Review of Cardenosa's "Breast Imaging Companion" 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

As a radiology resident in a very busy county hospital, I have all that I can do to keep up with the workload, much less find time for academic reading. Prior to the 1999 in-service examination, I read the ACR syllabus and Cardenosa's "Breast Imaging Companion."

The combination of these two texts served me well, as I scored in the 100th percentile on the breast imaging section. Cardenosa's book is concise, filled with both "classic" and atypical images. It is a rapid read, while maintaining a reasonably comprehensive level of dialogue.

I would reccomend it to anyone learning mammography for the first time and, furthermore, I would recommend that you keep it nearby, as you will refer to it frequently for troubleshooting in this difficult field.

Editorial Review:

The top-selling title in our Imaging Companion Series is now in its revised, updated Third Edition. Featuring over 1,000 large, clear images accompanied by brief, bulleted "key facts," this how-to book provides everything readers need to obtain high-quality scans...correlate radiologic, pathologic, and clinical findings...and communicate the significance of imaging results to referring physicians. This edition has a new chapter on magnetic resonance imaging and new information on the ACR Ultrasound BI-RADS Lexicon; keloids and hypertrophic scars; cutaneous angiosarcoma; subareolar abscess; columnar alteration with prominent apical snouts and secretions (CAPSS); mucocele-like lesions; cat scratch disease; granulomatous mastitis; and granular cell tumor.

Editorial Review:

She charmed America with her smart, likable, down-to-earth personality as she campaigned for her husband, then vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. She inspired millions as she valiantly fought advanced breast cancer after being diagnosed only days before the 2004 election. She touched hundreds of similarly grieving families when her own son, Wade, died tragically at age sixteen in 1996. Now she shares her experiences in Saving Graces, an incandescent memoir of Edwards’ trials, tragedies, and triumphs, and of how various communities celebrated her joys and lent her steady strength and quiet hope in darker times.

Edwards writes about growing up in a military family, where she learned how to make friends easily in dozens of new schools and neighborhoods around the world and came to appreciate the unstinting help and comfort naval families shared. Edwards’ reminiscences of her years as a mother focus on the support she and other parents offered one another, from everyday favors to the ultimate test of her own community’s strength—their compassionate response to the death of the Edwards’ teenage son, Wade, in 1996. Her descriptions of her husband’s campaigns for Senate, president, and vice president offer a fascinating perspective on the groups, great and small, that sustain our democracy. Her fight with breast cancer, which stirred an outpouring of support from women across the country, has once again affirmed Edwards’ belief in the power of community to make our lives better and richer.

Definitely not upbeat 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In spite of its semi-witty title, and being written in cartoon style, this is not a funny book. The author is very honest, sometimes painfully so, about her reactions to being told she has cancer, how having it affects her relationships with the people in her life, her experience with her treatments, and her thoughts on having cancer in general

The way she copes is to permenently plant herself in front of the television and become obsessed with TV Guide crossword puzzles. Her utimate conclusion is that knowing you are going to die takes all meaning out of life. Memories and past accomplishements are empty of significance, and there is no point in incurring new experiences.

What, she was planning on living for ever? We are all going to die someday and we, some of us, anyway, are bound and determined to make the most of the life we have. As a cancer survivor (so far) myself, I do not recommend this book to anybody looking for humor, hope or cheer.

Editorial Review:

a cartoonist examines her experience with breast cancer in an irreverent and humorous graphic memoir.

How do the experts know? 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The experts and institutions all dismiss the
idea that bra wearing leads to cancer but how do they know or what is their basis for saying that? Can you know anything without a study? And admitedly they don't know what causes it,but they know it isn't bras.

Singer is faulted for lack of rigor in his study. It's just a beginning survey. How would you get funded for a more expanded study? His method was very simple and elegant. He took a large group of women and asked them how many hours a day they spent wearing a bra and found that it was related to the number that developed breast cancer. Those that seldom or never wore one, seldom developed cancer, whereas those who wore one 24/7, a majority developed cancer.
Those who wore one for a lessor amount of time had an intermediate rate. Sure there are contaminating factors but they tend to cancel out in large group studies.

