A book for our times 5 out of 5 stars.

Finally, a resource that gets to the point! Parents will love it- kids will wonder what hit them. In a world of excess and overindulgence, Caffrey shows us how to become parents again. In a world lacking common sense, she demonstrates an abundance of it. It is refreshing to be reminded that we have a responsibility to raise independent young men and women who will feel the need to make contributions to the world because they have a sense of pride, not entitlement!

Editorial Review:

Written for the lowest common denominator 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I read the rest of the reviews of this book and of one of the others by the same authors (The Birth Book). I am fairly disappointed in both books, and wish I had purchased other titles.

Both books are written at about the 8th grade level, and are, frankly, rather cloying in their tone. The authors seem to have very little respect for the intelligence of their audience, which I find irritating. Some advice offered in the 4th/5th month chapters includes "If you're having trouble getting your husband to be interested in you or the baby while you're pregnant," one chapter chirpily suggests a range of options, such as "encouraging him to exercise with you, since he's investing in his future Little Leaguer" or "the fifth month is a great time to get maternity lingerie and set up a photoshoot!" (*gag*)

Periodically, the authors drop the third-person, instructive tone, and incorporate first-person perspectives from unattributed women about this or that. I'm not sure if this is meant to seem real and unforced, but the lack of any names after these comments makes me wonder just how real these responses actually are. Then, again, the authors also occasionally diverge into chirpy little he said/she said segments. For example: She says "Oh, we had 'laying on hands' time every night starting the fifth month with all our kids. My husband would touch my stomach for twenty minutes and talk to my stomach, so he got to bond with the baby early!" He says: "at first I felt odd talking to someone I wouldn't meet for months, but now I wouldn't trade this SENSUAL experience for anything in the world."

It's a sad thing when the authors feel they need to couch an *emotional* experience like that one as a "sensual" one. Sensual, while it can certainly mean simply 'of the senses,' tends to mean 'sexual' in American society. Dropping this word into such an unsual setting almost comes off like, well, using sensuality to sell any other idea, from beer to cars or anything else. Do they think so little of their audience, that *sensuality* is the only thing that will sell us on emotionally bonding with a child to be? Sheesh.

To be fair, there *is* some good information in each chapter, if you have the patience to mine for it. The stretches and exercises offered, for example, in the 4th/5th month chapter are decently illustrated and explained.

I will probably finish reading mine, and then donate it to the library.

Editorial Review:

A definitive guide for expectant mothers, organized in month-by-month chapters covers topics ranging from the emotional effects of pregnancy and bodily changes to fetal development and what to expect during delivery. Simultaneous. 200,000 first printing."

Good information but sexist 2 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed the information in the book, extremely helpful for getting your family on track nutritionally. I was very disappointed in a book written in 2006 reinforcing such rigid gender stereotypes. In the food shopping with your kids section, Dr. Sears tells his son that "the dark green one will help you run really fast." he then tells his daughter that "it will give you prettier hair and sharper eyes." Come on! This is ridiculous! It's the 21st century and we still have people telling our boys to be strong and our girls to be pretty?! I would expect better from Dr. Sears.

Best for you & Your Family / Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood... 5 out of 5 stars.

I first read this book from our local library. Loved it so much - I bought it as a reference. It is packed with life changing easy to read information to improve your and your family's food habits. A good portion of American health problems stems from our use of processed and trans fat laden foods. What can we do to make changes to give our families a better chance at life? We do not have to buy and feed our families this junk! Read the book to learn how to reverse damage and improve your and your family's health. Your gut will thank you. Behaviors will improve or will be eliminated in ADD children by improving nutrition. Read for scientific basis.
Debunking fad diets Dr. Sears (with support from many other Dr. Sears), informs reader of a healthy life change of eating. This does not mean removing the joy of eating. But it does offer ways to reduce risk of cancer, diabetes etc. This book also includes 11 ways to feed growing brains - a must for all parents! Very good informative reading!! Thank you Dr. Sears and family! Happy reading.

