A must for your bookshelf 5 out of 5 stars.

If you sign out breast biopsies, then you really must own Rosen's Breast Pathology AND this small altas. It's now in it's second edition and is meant to be used in conjuction with the larger textbook. The writing, as with all of Rosen's material, is clear, and the pictures range from good to excellent. No real drawbacks, and it's a book that will be used very often in any busy practice.

Editorial Review:

Edited by two eminent authorities on breast pathology, this heavily illustrated text offers essential guidance on diagnostic evaluation of needle core biopsies. The focus is on the most common and challenging differential diagnostic problems encountered in these specimens. More than 1,000 full-color illustrations depict the entire spectrum of breast pathology seen in needle core biopsies. This edition includes many new cases and illustrations, discussions on the growing importance of immunopathology, and updated guidelines on pathologic examination and reporting of needle core biopsy specimens. Contributions by two well-known radiologists present state-of-the-art information on the techniques and clinical impact of imaging-guided needle core biopsy.

fans will appreciate this enjoyable whodunit 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Between being a breast cancer survivor and the serpentine murder attempt on her life (see STICKY FINGERS), Tess Camillo knows she has come a long way baby. The San Diego resident vows to live her life to the fullest and not let her fears get in her way.

Tess and her roommate Lana Maki attend the Gabrielle Leatheross concert; though they are more interested in hearing the opening act, 1980s fold rock star Cody Crowne perform. The next day Tess decides to relax in Torrey Pines States Preserve. When she hears ravens squawking she goes to investigate only to find a crucified Cody. After calling the police, Tess goes home and tells Lana what she saw, horrifying her roommate and her confidante Raj her Welsh Terrier owner. Unable to let the cops do their job, Tess and Lana feel a need to sleuth.

Putting aside the logic of two amateurs investigating a homicide of a celebrity stranger (let alone anyone), fans will appreciate this enjoyable whodunit. The story line is character driven. The mystery is fun especially a late twist as Tess and her Finnish friend compete with the cops and a killer willing to add two nosy females to the death list.

Editorial Review:

Folk-rocker Cody Crowne warmed up the crowd at a San Diego concert. In the audience were quick-witted breast cancer survivor Tess Camillo and her loopy housemate, Lana...and a twisted killer. Amateur sleuth Tess discovers Cody's body the next morning--crucified in a San Diego park. When clues lead Tess and Lana from the cocktail parties of Hollywood music producers to a church where members praise the nail-scarred hands, the women must confront the dark heart responsible for Cody's crucifixion --before they face the same fate.

Editorial Review:

”An in-depth exploration of the symptoms experienced by some women after breast cancer treatment, giving voice to a neglected aspect of the breast cancer experience. . . . This book calls important attention to the plight of these women.”
—Patatricia A. Ganz, University of California, Los Angeles, Schools of Medicine and Public Health

Chemo brain. Fatigue. Chronic pain. Insomnia. Depression. These are just a few of the ongoing, debilitating symptoms that plague some breast-cancer survivors long after their treatments have officially ended. While there are hundreds of books about breast cancer, ranging from practical medical advice to inspirational stories of survivors, what has been missing until now is testimony from the thousands of women who continue to struggle with persistent health problems.

After the Cure is a compelling read filled with fascinating portraits of more than seventy women who are living with the aftermath of breast cancer. Emily K. Abel is one of these women. She and her colleague, Saskia K. Subramanian, whose mother died of cancer, interviewed more than seventy breast cancer survivors who have suffered from post-treatment symptoms. Having heard repeatedly that “the problems are all in your head,” many don't know where to turn for help. The doctors who now refuse to validate their symptoms are often the very ones they depended on to provide life-saving treatments. Sometimes family members who provided essential support through months of chemotherapy and radiation don't believe them. Their work lives, already disrupted by both cancer and its treatment, are further undermined by the lingering symptoms. And every symptom serves as a constant reminder of the trauma of diagnosis, the ordeal of treatment, and the specter of recurrence.

Most narratives about surviving breast cancer end with the conclusion of chemotherapy and radiation, painting stereotypical portraits of triumphantly healthy survivors, women who not only survive but emerge better and stronger than before. Here, at last, survivors step out of the shadows and speak compellingly about their “real” stories, giving voice to the complicated, often painful realities of life after the cure.

This book received funding from the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The Art of Dream Healing 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Dreaming is healing. Our bodies speak to us in dreams, giving us early warning of symptoms we might develop, showing us what they need to stay well. Dreams give us fresh and powerful images for self-healing. Dreams are also the language of the soul; they put us in touch with wells of memory and sources of creativity and energy far beyond the clutter and confusion of the little everyday mind. Beyond this, dreams are experiences of the soul, and can take us - sleeping or hyper-awake - into realms where we can have direct access to sacred healers and teachers.

These themes and possibilities come vividly alive in Wanda Burch's brave and beautiful book She Who Dreams, which is both the narrative of a personal journey into healing through dreaming and an incitement to bring the gifts of active dreaming into our everyday lives.

