Editorial Review:

Are you tired? Achy? Depressed? Overweight?
You could be suffering from an autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune disease is the third major category of illness in the United States, yet very little is known about the many serious and chronic immune conditions. If you're one of the 50 million Americans suffering from one kind of autoimmune disease-whether it's lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, or Crohn's disease-there's a good chance you'll develop another.

This book can help.

Written by Mary J. Shomon, a well-known patient advocate who was diagnosed with autoimmune disease in 1995, this guide to alternative and natural remedies shows you how to treat the underlying causes of immune system imbalance, not just the symptoms. It contains first-person accounts from doctors, patients, and holistic practitioners, as well as checklists, quizzes, and a proposed recovery plan. In addition, it offers detailed information about:

• The most common autoimmune conditions • The factors that can lead to autoimmune disease • Interpreting your symptoms • Procedures and treatments • Finding the right doctor

Until we find a cure, living with autoimmune disease can be frightening and frustrating. But it doesn't have to be. This valuable guide helps you understand what may be causing the disorder and helps you take the first healthy, natural steps toward correcting it.

Great Help for Pelvic Pain 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great self-help book to heal pelvic pain. The introduction to the pelvic floor musculature with simple diagrams is easy to follow and understand. She describes many disorders that are the result of weakened and dysfunctional muscles, nerves and tendons of the pelvis. A questionnaire starts off the self-help section that is completed monthly to monitor progress and determine whether you are ready to move on to the next section(s) in the book. The stretching chapter in the book provides easy to follow directions and pictures followed by strengthening chapters. A chapter on self massage was also easy to follow. The chapter on nutrition was very basic but a good primer. It was nice to read a book that addresses sexual dysfunction and the importance of sex in our relationships in a professional manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to heal pelvic floor dysfunctions such as urinary incontinence, painful intercourse, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, fecal incontinence, urinary urgency, to name just a few examples.

Editorial Review:

Stop your pelvic pain . . . naturally!

If you suffer from an agonizing and emotionally stressful pelvic floor disorder, including pelvic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, prostatitis, incontinence, or discomfort during sex, urination, or bowel movements, it's time to alleviate your symptoms and start healing--without drugs or surgery. Natural cures, in the form of exercise, nutrition, massage, and self-care therapy, focus on the underlying cause of your pain, heal your condition, and stop your pain forever.

The life-changing plan in this book gets to the root of your disorder with:

  • A stretching, muscle-strengthening, and massage program you can do at home
  • Guidelines on foods that will ease your discomfort
  • Suggestions for stress- and pain-reducing home spa treatments
  • Exercises for building core strength and enhancing sexual pleasure

    Editorial Review:

Rona Berg knows that sometimes women have dry skin. Or tired eyes. Or limp hair. Or a pimple. And as a beauty expert, she knows exactly what to do about it. Drawing on years of covering the beauty industry, working behind the scenes at fashion shows, fixing actresses’ and models’ beauty meltdowns, and learning insider information from hundreds of consultants and make-up artists, Ms. Berg—author of Beauty: The New Basics, with 122,000 copies in print—offers up the best 1,000 tried-and-true tips.

Indexed by problem and solution, Fast Beauty is indispensable, filled with the kinds of advice, ideas, and help that sell millions of women’s magazines a month. Spa tips. Anti-stress tips. The “20-second face,” “the two-minute face,” the “five-minute face.” Innovative remedies: Rub olive oil into dry cuticles to soften them; use honey to get rid of a pimple overnight; to tighten the face temporarily, apply tomato juice (preferably fresh-squeezed) for ten minutes, and for the reverse—if your face is tight from too much sun—apply plain yogurt to the skin and leave on for ten minutes. A full chapter shows how to solve beauty pitfalls caused by hormones at all stages of life; another deals with various problems caused by working out. And for every busy businesswoman, it tells what quick fix to use when heading into an important meeting straight off the red-eye—or heading straight from the office out on a blind date.

