Cancer Schmancer a hit 5 out of 5 stars.

Very helpful to women. Whether they have been diagnosed with uterine cancer or not, all women should treat themselves to this book so that should the time come when they experience the symptoms Fran had or know someone who has, they will be educated. And a word of caution: EVEN IF a D & C shows no cancer cells, you STILL can have uterine cancer. I know firsthand of someone who did. The cancer was hidden in the muscle of the uterus, Stage 1-C, undetectable by a D & C. If symptoms persist, a good doctor will recommend a hysterectomy. Don't settle for a "wait & see" attitude. The doc of the person I know said he had not had a case like my friend's in his entire career & made the right decision by recommending a total hysterectomy.

Editorial Review:

From Fran Drescher, here's the funny and empowering New York Times bestseller about taking charge of health problems and finding humor in the face of adversity. Part inspirational cancer-survival story, part memoir-as-a-laugh-riot, CANCER SCHMANCER picks up where Fran's last book, Enter Whining, left off. After the publication of that book, Fran's life launched into a downward spiral. She separated from a long and complicated relationship, her TV series started to slip in the ratings, and the health of her beloved dog Chester was failing fast. Then came the mysterious symptoms no doctor could explain. With her trademark sense of humor, Fran tells of her long search for answers and the cancer diagnosis that she ultimately beat. But not before a gold mine of insights were revealed to her about the importance of taking charge of your own health and recognizing what's most important in life.

Editorial Review:

A book by kids to help your kids deal with cancer in the family

When Abigail and Adrienne’s mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. When the two sisters (then ages 11 and 9) couldn’t find any books for kids that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they decided to write one themselves. The result? Our Mom Has Cancer, a humorous, honest, hopeful account of the year their mother underwent treatment for breast cancer, delightfully illustrated with drawings by Abigail and Adrienne.

“This is by far the best of several children’s picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It [shows] the passage of time during treatment, and it [shows] that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time . . . .This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer.”

A must read and must have book for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was the first one I read after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and it is a book to which I often return. It's written in a down-to-earth, approachable style that still conveys current information without oversimplifying it for the lay reader. The author is a doctor who is a noted breast cancer expert AND a breast cancer survivor herself. These facts combine to make this book a very valuable resource and an important addition to the "must-have" books on breast cancer.

not enough info 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As a healthcare provider myself, I was a little disappointed that the information, coming from a nurse was a bit too surficial -- lots of touchy-feelies, not enough hard core info.

Reconstruction issues were glossed over. Brachytherapy was not described. Took me a long time to figure out how chemo and hormonal therapy fit together.

Susan Love's and Vladimir Lange's books are better if you want to figure out what to do, fast.

Editorial Review:

Your Breast Cancer Treatment Handbook has been called the most effective and empowering breast cancer book both by patients and healthcare professionals. This valuable book is designed for the newly diagnosed breast cancer patient. It provides the patient with current, easy-to-understand explanations of procedures and treatments; decision making guidelines; and inspirational encouragment as the patient progresses through the breast cancer experience. No treatment advise is given, allowing the treatment team and the patient to work as partners for the final treatment decisions. Survivors' reassuring remarks appear throughout the book to offer support and encouragement.

If you buy only one cancer book, make it this one 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I found this book while browsing in a bookstore early in my chemotherapy adventure. In many ways it helped me survive the ordeal. The writing is wonderful--engaging, humorous, realistic, and at times heart-wrenching. There are many "this is how I survived cancer" books around, but this one is different somehow. It meant so much to me, and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis.

A unique and humorous look in the face of breast cancer 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Debra Jarvis has the perspective few other cancer patients have: that of a cancer patient and cancer chaplain. When I think of "chaplain", I imagine a older gentleman with a collar and a bible, ready to read me my last rites; Debra is the antithesis of this. She is a young, funny woman with a surprisingly secular approach to God, and she is able to minister to people with cancer in a way that touches everyone. And when she is diagnosed with stage II breast cancer, her reactions and emotions strike a nerve as genuinely human and real -- her training as a chaplain doesn't give her any special superhuman strength to deal with it more than any of her patients.

This book is a great insight into a cancer patient's journey, especially for a loved one or caregiver. When a friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer, I think this book was as helpful for her as it was for me in learning to speak about it. Just like a great film, this book will make you laugh and cry, but ultimately uplift the experience of cancer and shine light on the dark shadows that surround it.

Editorial Review:

For more than two decades, author Debra Jarvis has counseled cancer patients in her work as a chaplain. Then, in an ironic twist, she herself was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. This warm, wise book blends these stories. Armed with humor, candor, and an indomitable spirit, Jarvis opens a rare window into the interwoven world of medical technology and procedure, human vulnerability and strength, and the spiritual issues that converge in the experience of living through illness and living through life.

