Editorial Review:

This inspiring physical, emotional, and spiritual guide empowers patients to face diagnosis with dignity, explore their options realistically, and tackle recovery with optimism and determination.

The first book to emphasize robotic surgery for prostate cancer from an informed layman's perspective, CONQUER PROSTATE CANCER discusses the latest research and advances in treatment, and profiles twenty patients who chose various treatment options.

As the author and his wife share the most intimate details of their prostate cancer journey, readers learn how to:

-- Become an active member of their medical team
-- Reduce pain and stress and renew vitality
-- Overcome impotence and incontinence
-- Enhance intimate relationships
-- Draw strength from faith, family, and friends

Prominent robotic surgeon Dr. Robert Carey discusses medical and patient-care concerns and the author's wife provides a running commentary, sharing her thoughts about how she and her family coped with the disease and its effects.

With its low-key humor, hopeful tone, and well-researched facts, this book is a powerful tool for surviving prostate cancer, and a valuable resource for prostate cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones, The author, Rabbi Ed Weinsberg, is a prostate cancer survivor and rabbi with a doctorate in gerontology from Columbia University. Contributing author Dr. Robert Carey is a prominent urologist and robotic surgeon with a Ph.D. from MIT. Dr. David Kauder, the book's medical advisor, has been a urologist for the past 30 years and is a past president of the Massachusetts Association of Practicing Urologists.

"Rabbi Weinsberg draws on his own medical ordeal to bring guidance and comfort to others," says Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of "When Bad Things Happen to Good People."

Dr. Ellen Kreidman, psychologist and relationship expert appearing on Oprah and other national media calls the book "brilliant, inspiring, and gutsy," and says that it will enable its readers to "experience the joys of sex again."

"Successfully wrestles with the concerns of those confronted by prostate cancer," declares Dr. Robert Butler, M.D., President and CEO of the International Longevity Center and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Jerry Perisho, prostate cancer survivor, former freelance comedy writer for Jay Leno, David Letterman marveled how this book is "crammed full of laughter, stories, remarkable frankness, and great advice."

Leah Cohen, a prostate cancer survivor's wife and blog editor states, "I applaud the author for recognizing that wives, in their own way, get prostate cancer too."

Why I decided against this book 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Background: my PSA has doubled in 6 months, but is still under 4.0. I am putting off a 2nd biopsy until I have given dietary changes a chance to kick in.

{The cover of the book has a picture of tomatoes. I believe Lycopene to be over-hyped at present, since there are no studies that show supplementation lowering PSA levels.}

Mr. Guler's comments worried me. The meat issue is really a fat issue (I wonder if the surge in Atkins adherents will lead to a surge in prostate cancer). The fat issue, as I understand it, is (a) the quantity of fat and (b) an imbalance between omega-3 & omega-6 fats.

Im told that grass-fed beef is lower in fat & has a one-to-one ratio, whereas corn-fattened beef has very little omega-3. So beef isn't entirely out of the question.

Fish can be a problem. Farmed salmon is high in fat, but because of the feed, it contains little or no omega-3.

My new diet has more fish (not farmed) than meat. Complex carbs. Vegetables such as broccoli & peppers, but not potatoes. No dessert. No dairy. Zone diet portions. Any general purpose cookbook will provide sufficient recipes.

Editorial Review:

Based on solid scientific research and endorsed by leading oncologists, it includes dietary guidelines plus 188 delicious, cancer-fighting recipes.

The book is excellent, it is easy to read and understand. During the difficult period after finding out that you need prostate surgery the book offers support and guidance. The book explains all the medical terms thrown at patients, which makes it an essential for the "average patient". I recommend this book to every patient and his family. A job WELL done!

Editorial Review:

so you're having prostate surgery

If you're facing prostate surgery, this book is the ultimate guide. It puts you firmly in the driver's seat, from deciding whether you actually need surgery, through the procedure itself, to the quickest routes to recovery. Surgery for both benign prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are covered in step-by-step detail, as are alternative treatments such as drug therapy. Real-life patient stories, extensive self-help sections, and detailed illustrations fully explain each procedure, and a quick-fix glossary and who's who of medical staff take the mystery out of medicine. Also included are a comprehensive directory to Internet and other resources, a guide to complementary therapies, and a diary to help you keep track of your treatment--and your recovery.

This is a very excellent review of urology for the general public. It is very comprehensive,yet easy to read and understand. The illustrations are also extremely helpful. This book should be a standard to every man and woman since it deals with the common health problems that many men and their spouses encounter. The information is very up to date and is presented in a extremely interesting and informative fashion. I would very highly recommend this to all.

Editorial Review:

More than 15 million American men have not had a basic health check-up in five years or more! Men who may have questions about common men’s health issues often find it awkward to seek answers, thinking it is "taboo" to discuss their health concerns relating to reproduction and the genitalia.

Men who in the past felt they had nowhere to go for reliable information about these "sensitive" issues can turn to this comprehensive guide to men’s health, covering topics from prostate cancer to STDs. Each chapter includes medical advice on causes, diagnosis, and treatment options. Plus, you’ll find the latest information on the drug Viagra!

Coping With Errectile Dysfunction 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 36 people found this review helpful.

