Great book for the questions 5 out of 5 stars.

I was recently diagnosed as having prostate cancer. I am 63 years old/young. Very depressing. (not that I am 63, but that I have cancer;>)) I had/have no symtoms. I went for an annual physical and my PSA was high. My urologist loaned me this book. It answered all of my questions about prostate cancer. I realize that this book isn't the last on the subject, but it is a great help to me. It is very objecvtive. NO BS! That is all that I care about. I don't want sugar coating at this point. I will certainly read some other publications before I make a decision as to what procedure I will undergo. But, I would recommend this book to any man who has any questions about the disease and which route that he may want to take. The most important questions are about impotence and incontinence. It explains it all. It goes into procedures and much more. Not a feel good book, but it will help you to make your decisions.

Editorial Review:

This text is a patient-oriented guide to dealing with prostate cancer. Questions and answers cover basic questions about the disease such as risk factors and causes; methods of prevention, screening, and diagnosis; available treatments and how to choose among them; and ways of coping with common emotional and physical difficulties associated with the diagnosis and treatment. The authors are a prostate cancer survivor and two urologic surgeons who team up to provide both a doctor's and a patient's perspective in answering these common questions.

Editorial Review:

For men approaching forty and older, the prostate gland is frequently a source of health problems, ranging from mild nuisances to life-threatening malignancies. Thus, it’s important that every man understand what the prostate is, what to do to avoid future problems, and how to treat existing ones.

Dr. J. Stephen Jones—a leading urologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a nationally recognized authority on prostate problems and treatment—has written this comprehensive, thorough, informative, and completely accessible volume to give men all they need to know about this potentially troublesome organ. The book, divided into three sections, covers the basic anatomy and function of the prostate, benign conditions that most men eventually experience, and prostate cancer. Using accessible and informative language, Dr. Jones explains: · what to expect from a trip to the urologist’s office and different examination techniques · the impact of sexual activity on prostate and overall health · benign conditions, · alternative or complementary remedies · the typical symptoms of prostatitis and treatment of an enlarged prostate · PSA screening and the controversy surrounding its effectiveness · prostate ultrasound and biopsy · treatment options including laser surgery, cryosurgery, and brachytherapy (radioactive seed implants) · managing the complications of and coping with prostate cancer · and much additional crucial and potentially life-saving information. Containing the most recent developments in detection and treatment of prostate conditions, this superb, user-friendly reference guide should be owned by every man.

This book is great and covers gay men and prostate cancer from all angles. It suppliments what I have already learned from the prostate cancer pages at http://www.malecare.com . I am a member of the gay prostate cancer support group organization and this book has my recomendation to you.

Editorial Review:

A Gay Man's Guide to Prostate Cancer explores personal experiences as well as the medical facts about the second leading cause of cancer death in men, straight from medical and mental health professionals and gay men from different walks of life. This insightful perspective on being gay in a predominantly heterosexual medical world emphasizes the unique concerns gay men have when confronted with this life-altering disease. Physicians, psychotherapists, gay men, their friends and loved ones will find this book especially helpful in understanding the challenges of being diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to MaleCare, Inc., a nonprofit organization that specifically serves men with various forms of cancer and organizes self-help groups specifically targeted to gay men with prostate cancer.

This book saved my life and sanity! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I'm 58 years old and I'm not exaggerating when I say that Don Kaltenbach's book saved me, and in more ways than one. I was diagnosed with a Stage T2C prostate cancer in 2003. My PSA was 10 and my biopsy-Gleason score was 7. I was told by one of the top urologists in Los Angeles that I should make an appointment to have "a radical prostatectomy without delay" to remove my prostate. He also told me that most men with prostate cancer like mine have surgery, that I could be cured but that I would also run the risk of having one or more long-term side effects like incontinence and impotence (even with Viagra). My doctor didn't tell me that a small percentage of patients actually die from surgery, but I found that out after a friend of my wife gave me this book. I also learned from this book that my doctor was dead wrong: the fact is according to the latest statistics most men today with prostate cancer like mine are being treated with radiation "seeds" instead of surgery. I can tell you this whole prostate experience was the biggest scare of my life, and this book helped me cut through a lot of the confusion and myths that are out there. It even helped me see through the advice I was getting from an otherwise reputable doctor who was just a little too anxious to have me go under his knife.

So like the author, Kaltenbach (who's also a lawyer and a family man like I am) I had the seed implants, after a short run of external beam radiation. I went to a clinic in Seattle for the seeds and didn't even have to go to a hospital. And now I've done my homework and know that the odds are stacked in my favor -- that the cancer won't come back! I found out only recently that this was the same way former mayor Giuliani was cured of his prostate cancer. So I credit this book not only with saving my life, but also with saving my sex life and my marriage. If you've been diagnosed with this disease, take it from someone who's been there, you can save yourself a lot of anguish just by reading this book, getting yourself a second opinion and doing some hunting on the internet. And if you're lucky, you'll have a wife like mine who will help you.