I have been sharing dreams with Wanda since early in 1987, and I know the depth of experience and the deeps of dreaming from which this book flows. Her dreams diagnosed a life-threatening illness (breast cancer) a year before the doctors found symptoms. Her dreams guided her choice of treatment, gave her powerful imagery for self-healing and recovery, enabled her to grow a creative relationship with her physicians and awakened her to a deeper life and a vital engagement with the world as a dreambringer - one of those who creates a safe space for others to open to the gifts of dreaming, and can bring a dream to someone in need of a dream.

Her personal story is quite fascinating. Her first dream mentor was her Irish-American grandmother, a "wise woman" of the Alabama hill country. Later she met the dreamers of the Iroquois, one of whom appeared at her back door in the form of a white wolf.

But it is the story of everyday trials, more than the extraordinary elements in this book, that will touch the hearts of many readers and bring them practical guidance that is urgently needed. Wanda shows how dreams can get us through. One of her most valuable contributions to the literature of healing and recovery is to show us how we can use the self-healing tools that flow from dreamwork to support conventional medical treatments, smoothing the process and reducing adverse side-effects. For this alone, She Who Dreams is an invaluable resource for healthcare professionals, therapists, healers and caregivers.

Editorial Review:

Wanda Burch dreamt that she would die at a certain age; her dreams foretold her diagnosis of cancer, and then guided her toward treatment and wellness. She took advantage of all the usual medical resources available to her, but believes she is alive because of her intimate engagement with the dreamworld. She Who Dreams takes the reader into that healing dreamworld, opening a path to self-diagnosis and physical and psychic health. Through powerful prose and practical exercises, this book describes in compelling detail a life lived and deepened, and a death postponed. In the process it shows that wisdom lives within everyone, and that anyone can tap into that wisdom through dreamwork.

Editorial Review:

Although cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death for young adults in the United States, 20- and 30-something cancer patients have had few resources that address their unique cancer-related concerns. Written by an author who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 27, this book fills the gap with interviews and advice from Gen-X and Gen-Y cancer survivors, who cover everything from dating and fertility questions to health insurance and career challenges.

Kairol Rosenthal (Chicago, IL) is a patient advocate for young adults with cancer and works with national organizations such as Gilda's Club and I'm Too Young For This. She lectures on healthcare issues at Columbia College and is a senior correspondent on "The Stupid Cancer Show," a live weekly Web broadcast. She has been featured in the New York Times and Harper's Bazaar, and her writing appeared in Help Me Live: 20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know (978-1-58761-212-1).

Editorial Review:

The effects of mental disorder are apparent and pervasive, in suffering, loss of freedom and life opportunities, negative impacts on education, work satisfaction and productivity, complications in law, institutions of healthcare, and more. With a new edition of the 'bible' of psychiatric diagnosis - the DSM - under developmental, it is timely to take a step back and re-evalutate exactly how we diagnose and define mental disorder.
This new book by Derek Bolton tackles the problems involved in the definition and boundaries of mental disorder. It addresses two main questions regarding mental illness. Firstly, what is the basis of the standards or norms by which we judge that a person has a mental disorder - that the person's mind is not working as it should, that their mental functioning is abnormal? Controversies about these questions have been dominated by the contrast between norms that are medical, scientific or natural, on the one hand, and social norms on the other. The norms that define mental disorder seem to belong to psychiatry, to be medical and scientific, but are they really social norms, hijacked and disguised by the medical profession?
Secondly, what is the validity of the distinction between mental disorder and order, between abnormal and normal mental functioning? To what extent, notwithstanding appearances, does mental disorder involve meaningful reactions and problem-solving? These responses may be to normal problems of living, or to not so normal problems - to severe psycho-social challenges. Is there after all order in mental disorder?
With the closing of asylums and the appearance of care in the community, mental disorder is now in our midst. While attempts have been made to define clearly a concept of mental disorder that is truly medical as opposed to social, there is increasing evidence that such a distinction is unviable - there is no clear line between what is normal in the population and what is abnormal. 'What is Mental Disorder?' reviews these various crucial developments and their profound impact for the concept and its boundaries in a provocative and timely book.

Editorial Review:

In 1970, one out of ten American women developed breast cancer. Now it is one out of eight - and soon it will be one out of seven. It is a disease women dread. Yet physicians, who tell patients how to avoid heart attacks, have nothing to say about the prevention of breast cancer. By the time a cancer cell in the breast grows into a diagnosable breast cancer, usually 15 to 20 years have elapsed. During this long journey, the cancer is inhibited by many factors and stimulated by others. It is possible to enhance the inhibitors and diminish the stimulators to snuff out the tiny cancer, or at least, to delay its clinical appearance. This book provides the reader clear strategies to reduce the risk of breast cancer - strategies that are based not only on my experience as an oncologist, but also on an extensive review of scientific literature. These strategies consist of simple and natural measures: things to take and things to do, with little or no use of pharmaceuticals. My dream is to share this information with all women and their doctors with the hope that we can cut down the occurrence of this horrible disease.
