, this is the essential resource for couples trying to reestablish intimacy and sex in the face of impotence.

A helpful book, Prostate a guide for men, Fred Felkins husband of Joan Felkins 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book was refered to me when I was told that I told that I had Prostate cancer by a doctor. The doctor informed me that most men do not understand what the prostate does and how it operates. I read the book and achieved a better understanding of what I was facing. My wife did not read the entire book but did read certain parts and used this to support me in this time. I would recommend that every man over 50 beg, borrow or buy this book, read it, study it and visit with their doctor and get a yearly check up. I am a five year survial of Prostate cancer and every 6 months when the doctor tells me that it is still in remission I rejoice.

Editorial Review:

Including storie about the experiences of individual patients and their families, this comprehensive guide reveals the causes of and cures for inflamation of the prostate, the latest treatments--with illustrations--for prostate cancer and how to decide which to use, what to expect before and after surgery, new tests for benign prostate enlargement and urinary problems, and more.

Editorial Review:

Three days after terrorists slammed airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, David Horowitz, as disoriented as the rest of us by these cataclysmic events, discovered that he had prostate cancer. As America declared war on terror, Horowitz began treatment, emerging months later with a "reprieve" from his disease. He brought back with him this remarkable book of hard-won insights about our country and ourselves--how we get to our ends and what we learn along the way.

An at times heart-catching departure from the polemics and social criticism that have made Horowitz one of our most controversial public intellectuals, THE END OF TIME is a lyrical meditation on subjects ranging from what parents inadvertently teach us in their deaths, to the forbidding realities of the cancer ward, to the way in which figures like Mohammed Atta use death as a strategy in becoming gods of their own mad creation. Hovering protectively over these ruminations is Horowitz's wife, April, whose stubborn love reached into the heart of his medical darkness and led him back toward the light of this work.

If THE END OF TIME is about how the commitments we make in this life steer us toward our fate, it is also about the redemptive power of language and literature. One of the writers who helped Horowitz make sense of what had happened to him and what was happening around him was the 17th century Catholic philosopher and scientist Blaise Pascal, whose PENSEES functions here as a model and guide. THE END OF TIME resembles the PENSEES in its striking combination of sense and sensibility, and in the way that its unflinching search for the truth is elevated by one stunning epiphany after another. Citing Pascal's famous observation that "the heart has its reasons which reason does not know," Horowitz concludes his journey by saying: "I do not have the faith of Pascal, but I know its feelingÂ…. I will be unafraid when death comes. I will feel my way toward the horizon in front of me, and my heart will take me home."

ROY VAUGHAN'S REVIEW 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I FOUND DR. WALSH'S GUIDE TO SURVING PROSTATE CANCER VERY INFORMATIVE.
THE ONLY NEGATIVE COMMENT I WOULD MAKE IS : THAT THE BOOK WAS A 2001 EDITION, WHICH IS QUITE OLD FOR MEDICAL INFORMATION.

Walsh's book is great but not perfect. 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read five books on prostate cancer. This is the best of them. However, it is somewhat biased in favor of open surgery (as opposed to laparoscopic, and robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery). Also, some of his data are outdated, e.g., on p. 317 he quotes from a Mayo Clinic study without mentioning that the study was based on 1991-1993, i.e., pre-PSA-era, data, when men were diagnosed with more advanced disease than they are today. However, these are minor flaws in an otherwise excellent book.

Editorial Review:

This year, an estimated 3,000 American men will die of prostate cancer, and more than 30,000 will be diagnosed with the disease. But with early diagnosis and better treatments, the medical establishment has made progress towards defeating this devastating illness. This invaluable guide covers every aspect of prostate cancer, from potential causes to diagnosis, treatments, and innovative means of controlling advanced stages of cancer. It also addresses impotence and incontinence after surgery, tells men what to look for in a surgeon, and features a section on alternative medicine. With an extensive glossary, index, and a listing of where to get help, this comprehensive book is the definitive guide on prostate cancer.

Excellent Medical Advice 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"Saving Your Sex Life" is the most informative book I have read concerning Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and prostate cancer. A must read book for every male that will face prostate surgery or radiation treatment in the near future, as well as those men who are concerned about restoring their sexual function after prostrate surgery. Dr. Mulhall has gone to great depths, chapter by chapter, to explain in detail the various processes and procedures used to treat ED. Moreover, Dr. Mulhall has taken a complex topic and transformed the issues into plain, simple language that every reader may easily understand. This book gives men insight to post-operative assistance that is readily available to treat ED situations.

Editorial Review:

In a straightforward style, Dr. John Mulhall guides the reader through the basics of male sexuality, explains the role of testosterone, the functions of the prostate, and the common difficulties men encounter when disease strikes. In plain language, this book spells out the causes and symptoms of prostate disease and diseases of the lower urinary tract and the approach to deal with the aftermath of treatment.

