Editorial Review:

For significant milestones, significant books: first, Our Bodies, Ourselves, then What to Expect When You’re Expecting, and now, Is it Hot in Here? Or is it me? The Complete Guide to Menopause. Written with an uncompromising intelligence and wit by two award-winning Newsweek journalists, Is it Hot in Here? Or is it me? is the essential, comprehensive, up-to-the-minute, deeply optimistic book for the millions of women in their forties-to-sixties.

The menopause transition—so often mysterious—varies greatly from woman to woman. Finally, here is the one book that makes the full scope of it accessible and understood. It covers the role of hormones and the controversy over hormone therapy. The truth about hot flashes . . . and how to deal with one in the middle of a meeting. A top-to-bottom assessment of the aches, pains, and assorted ills that can afflict menopausal women. The impact on sexuality, and how to counteract that wavering libido. (Yes, it’s possible to buy a sex toy without the neighbors—or the children— finding out.) There are chapters on memory (how to protect it), moods (how to ride them out), and sleep (how to get it). And then an entire section on using this period as a springboard to staying healthy, feeling great, and looking beautiful for the next act in your life. A complete approach to losing middle-age weight (and tips on finding jeans that will make you look as if you’ve had a tummy tuck). The essential exercises to keep bones strong. Dealing with dry skin and thinning hair. Habits (and recipes) to begin to encourage heart health now.

Editorial Review:

For women facing decisions about treatment for the symptoms of menopause, the second edition of this landmark work features a new chapter that addresses the latest findings about hormone replacement therapy. Dr. Michele Moore helps patients make informed treatment choices and offers a balanced account of options that range from traditional medical practice to holistic and alternative approaches.

The Menopause Diet 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Don't waste your time on this one. What a HUGE downer to read. It seems that the author has bigger issues than menopause, like chronic negativity. From cover to cover this book is filled with do not eat this, do not buy that, if you eat this you may die of that! Then to add insult to injury, she continues with her personal opinions of different exercise types that can cause injury. Give me a break, I, for one, am not motivated by the SCARED SKINNY tactics of this book. And finally, she actually promotes the use of hormone therapy which in my own physician's opinion may be risky. ENOUGH ALREADY... Back to portion control, good choices, exercise and not living in fear. This book went into the trash, it is not even good enough to recycle...

Another great book 5 out of 5 stars.

Provides great info on what foods causes the tire around your waist. Pretty basic....easy to read.

This book shoots straight from the hip 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is very informative. There is a lot of medical infomation but that's what I was looking for.

Dr. Gillespie is very straight forward so if you don't want to hear the truth about how you body is changing then this isn't the book for you.

Her diet has stopped my blood sugar drops and I've lost a couple of pounds in a week.

The book is a slow read because it's not written to be entertaining but give you the information you need to prevent or get rid or that "menopot."

You’re in the prime of life. As far as you know, menopause could be years away. So why is your body sending you such weird messages?

• Hormone treatment before menopause, including all the new, natural, and low-dose forms that are making this a safe choice for more women

• Herbs, soy, and other alternative therapies that are backed by solid medical research

• Ways to combat cancer fears — and what tests you absolutely must have

Resourceful Guide to Understanding Hormones 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Eldred Taylor has been my doctor for years. And after going through various female changes--I'm now over 40, he recommended that I read this book. I must say that after reading this book, I have a much better understanding of the world of hormones and how they truly affect my life. This book helped me to understand how exercise, diet, and hormones relate to feeling and being healthy. I keep this book handy as a resource guide to refer to it whenever I feel out of balance! I love the highlights or take-home points throughout the chapter.

Editorial Review:

The TaylorÕs revolutionary approach to diagnosing womenÕs illnesses will forever change the healthcare of women all over the world. Previous books about women and hormonal problems have made sweeping generalizations concerning treatment (i.e. women should not take estrogen, all women need estrogen to prevent osteoporosis and heart disease or all women need progesterone, or herbs). Unlike other books written on the subject, this book advocates the use of objective and accurate testing through salivary testing before prescribing treatment. This book provides much needed information that allows patients and doctors to understand the value of saliva testing. Salivary testing is a must for every woman concerned about breast cancer, osteoporosis, infertility, menopause, fibroids, and PMS. Salivary testing allows women to take control of their health! Editorial Review:

