Editorial Review:

More doctors are recommending natural (also called bio-identical) hormones-because they offer all the advantages of synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT) without the negative side effects or long-term health risks. Unlike synthetic HRT, natural hormones are bio-identical: they match a woman's own hormones exactly and don't interfere with the body's normal hormone production. They are safer and more effective, providing protective benefits that range from alleviating unpleasant symptoms of menopause, perimenopause, and PMS to protecting against osteoporosis, endometrial cancer, and other diseases.

Topics covered include:

- What are natural hormones and how do they work?
- Why are natural hormones better and safer than synthetic HRT drugs?
- Do natural hormones increase the risk for breast cancer?
- Can natural hormones control midlife weight gain?
- Does natural progesterone help alleviate PMS?
- Will natural hormones improve skin?
- How to find the right doctor
- The latest on the recent NIH study

Editorial Review:

For nearly as long as women have been around, they have been going through menopause. It is a bodily process as old as human birth, death, and of course, menstruation. Like many normal biological events, menopause was gradually medicalized, and with the rise of pharmaceutical medicine, women and their doctors were convinced that it was an "estrogen deficiency disease" that could be treated by supplementing the body's declining estrogen levels with hormones. By 2002 hormone treatment had been on the market for more than fifty years when doctors and women alike were shocked by the results of a massive clinical trial, the Women's Health Initiative: women taking hormones had more heart attacks, breast cancer, strokes, pulmonary embolisms, and blood clots than women who did not, and patients were left scrambling to find new and sometimes difficult answers to their menopause and midlife health questions.

In The No-Nonsense Guide to Menopause, Barbara Seaman, a legendary figure in the women's health movement, and Laura Eldridge have written a comprehensive, easy-to-use resource that will give you all the information you need to make smart and informed decisions that will put you in control during this time of transition -- medically, psychologically, sexually, and even financially.

With the latest research on everything from hormone replacement therapy to skin creams to preventing osteoporosis, The No-Nonsense Guide to Menopause is the definitive manual on this important subject. You'll find out which changes are expected and natural and which can be a cause for concern; how hormonal shifts can affect your heart, your sex life, and your mood; and what you can do to address these issues. Whether the authors are discussing the risk factors for heart disease, the benefits of lifting weights, or if you should consider a hysterectomy, they offer unbiased, straightforward information and advice with a signature blend of wisdom and sensitivity.

Perhaps most important, you'll learn how to evaluate what you read in magazines, hear on the news, and are told by your doctor, so you can distinguish between solid facts and dubious claims. By learning how to read and evaluate scientific studies and becoming familiar with what goes on behind the scenes in research labs, at doctors' offices, and at pharmaceutical companies, you will be able to become your own advocate. The next time you go to the doctor's office, you will know how to make the most of your visit and leave feeling confident, informed, and in command. There is no one way to experience menopause and no single way to handle the challenges it can present, but as a no-nonsense patient, you will have the tools you need to make decisions that are right for you.

Everyone else raves but I really really didn't like this book. Here are my reasons:
- he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved. I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies.
- he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery. I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book.
- the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go. I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills
- he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills. I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer.

I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive and compassionate book covers everything women need to know about the natural and treatable effects of perimenopause, the changes that occur in the decade before menopause. Steven R. Goldstein, M.D., one of Americas foremost authorities on perimenopause, clearly explains what women can expect when their estrogen levels begin to fluctuate and describes the natural remedies and state-of-the-art medical treatments that can give women the upper hand.

Editorial Review:

It’s no stretch to say that the information about hormone health, menopause, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is considerable, confusing, and often intimidating. But the consequence of ignoring hormone health are pretty scary, too. With so many choices and so much riding on them, what’s a woman to do? The authors of this book have spent many years researching age-related health problems, especially the effects of hormones on health. In this workbook, they put all of the most up-to-date, scientific knowledge about hormone research in one place and use it to help you decide the best treatment available for your particular health situation.

Using extensive and interactive checklists, symptom lists, and self-assessments, the book helps you track symptoms. Then it takes you through the medical and non-medical treatments available, including human-identical hormones (the new HRT), lifestyle and dietary changes, supplements, and other non-HRT treatments. Without necessarily advocating one treatment over another, the book helps you decide which approaches are best for your particular situation.

This is a great source of no nonsense information. Dr. Thacker discusses all sides of the hormone replacement issue. I was lost in all the confusing data that women deal with, when faced with the "change". This book put it in perspective for me, and I feel that I made an informed choice. Thanks Dr. Thacker.

She also clues us in on everything from antiaging skin and hair care to the hottest news in midlife nutrition (including an anti-hot flash diet!), divine new relaxation techniques, optimal exercise and midlife dieting secrets, and how to put the kick back into your sex life.

Tens of millions of women will hit forty in the next decade--and millions cross the threshold into menopause every year. This is the definitive guide for living well--no prescription required!