Excellent book on the subject. 5 out of 5 stars.
50 of 51 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book that demonstrates that prostate cancer is mainly a nutritional disease. We in the West have a far higher prostate cancer rate than our Asian counterparts. And, it is due to diet, not ethnicity, or genes. When Asians emigrate to our shores and adopt our Western diet (rich in animal saturated fat), their prostate cancer rates immediately rises up to our levels.

The author extensively details how to restructure our Western diet so as to prevent and cure prostate cancer. This entails reducing our intake of saturated fats, mainly red meat, but also reduce dairy products. It also entails eating more soy in every shape or form (milk, tofu, soy powder). The author also recommends specific supplements. Some are well known like the antioxidant vitamins (C, E). But, others are not so well known such as Selenium, Soy proteins, among many others.

The author provides a lot of information about the PSA test. He is the first to recognize that this test is not very accurate. But, he also recommends several back up tests and benchmarks which can really enhance both the accuracy and the information value of the PSA test. Some of these back up tests include: PSA density, Free PSA test, and ultrasound. If you take the PSA test, and you come up with a high value (>4), you ought to follow through with these other non invasive tests who may very well prevent the need for much more uncomfortable and invasive tests.

The author provides extensive advice on all the different options to cure prostate cancer. On this ground, this book is excellent for several reasons. First, every statement the author makes is referenced and well supported by scientific studies. So, it is not just the author's opinion you are reading about. You are getting information on current scientific knowledge. Second, the author has gotten detailed testimonials by doctors and other individuals (including Mike Milken former king of the Junk Bond set) on how they deal with their own prostate cancer. How they have modified their lifestyle, and nutrition, and what cure path are they taking. This is most fascinating because there are no clearly right or wrong answers at this stage. There are definitely multiple options on how to treat this disease, each with their own trade offs.

Ultimately, prostate cancer treatment is very much an individual decision. This book can provide you much valuable information to remove most of the anxiety associated with taking some hard decisions. In my case, it has removed a good deal of anxiety on how I can prevent this condition. Like in anything, prevention is the best defense. And, this book can help you do that.

If you are concerned about your prostate and overall health, I also strongly recommend the book "The Harvard Medical School Guide To Men's Health." It covers any ailment related to the prostate as well as many other conditions that affect the male gender.

Editorial Review:

Not only for men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer but also for men who wish to decrease the risk of developing the disease, this book - with its focus on nutrition and lifestyle improvements - offers hope, expert advice, and a simple, sensible program for staving off a dread killer.

Comments on Surviving Prostate Cancer without surgery 2 out of 5 stars.
54 of 58 people found this review helpful.

The book suffers from a rhetorical bias against surgery -- a bias that leads to little good being said about surgery. A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that if you see a surgeon about treatment options he/she will likely represent surgery; if you initially see a radiologist, the recommendation is likely to be radiation.

As other reviewers have pointed out, a man facing treatment options must determine if surgery that is right for him. IMRT/seeds is a great approach but many patients aren't eligible due to the progression of the cancer. Similarly, expansion of the cancer beyond the prostate gland may mean that surgery is not feasible. But surgery is, in my experience, one of the best options for a T2a or T2b diagnosis. Obviously much depends on the skill of the surgeon but if the surgeon manages to excise all the cancerous tissue, you will be in great shape re recurrence of cancer. The same cannot be said about hormone therapy.

I would make two points about surgery versus other options (all the while emphasizing that the best option depends on the state of your cancer). First, I found that men facing the treatment decision often recoil in horror at the idea of being cut open, nerve bundles being severed and a Foley catheter in their penis for two or three weeks. A tough call. But remind yourself that once the surgery is over and the catheter is out, you are done. Hopefully the surgeon will save enough nerve bundles that you will be able to function sexually, with a little help from the blue pill. I had the surgery and have not taken one bit of medication or treatment since. Luckily for me, the surgeon got it all and my PSA remains zero. You will also have the psychological relief of knowing that the cancerous object is gone from your body. (I was influenced by a certain famous football coach who said, 'as soon as I got the diagnosis I wanted this thing out of me')

Second, surgical techniques are getting better. Robots, cryogenic techniques and other technology are starting to move into the mainstream. Many surgeons have done hundreds of these operations. Success stories are increasing. The same cannot be said of radiation -- it still is likely to devastate surrounding tissue. Hormone therapy can be useful but the patient really needs to talk at length with his doctor about how long the course of treatment will take and the side effects, which can be terrible.

A final bonus re surgery. If it does not succeed, ADT therapy remains an option.

To all prostate patients: evaluate every option carefully and develop a good sense of the prospects for success of each option. Hang in there.

Editorial Review:
