Editorial Review:

More doctors are recommending natural (also called bio-identical) hormones-because they offer all the advantages of synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT) without the negative side effects or long-term health risks. Unlike synthetic HRT, natural hormones are bio-identical: they match a woman's own hormones exactly and don't interfere with the body's normal hormone production. They are safer and more effective, providing protective benefits that range from alleviating unpleasant symptoms of menopause, perimenopause, and PMS to protecting against osteoporosis, endometrial cancer, and other diseases.

Topics covered include:

- What are natural hormones and how do they work?
- Why are natural hormones better and safer than synthetic HRT drugs?
- Do natural hormones increase the risk for breast cancer?
- Can natural hormones control midlife weight gain?
- Does natural progesterone help alleviate PMS?
- Will natural hormones improve skin?

Editorial Review:

Fitness expert Kathy Smith has written a sensitive and smart book about what she calls the "half-time bell," also known as menopause. Using as examples her own hot flashes, raw nerves, restless nights, and memory misfires, Smith outlines an upbeat, trifaceted program for "taking charge of menopause." She addresses the three themes of midlife transition: hormonal symptoms such as mood swings and night sweats; the need to reflect and create a deeper meaning; and long-term health issues, specifically heart disease and bone loss. Each theme is explored using examples from Smith's experience, questionnaires, self-tests, journal writing, and relevant up-to-date information. Smith details dozens of strategies for taking charge--from herbal remedies to hormone replacement, from illustrated strength training workouts to Kegel exercises to keep your sex life active. Her optimistic and sensible suggestions deliver on her promise that menopause can be more than just a set of symptoms. --Barbara Mackoff

I love Danna Demetre! She is an awesome author. This is a great book about menopause and anything related to it. She also has a great book called Scale Down.

Editorial Review:

In a culture that glorifies youth and perfect bodies, women typically don't celebrate menopause. But Danna Demetre's latest book reveals that this season of life can actually be the most rewarding. Entwining nuggets of humor with spiritual insight, The Heat Is On tells how women can effectively deal with common problems including hot flashes, weight gain, and forgetfulness. It addresses important issues such as hormone replacement therapy, proper lifestyle nutrition, health and beauty, and depression. Demetre also provides scriptural principles and encouragement, as well as evaluations and questions for personal application. Whether readers are married or single, approaching mid-life or in the midst of it, The Heat Is On proves that women can embrace "The Change" rather than dread it.

I loved this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is an extremely funny, yet frank book written for women either entering that "time of their lives" or women who are in the midst of "change". I laughed, I cried and I loved every word of this book! Written by a woman with a heart for others, Mrs. Snyder informs and helps the reader sort through myth and fact with tenderness and humor.

Editorial Review:

Millions of women enter what is called “mid–life” (over age 40) every year. Speaker, writer, and “Sister in the Journey” Ronna Snyder shares how these women can avoid a crisis and discover instead a joyful beginning of a richer and deeper way to live.

Ronna found herself going from doctor to doctor trying to find someone who could tell her what was wrong with her. She heard words like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and depression before finally hearing a specialist on the radio listing all of her symptoms and realizing that she was experiencing the beginning of menopause.

With all the changes this time of life brings—kids leaving home, parents needing care, new marriage roles, etc.—the turmoil and addition of the physical and emotional effects of menopause can seem overwhelming. Ronna writes with humor, faith, and transparency to help other women face down their fears and live with passion and fullness.

Editorial Review:

Tales from the Vine: Juicy Tomatoes Talk About Being Female, Over Fifty, and in Full Bloom

Juicy Tomatoes introduces you to a group of women who will happily plead guilty to being female and over fifty. That's because they know that being a fifty-plus woman means having wisdom, passion, and savvy to spare, and that the second half of life can be just as fun and fulfilling as the first. They've seen through the myths that say an over-fifty woman can't have good sex or a new career and they've forged ahead despite societal pressure to quietly step down. These juicy tomatoes are redefining what it means to be a woman over fifty and blazing a trail that promises to change the culture and the lives of those green tomatoes who come after them. Juicy Tomatoes is a refreshing and revealing look at how women meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities that come with age. These stories from life beyond fifty are funny, poignant, inspiring, and unflinchingly honest.

"Written with insight, humor, and a 'we're getting older so we may as well enjoy it' spirit, Juicy Tomatoes perfectly captures the real issues and essence of midlife for women." - Susan Evans and Joan Avis, authors of The Women Who Broke All the Rules: How the Choices of a Generation Changed Our Lives

"Juicy Tomatoes is one of those books you'll read and then give to all your women friends. It's insightful, optimistic, wise, and yes, funny. Susan Swartz is telling us things we all need to know about ourselves." - Robin Beeman, author of A Parallel Life and Other Stories and A Minus Tide

Editorial Review:

Some 38 million girls were born in the United States between 1946 and 1964, and now about 2 million of them each year are entering the menopausal phase of life. But these Baby Boomers are not docile, do-as-they-are-told, ask-no-questions women. They insist on full information, options, and participation in the decision-making process regarding how they will navigate this potentially challenging phase. In this breakthrough book, Dona Caine-Francis offers a reader-friendly primer on everything women need to know to remain physically, emotionally, and sexually vibrant before, during and after menopause. A certified sex therapist and psychiatric nurse practitioner, Caine-Francis challenges women to consider the menopausal years a time of opportunity, a chance to seize the day and "reinvent" the self in three dimensions--physically, emotionally, and sexually. *This book, be forewarned, contains adult material. Special features here include vignettes from therapy sessions for menopausal women and their partners, explanations of the five myths of menopause, a review of hormone therapy of all kinds, complementary and alternative medicine, insights into romance at midlife, and a chapter devoted to partners of these women to help them share an understanding and offering suggestions to keep the fires flamed. Strategies for sexual wellbeing of menopausal women may otherwise and elsewhere be neglected, but Caine-Francis provides a focus to such strategies and offers practical solutions to enhance sexual connections with partners.

Brilliant book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is exactly the book my wife has been searching for for some time. It explains in very clear language the reasons for the previously confused series of moods and emotions. She is thrilled with it and now has a more relaxed response to the changes taking place at this stage of her life.

Editorial Review:

This guide through the often turbulent storms of menopause and the years leading up to it gives women answers they can trust and apply to their lives. Dr. Eaker combines the best medical information available with biblical wisdom to help women handle the natural changes occurring in their lives. His 20 years of medical practice allow him to speak with authority as well as compassion as he offers options and solutions, encouraging women to actively participate in their health care. Topics of concern such as exercise, diet, nutrition, and osteoporosis are addressed as part of a healthy lifestyle. The book includes discussion of PMS and perimenopause, as well as menopause, making it a must-have for women from 30 to 60.