    Editorial Review:

With such groundbreaking bestsellers as Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause, Dr. Christiane Northrup is one of today’s most trusted and visionary medical experts. Now she presents her most profound and revolutionary approach to women’s health. . . .

The mother-daughter relationship sets the stage for our state of health and well-being for our entire lives. Because our mothers are our first and most powerful female role models, our most deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves as women come from them. And our behavior in relationships—with food, with our children, with our mates, and with ourselves—is a reflection of those beliefs. Once we understand our mother-daughter bonds, we can rebuild our own health, whatever our age, and create a lasting positive legacy for the next generation.

Mother-Daughter Wisdom introduces an entirely new map of female development, exploring the “five facets of feminine power,” which range from the basics of physical self-care to the discovery of passion and purpose in life. This blueprint allows any woman—whether or not she has children—to repair the gaps in her own upbringing and create a better adult relationship with her mother. If she has her own daughter, it will help her be the mother she has always wanted to be.

Drawing on patient case histories and personal experiences, Dr. Northrup also presents findings at the cutting edge of medicine and psychology. Discover:

•How to lay the nutritional foundation to prevent eating disorders and adult diseases
•The truth about the immunization controversy–and the true meaning of immunity
•How we can change our genetic health legacy
•Why financial literacy is essential to women’s health
•How to foster healthy sexuality and future “love maps” in our daughters
•How to balance independence with caring, and individual growth with family ties

Written with warmth, enthusiasm, and rare intelligence, Mother-Daughter Wisdom is an indispensable book destined to change lives and become essential reading for all women.

4 Keys to Finding Your Lost Libido

Anyone who has stood in a supermarket checkout line has seen all the sexy headlines on women's magazines, touting exciting new ways for readers to drive their men wild in bed or to heighten their own sexual pleasure. These are tantalizing promises, to be sure. But they sorely miss the mark.

The fact is, many women aren't interested in more sex or better sex. They aren't interested in sex at all. They used to be, of course. Over months or even years, their sexual desire all but disappeared. And they can't understand why.

Through years of clinical practice, Andrew Goldstein, M.D., and Marianne Brandon, Ph.D., have worked with scores of clients who aren't satisfied with their sex drives. They've seen how women struggle to open up about this very personal and painful problem. And they've seen how it can erode women's self-esteem and strain intimate relationships.

In Reclaiming Desire, Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Brandon present a self-care version of their highly effective holistic approach to treating low libido.

    Inside you'll find:
    - An exclusive self-test to assess physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health--the four cornerstones of a healthy sex drive

    - Essential information on how major life events like pregnancy, menopause, and divorce can affect a woman's sexual health

    - A range of practical measures, from conventional and herbal medicines to mind-body techniques and lifestyle strategies, that can help rekindle sexual desire

    - Personal stories that draw upon the real-life experiences of women who once struggled with low libido--and emerged with a greater understanding of their sexual selves

Reclaiming Desire also offers a healthy dose of reassurance and encouragement as an antidote to all of the misconceptions about low libido. As you'll learn, a decline in sex drive doesn't automatically happen with age. And while hormones influence sexual desire and response, they don't determine a woman's sexual destiny. Just as important, low libido doesn't necessarily point to a problem in a woman's relationship with her partner. More than likely, she simply has lost touch with her sexual self.

Unlike those magazine headlines, Reclaiming Desire will more than live up to its promise. With this book, you can reclaim your desire--and make your sex life better than ever.

Saved my SLEEP!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am now a happy, WELL-RESTED 40 yr old due to this book (and another book: Natural Hormone Balance For Women by Dr. Uzzi Reiss)
Both of these have saved my LIFE, most importantly my SLEEP!

For the past few years (after having a 3rd child) from age 37 onward, I could no longer fall into sleep, nor get REM/Delta level, and NOTHING would work (except Ambien).