Editorial Review:

Breast cancer will strike one out of every 8 women. It is the disease women dread the most. It can disfigure, mutilate and scar womanhood; and its therapy can impair quality of life. Yet there is no concentrated medical effort to prevent it. Physicians focus is on early detection. They simply do not counsel their patients on breast cancer prevention. This book provides clear strategies to reduce the risk of breast cancer - strategies that are not only based on the author's experience as an oncologist, but also on an extensive review of the scientific literature. These strategies consist of simple and natural measures: things to take and things to do, with little or no use of pharmaceuticals. This is a book for all women.

Editorial Review:

An irreverent, funny, compassionate look at what having breast cancer means—and what it doesn’t.

From the pink ribbons to the websites that sell related accessories and stuffed animals, breast cancer has morphed from a disease to an experience. And at every step of the way, society tells women that this experience can teach them profound lessons and maybe even give them a peek at the meaning of life.

But what if it doesn’t?

Before Shelley Lewis got breast cancer she was a smart, edgy network producer. After the long month of treatment ended, she was still a smart, edgy network producer. The cancer was gone but in its place there was no epiphany, no new perspective on life. Lewis found that for herself and other women, breast cancer was many things, but it was not necessarily an opportunity for self-improvement. It didn’t teach them lessons, but surviving it did draw on hard-won life lessons they’d already learned.

A wonderful interweaving of the author’s personal story, interviews with breast cancer survivors, and a sharp-eyed journalist’s look at the breast cancer “community,” this book is full of unconventional wisdom, unexpected advice, and hilarious observations about life inside the pink bubble.

Editorial Review:

“I want to be brave. I want to be big. I want to be gracious and cool. I want to be the Audrey Hepburn of cancer…”

Gail Konop Baker was a runner, yoga practitioner, and lifelong subscriber to Prevention magazine. As her forty-sixth birthday approached, she looked forward to a time when she could at last take a deep breath, with one child heading off to college and the other two busy with their lives. She finally felt as if she was getting her life back.

Then, right before Valentine’s Day 2006, she heard the words that would forever change her: Just to be safe, I think we should biopsy.

It was the beginning of her year-long struggle with breast cancer and its fallout—one that would upstage any midlife crisis she’d fretted was waiting in the wings. “I want to feel bad about my neck. I do,” she writes. “But I feel bad I may not ever get to feel bad about my neck.” Gail was suddenly faced with the truth that awaits us all—this was her life, and she would do anything to hold on to it. As a doctor’s wife, she knew more than she should about her diagnosis and treatment. As a mother, she found unbearable the idea of not being there for the next birthday, next graduation, next anything. And as a woman who’d put her dreams on hold for years, she was determined to make every minute count.

But Cancer Is a Bitch is about much more than the “C” word; it's about the outrageous challenges of marriage, the joys and unpredictability of motherhood, about figuring out what it is you want to do with your life, about wanting to live now.

Funny, raw, and moving, this story will resonate with every mother and wife, and with anyone who has been affected by cancer. It is one woman’s unforgettable, beautifully told account of juggling midlife and motherhood with a rogue boob—and, ultimately, triumphing.

Editorial Review:

I have taken my personal experience in practice along with the details of treatment of patient together with published literature and proposed a testable theory of breast cancer. The lack of a theory of cancer and especially breast cancer has made treatment difficult and empirical.

The book is divided into four parts. The first part discusses iodine. From published facts, we can arrive at a proposal that iodine could be the first phase of a two phase cancer defence system. It appears that iodine in the extra-cellular fluid outside of the cells is the main surveillance system for abnormal cells. Iodine also triggers the natural death of normal cells in the body. There are many cells types in the body undergoing a natural death. For example some of the cells in the stomach have lives of only 2-3 days. The name of this process is apoptosis.

Carefully documented descriptions of the cancer process at different places in the body reveals most cancers have similar stages through which it passes. The cancers are not really cancer until the cells start to move by invasion through the nearby connective tissue. Cells develop abnormalities for a variety of reasons and can continue to become abnormal all the way up through atypical cells and to carcinoma in situ. Carcinoma in situ is the dividing line between the two phases of cancer development. Iodine in correct doses will reverse all of the changes up to and including the carcinoma in situ.

The thyroid hormone controls connective tissue function. So connective tissue around organs forms a structural biological barrier to the spread of cancer. Cancer spread to distant organs only develops in the connective tissue of those organs. Therefore, if the connective tissue defence is not strong then the cancerous cell from a distant site can land there and grow. If however the thyroid hormone level in the connective tissue is high enough then the connective tissue will perform its normal defence duties and not allow the cancer cell to enter it and develop.

Using these principles, fibrocystic disease and breast cancer become more understandable. Supplemental iodine in the correct doses will remove all lesions from carcinoma in situ back to just an abnormal cell by triggering death of these cells by apoptosis. Spread of cancer cells in the connective tissue can be arrested by adequate treatment with thyroid hormone to strengthen the connective tissue barrier.

My experience with patients using this approach so far has been successful. The principles are that there are two phases to cancer one controlled by iodine and the other by thyroid hormone. Thus the book deals with the prevention and survival of breast cancer.