This reminds me of the old studies relating the packs of cigarettes smoked per day to the likelyhood of developing lung cancer.

The problem is that although many women would like to play it safe and comfortable they like the up-lift bras give them and worry it will make them sag eventually to go without one. There may be a solution to both these concerns. A Japanese study found that going braless did not produce
sagging beasts but actually produced more perkiness. And if a bra is worn to work only but taken off around the house, there is only a slight increase in breast cancer. Singer writes,"...women who wear bras twenty-four hours a day have a 125-fold greater chance of getting breast cancer than do women who do not wear bras at all and a 113-fold greater chance of getting breast cancer than do women who wear bras for less than twelve hours daily. This is anywhere from 4 to 12 times greater in significance than the connection between cigarette smoking and lung cancer!"(p.127).

Singer argues that bras excert their harmful effect through tightness
which prevents the flow of the lymphatic fluid from clearing toxins from the breasts.

Editorial Review:

Singer and Grismaijer have collected striking evidence that bra-wearing may be a major cause of breast cancer: women who wear tight-fitting bras 24 hours a day are 125 times more likely to have breast cancer than women who do not wear bras at all. Their interpretation is that tight clothing inhibits the proper functioning of the lymphatic system (an internal network of vessels and nodes that flushes wastes from the body) and leads to a buildup of carcinogenic compounds in the constricted areas. Although their studies are preliminary, still controversial, and definitely need to be followed up with more research, this book should be read by anyone concerned about breast cancer. Possibly a very important book that could save many lives.

Editorial Review:

One out of nine women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. For too long, women have erroneously believed that there is little or nothing they can do to prevent this dread illness. Our major medical efforts are directed toward detecting and treating, rather than preventing, breast cancer.

Professor Jane Plant, one of Britain's most eminent scientists, contracted breast cancer in 1987. When orthodox medicine gave up and she was told she had only three months to live, she used her extensive scientific training and her knowledge of other cultures to find a way to survive. In her research, she was startled to find that in China breast cancer affects far fewer women than in Western countries. Plant considered there could be a dietary trigger for the illness. As Plant continued her research, she became convinced there was a casual link between consumption of dairy products and breast cancer.

In this book, Professor Plant shares the discoveries that allowed her to triumph over breast cancer. With a clear statement of the scientific principles behind her discovery, Professor Plant includes detailed suggestions, including menus and recipes, for ways to alter your diet by eliminating or reducing consumption of many suspected cancer-causing agents, especially dairy products, and replacing them with healthful alternatives.

Editorial Review:

The mortality rate from cancer hasn't changed in 60 years despite the billions invested to find a cure. Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time provides solid, practical advice for preventing cancer by avoiding carcinogens and implementing lifestyle/dietary practices that modify cancer causing factors.

Combining their experience in family medicine and epidemiology with their passion for disease prevention, the authors provide the most up to date and effective advice for preventing cancer from developing in ourselves and our loved ones. Many "how to" examples for preventing cancer by being environmentally aware, avoiding infections, living the proper lifestyle and getting the proper nutrition are provided. Chapter by chapter summaries and listings of the latest cancer prevention web sites are great references. Worksheets assist readers in implementing the advice in very tangible ways, and the recipe collection of cancer avoiding meals is a winner!

"An empowering book from the first page. Health principles and the best in sound research. It will change how you live with simple graces such as removing your shoes, pleasing your body with good taste, keeping yourself environmentally conscious, and relationally wise. Health care from a preventative perspective we all need." -- Gwen MacDonald, M.D., Owner and President of Pediatrics Plus Family

This book covers the spectrum of cancer prevention, and the depth of writing, index and resources enable anyone to find the specific information they're interested in." -- Amy Casey-Paal MPH, Epidemiologist, Minnesota Department of Health Cancer Control Section