Well now since learning about natural progesterone cream and other important, necessary homones the body may need (and mine did), such as DHEA and Melatonin, I now use all three nearly every night at bedtime: one tiny dab of a natural progesterone cream, 2 sprays (equals 10 mg) of a DHEA spray called Biosom, and 1 mg or less (half the pill) of Melatonin Plus by Schiff (Found at Sam's, it also contains vitamin B6 and L-Theanine very needed additions to helping Melatonin work).

Now I sleep like a baby every night!
    No more Ambien!:)

Buy this book (and the other one I mentioned).

OB/GYN's disappointed me by recommending HRT or even hysterectomy, ALL because I simply had hormone imbalance-related Insomnia and Adrenal Fatigue.

PLEASE check with your doctor/naturopath BEFORE taking any of my above products/steps that work for ME.

Content not advised during depression! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

    Describes Post Partum Depression

WARNING! Depression hurts and those who do suffer depression may not enjoy this because the main content is her struggle downward. The majority of this book is on the downward trending patterns. This is not happy reading. Do not read this if you just had a baby; do not gift this book to a person who you think has post partum depression and you just want them to "see" that depression is treatable. This is definitely NON-pregnancy reading.

If you have never been able to explain the magnitude and self loathing of depression, Brooke has done it for you. She spends a lot of time describing the slippery slope of feeling out of sorts and not very excited into feeling your absolute and unexplainable worst. In the audio version she reads the story herself and it really does get across the stymied feelings of those around her who could not understand what was going on. She should be on top of the world. Instead she felt it was on top of her.

She documents her way through the maze of depression and page after page you keep saying to yourself "And the Doctor was not on to this???". I think that is part of the point of her writing this, normal healthy people can get very serious depression and the people around them do not know how to react and they do not put depression into the mix. They just work around the equation hoping that this will pass. In her case it was never going to pass on its own.

She covers the awful trip back to herself and how as a person she was as perplexed at how to "feel better" as those around her were to have her be better. This is at times a story you want to speed up and skip over more and more of the exhaustive recounting. Again that is the point of the story- depression is an exhaustive journey.

We recommend the audio more that the written word because it has Brook telling her own story and you can feel her emotions as she tells her story. We also recommend that you buy this discounted because it is not a body work that you keep in your collection unless this topic is related to your field. For the average reader: this is a read and pass it along to another book or an ah-ha! reading to explain something that you may have already have gone through. RICH CHICKS specializes in independent reviews to help you invest in the right product for your dollar. We have left many reviews all over this site.

    Editorial Review:

In her bestselling memoir, now in paperback, Brooke Shields shares with the world her deeply personal experience with postpartum depression

When Brooke Shields welcomed her newborn daughter to the world, her joyful expectations were quickly followed by something unexpected -- a crippling depression. In what is sure to strike a chord with the millions of women who suffer from depression after childbirth, Brooke Shields shares how she, too, battled a condition that is widely misunderstood, despite the fact that it affects many new mothers. She discusses the illness in the context of her life, including her struggle to get pregnant, the high expectations she had for herself and that others placed on her as a new mom, and the role of her husband, friends, and family as she struggled to attain her maternal footing in the midst of a disabling depression.

Ultimately, Brooke shares how she found a way out through talk therapy, medication, and time.

Finally some help with dosing of Bioidentical Hormones. This book really does help with adjusting your hormone appliations without running back and forth to see your Dr. or trying to get your Dr. to call you back to discuss an adjustment of you hormones. It really is up to us. My Dr. has not been of much help in keeping my hormones in balance. This book really tells you how and when and where to apply. It has Resources to get your saliva testing done. Some Drs. do not believe in hormone testing as they do not think there are accurate tests. But at least there is a place you get saliva tests and test your self so you know where you are and you can make adjustments based on the test results. Get this book if you are using bio-identical hormones. Well worth the price.