Editorial Review:

Unlike many books dealing with medical conditions, this book tells it from the view of a patient confronted with life-threatening choices. Speaking from his own experience, prostate cancer survivor Don Kaltenbach cuts through the confusion and controversies. He tells how he avoided surgery and was successfully treated with radioactive "seed" implants (brachytherapy). Kaltenbach describes the entire range of available treatment options, including state-of-the-art Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). This newly revised edition of Prostate Cancer: A Survivor's Guide provides the most up-to-date information that may save your life or that of a loved one.

Must reading for all young geezers over fifty 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who's been caught by anyone who's had an operation (Did I show you my scar?) knows it's not fun to sit and listen to the details. Martin's style and insight makes you look forward to it, especially since this tome involves so much more.

You'll be enlightened to learn how medical science has advanced in the treatment of this disease, be fearful in the way it can sneak up on you, and be committed to annual prostate exams from the moment you put it down. But before you do, you'll have laughed (and cried) out loud.

Excellent description of the road to decision for PC 5 out of 5 stars.

Bill Martin does an excellent job of describing the events one encounters when diagnosed with PC. He does it in layman terms and with subtle humor. I've been there.

Book was excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer last winter, and we were given a copy of this book by a friend. We read and re-read it over and over. It was an excellent way to learn and discuss what was happening, and to learn what was going to happen. I highly reccommend it to anyone in this situation.

Editorial Review:

New research shows that up to 25 per cent of men in their 30s have microscopic, latent prostate cancer. By the time a man enters his 50s, the figure is even higher - 40 per cent. In some men, these cancers remain dormant, but in others they can become significant tumours, sometimes at great speed. As with breast cancer, Dr. Arnot has found that the foods men eat can have a profound influence on whether or not they get prostate cancer. In this book he explains what these foods are and how they can be used as part of an eating plan. His menus are based on the incredibly varied, time-tested and delicious cuisines from other cultures where the incidence of prostate cancer is dramatically lower than in the Western world. With recipes, advice on eating out and on the run, stress-busting techniques, fitness programmes, a self-test for assessing your own risk, and other prostate cancer-fighting strategies such as promising new drugs and supplements, this book should be a useful health reference for men.

The Best Book On Maintaining A Healthy Prostate-! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It doesn't get any better than this. What a great way to stay safe as you're staying fit. Dr. Colgan's program is right on the money with it's simple step by step approach. Why wait till the last minute with care for your prostate after it's way too late? I've read almost all of Dr. Colgan's books except the latest 3 that were only just released. Want to stay safe, enjoy a healthy sex life, and much else? Then I HIGHLY suggest that all males buy this book. Better yet,I think their wives' or girlfriends'or significant others' should buy this book for those men who they love. I don't like chemo or radiation or surgery, so better to follow this preventive maintainence program and live a long and healthy life. The problem with many men is that they're too busy thinking about what it costs to supplement oneself, yet they'll go out and buy many packs of cigarettes and many cases of beer which can lead to prostate problems. Too many men think with their pocket and their rocket,in an immediate sense, which they're only harming themselves in the long run. So following this program is like putting away money for a rainy day so you can enjoy your Golden Years-!

Editorial Review:

The first comparison of the breast cancer and the prostate cancer movements

Cancer Activism explores the interplay between advocacy, the media, and public perception through an analysis of breast cancer and prostate cancer activist groups over a nearly twenty-year period. Despite both diseases having nearly identical mortality and morbidity rates, Karen M. Kedrowski and Marilyn Stine Sarow present evidence from more than 4,200 news articles to show that the different groups have had markedly different impacts. They trace the rise of each movement from its beginning and explore how discussions about the diseases appeared on media, public, and government agendas. In an important exception to the feminist tenet that women as a group hold less power than men, Kedrowski and Sarow demonstrate that the breast cancer movement is not only larger and better organized than the prostate cancer movement, it is also far more successful at shaping media coverage, public opinion, and government policy.

A book I can't LIVE without! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It is 3 years since I bought this book,in April 2005, soon after being diagnosed with the most serious staging of prostate cancer. I had only just celebrated my 54th birthday and here was I being told that the prognosis was very, very bleak. I then bought and read Jane Plant's own inspiring story of her fight against breast cancer in her book "Your life In Your Hands", and I became convinced of the wisdom of her words and her successful strategy in the battle against such devastating illness. The first step in my fightback was to completely change my diet, and to do this I needed a guide to help me through the planning of all my daily meals. Never having been on any type of diet before, I was at a loss as to where to start, what to buy, what to avoid, and how to prepare and to cook the foods I would now need. This simple, well written book was my guiding light, my very own cookery 'bible. To this day it sits proudly on my kitchen shelf, now very well thumbed through and extrememly well worn.I could never have managed to stay on the path to recovery without it.And a recovery it has indeed been. Only last week, on 15th May 2008, my oncologist gave me my latest blood test results and told me how amazed and delighted he was that I had come through all the hormone treatment and radiotherapy so exceptionally well, and that after having stopped all medication 6 months ahead of schedule, my results were startling.I have a normal PSA level and my testosterone is equivalent to that of a healthy, younger man.I cannot praise this book highly enough, and I have waited three years to write this review, now being totally sure that buying it was one of the best decisions of my life.Thank you Prof Jane Plant. It worked for you, and you were magnanimous enough to write these books and to spread this message of hope to other cancer sufferers....and I am sure that there must be many others now in the world who are feeling as I do today....so very glad to be alive!