COPING WITH ERRECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Errectile dysfunction, or E.D. as referred to in tv ads, is a condition many men experience as they age. It is also often a side effect of surgical or radiation treatment of prostate cancer, something one in five men will likely experience. It can also be related to diabetes or heart conditions.

Even though help is available, many men feel too self-conscious to do anything about or even discuss it with their doctor. They see the loss of their "manhood", an embarrassing and private matter. It needn't be and help is available.

Ralph Alterowitz developed prostate cancer. After surgery he, like I have done in previous columns, talked about it openly with individuals and to groups. He and his wife Barbara found that people most needed to discuss the effect of prostate cancer on their sexuality. Their book, The Lovin' Ain't Over, published in 1999, serves two very important functions.

The first part shows that sexuality is not just about intercourse or orgasm. This may be a radical idea for some men, since from adolescence on, most men thought and were taught sex was only about those. The Alterowitz's focus on intimacy, both emotional and physical. They focus on the fact that all of our body has sensitive and pleasurable responses. They share enjoyable ways of touching and pleasuring, not just those we generally associate as being sexual. Their three key words for romantic and sexual health are: communicate, communicate, communicate. They outline various ways of courting and showing affection, that don't need to end in intercourse. They point out that men can still experience arousal and sexual enjoyment, despite the effects of surgery or other illnesses on their sexual response. It may be different, both in experience and intensity, but it is still there if they learn to recognize, adapt to and enjoy it.

They stress that sexual function is related to more to humanness and love between partners, than to a man's ability to have an erection or to climax.

In many ways their ideas on sexuality and communication parallel and complement the excellent book, Sex Is A Thirteen Letter Word published in 1995 by Bill and Carolyn Chernenkoff, sexual therapists in Saskatoon.

The second part of The Lovin' Ain't Over, outlines various options for coping with errectile dysfunction, including medications like Viagara, vacuum pumps and injections. Many new options, both with respect to surgical techniques and new medications are currently being developed. The authors are careful to point out the side effects and risk of various forms of treatment, being careful not to endorse any themselves. They stress that men need to consult their physician, as all the treatments, including vacuum pumps, require a doctor's prescription.

Many of the mediations they discussed in their 1999 edition were not available yet, but were at different stages of the required testing and clinical trials required before release. Because of this, the Alterowitz's are currently working on an updated edition of their book, which I look forward to seeing.

They don't take complete credit for the book. They researched their topic well. They talked and interviewed many couples about their sexual adjustments. They consulted researchers and pharmaceutical companies for accurate information. They even include a feedback sheet for readers to send in. I have talked with Ralph by phone and am impressed with the couple's desire to help men find ways to deal creatively and effectively with the subject that is just becoming okay to talk or write about.

Editorial Review:

"Love and Sex After Prostate Disease" offers practical advice on life and love after prostate disease. The authors have survived prostate cancer and its consequences. They have talked to hundreds of survivors and partners. Their book offers straight talk on intimacy, quality of life issues, and communication. Chapters include:

* Impotence: An Opportunity to Regain Intimacy
* Facts About Impotence
* Arousal
* Regaining Intimacy
* Commerical Therapies and Medications
* What To Do Next

This book answered questions I had after the fact 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I had an excellent Urologist. He prepared me well for the surgery and afterwards, but as I was in the middle of recovery a number of other questions arose. Rather than call the office every day with the next question, I ordered this book and read it. I had a lot of time during recovery to think about a number of things. This form of cancer is easy to live through if you approach it the right way. The one area I did not anticipate was post operative depression. This book got me through that - thanks!

Editorial Review:

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men—about 1 in 6 will be diagnosed in his lifetime—but fortunately it is also one of the most treatable cancers. From the first moment of his diagnosis, author Christopher Lukas took charge and educated himself on every aspect of his condition. Now, as a "patient-expert," he guides those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with prostate cancer. Lukas provides crucial information about the nature of the disease, treatment options, diet, exercise, social concerns, emotional issues, networking with others, and much more. The First Year®-Prostate Cancer will be an essential resource for everyone who wants to be an informed, active participant in the management of their condition.

Move Over Beethoven 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Take down the wallful of industry awards, put away the Clios, move over Beethoven, this is Bert Gottlieb's finest hour. Not that Beethoven would notice, nor Dicken's or Faulkner for that matter. This is not just a book. Not just a string of incisive words, carefully and beautifully crafted; it's more the struggle of a man who was suddenly scared witless, and emerges, witfully, I must add, scaring the boogey man.

This is a must read for anyone over 50. Not a manual about the aspects of Prostate Cancer, although it is that, rather a chronicle of the all too human being we all carry around in us and forget.

I read it in two sittings and I was moved. There were laughs, there were tears. I learned a lot. I hope I never have to use what I learned. If I do, I hope I can face it a bravely as Bert Gottlieb did.

Well done!

Editorial Review:

Prostate cancer for men -- like breast cancer for women -- has very serious psychological as well as physical ramifications. One author of this candid book is the patient suffering from the disease. His account of his diagnosis, treatment over two years, and eventually cure is touching, profane, and often uproarious as it evokes the physical and emotional rollercoaster engendered by this illness. The second author is the patient's doctor. His observations, alternating chronologically with those of the patient, record and humane observations as the disease takes its course. The result is a comprehensive understanding of the psychological, the physical, and the clinical aspects of prostate cancer.