Menopausal weight gain is "the most stubborn weight gain you'll ever experience," says Debra Waterhouse in Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell. This book follows her bestselling Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell, customizing the program for women ages 35 to 55. The book is easy to read, makes difficult concepts simple to understand, and has helpful checklists to keep you on track. Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell explains the role of fat cells before and during menopause and why midlife weight gain is such a pervasive problem. A woman's 30 billion fat cells get bigger and "more stubborn" during midlife, explains Waterhouse, because when they detect a lowered estrogen level, they step in to produce more estrogen and get larger as they get more active. Dieting doesn't work; instead of slimming your body, it thins your hair, muscles, skin, bones--and thinking. To combat these effects, Waterhouse explains how to work with your new menopausal physiology to minimize weight gain. You learn strategies of attitude, exercise, eating habits (including dealing with cravings), food choices, and stress management. For example, exercise at midlife fights fatigue, reduces mental sluggishness, improves sleep, stabilizes moods, reduces the severity of hot flashes, strengthens bones, and reduces the risk of breast cancer and heart disease. --Joan Price

Editorial Review:

For nearly as long as women have been around, they have been going through menopause. It is a bodily process as old as human birth, death, and of course, menstruation. Like many normal biological events, menopause was gradually medicalized, and with the rise of pharmaceutical medicine, women and their doctors were convinced that it was an "estrogen deficiency disease" that could be treated by supplementing the body's declining estrogen levels with hormones. By 2002 hormone treatment had been on the market for more than fifty years when doctors and women alike were shocked by the results of a massive clinical trial, the Women's Health Initiative: women taking hormones had more heart attacks, breast cancer, strokes, pulmonary embolisms, and blood clots than women who did not, and patients were left scrambling to find new and sometimes difficult answers to their menopause and midlife health questions.

In The No-Nonsense Guide to Menopause, Barbara Seaman, a legendary figure in the women's health movement, and Laura Eldridge have written a comprehensive, easy-to-use resource that will give you all the information you need to make smart and informed decisions that will put you in control during this time of transition -- medically, psychologically, sexually, and even financially.

With the latest research on everything from hormone replacement therapy to skin creams to preventing osteoporosis, The No-Nonsense Guide to Menopause is the definitive manual on this important subject. You'll find out which changes are expected and natural and which can be a cause for concern; how hormonal shifts can affect your heart, your sex life, and your mood; and what you can do to address these issues. Whether the authors are discussing the risk factors for heart disease, the benefits of lifting weights, or if you should consider a hysterectomy, they offer unbiased, straightforward information and advice with a signature blend of wisdom and sensitivity.

Perhaps most important, you'll learn how to evaluate what you read in magazines, hear on the news, and are told by your doctor, so you can distinguish between solid facts and dubious claims. By learning how to read and evaluate scientific studies and becoming familiar with what goes on behind the scenes in research labs, at doctors' offices, and at pharmaceutical companies, you will be able to become your own advocate. The next time you go to the doctor's office, you will know how to make the most of your visit and leave feeling confident, informed, and in command. There is no one way to experience menopause and no single way to handle the challenges it can present, but as a no-nonsense patient, you will have the tools you need to make decisions that are right for you.

Tells You What Other Women Are Experiencing 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Chapters are short and easy to read. This book deals not only with the technical aspects that most books do, but primarily with particular women's experiences with those various aspects--especially their feelings. This is what is left out of most of the other books. I recommend this book together with a more techinical book. But if you can only buy one book, buy this one instead. The main thing this book left me with was a feeling that instead of menopause being something that will just happen to me, there are a lot of things I can do, in a proactive sense, to manage the menopause. This is the most positive book I have seen on the subject, and helps me decide about all the questions to discuss with my doctor. Without reading this book, instead of being ready with a list of questions for my doctor, I would have passively listened to whatever he said, and thought that was it.

Editorial Review:

Gail Sheehy's landmark bestseller has become the bible for women concerned about menopause. Since The Silent Passage was originally published in the early 1990s, Gail Sheehy, a member of the board of the New York Menopause Research Foundation, has been at the forefront of the newest research on menopause. She has also continued to interview countless women throughout the country on the subject. In this updated and expanded edition, she presents essential new data in chapters on The Perimenopause Panic, Menopause in the Workplace, Estrogen and Brainpower, and New Frontiers in Treatment. Candid, enlightening, inspiring, and witty, with the latest information on everything from early menopause to Chinese medicine and natural remedies, The Silent Passage is an indispensable reference for every woman.