Editorial Review:

Most children are afraid of the dark. Some fear monsters under the bed. But 10 percent of children have excessive fears and worries--phobias, separation anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder--that can hold them back and keep them from fully enjoying childhood. If your child suffers from any of these forms of anxiety, the program in this book offers practical, scientifically proven tools that can help.

Now in its second edition, Helping Your Anxious Child has been expanded and updated to include the latest research and techniques for managing child anxiety. You'll learn how to help your child overcome intense fears and worries and find out how to relieve anxious feelings while parenting with compassion.

  • Help your child practice "detective thinking" to recognize irrational worries
  • What to do when your child becomes frightened
  • How to gently and gradually expose your child to challenging situations
  • Help your child learn important social skills

I borrowed this book from the library - 3 times now. I need a copy for my shelf to re-read once in a while. I am a home-school mom with a difficult child (he is proud of it), and I also teach a co-op class of teenagers. I began applying techniques as I learned them with results that were surprising and quick. I could imagine the little cogs in their brains turning on the light in their eyes - if you are a teacher, you know how exciting that is!

As a Christian raising Christian children, I agree that the parent should have the final say-so in any given situation concerning their child. After all, they are ultimately responsible for their child's upbringing, well being, and even their actions in some cases. However, helping a child come to the correct conclusion themselves is not "walking on eggshells", it is more difficult than that. It is helping them grow into adults that can make good decisions and think through problems - a priceless skill that is difficult to teach.

Oddly enough, the techniques in this book helped give me more control as an authority figure, not less. I like this book because I can quickly pick it up and read what I need to, then get back to teaching.

If I may, a book that would work hand-in-hand with this one, but more in discipline (not punishment), is "The Heart of Anger" by Priolo. Both books have helped me teach and grow my willful son with love and direction.

Editorial Review:

The leading experts on parent-child communication show parents and teachers how to motivate kids to learn and succeed in school.

Using the unique communication strategies, down-to-earth dialogues, and delightful cartoons that are the hallmark of their multimillion-copy bestseller How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish show parents and teachers how to help children handle the everyday problems that interfere with learning.

This breakthrough book demonstrates how parents and teachers can join forces to inspire kids to be self-directed, self-disciplined, and responsive to the wonders of learning.

Scary But Necessary Reading 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My first (and only) birth was quite horrifying. After being induced because my contractions slowed the contractions became very painful, after 18 hours I asked for an epidural. The resident put the tube in wrong and the epidural didn't work properly, immobilizing my legs, but leaving the horrific contractions. After 30 hours the midwife broke my bag of waters and after 36 hours I had a fever and my son's heart rate was becoming erratic. They put me in for an emergency C-section, but gave the anesthesia through the same tube as the epidural. Well, it didn't work properly, and I felt almost everything during the 45 minute c-section, so long because my son was stuck and the doctor stopped midway to do a "cease and assess" and to formally complain about the overseeing anesthesiologist.

So! Bad things that you are totally unprepared for can happen! And while this book IS completely biased, it is better to know about all of the possibilities and be mentally prepared for them rather than be blindsided by them. If you are an intelligent woman/couple you can take from this book what it offers: perspective. It will also help you understand what you may and may not want to do during those "informed decision" times they tell you so much about during birthing classes. Yeah, you make the decisions, you can always ask for more information if you need it. Well, what they don't tell you is that if you ask your doctor, your doctor is biased, so if you don't do your own research going in you will do whatever your doctor says because it is the only opinion you have, besides your own, which seems meaningless and naive next to a doctor's recommendation.

Read it, be scared for a little while, and then know you are going into your birth with more information. I am pregnant again, I found that this book helped me decide what kind of physician I wanted to go with. My husband is very against home birth, and I understand his fears, he was traumatized by the first birth, too, he feels that we should still be in a hospital "just in case." So, this book helped me choose a doctor that understands that I want a "home birth" in a hospital. I hope it will help you, too.

Editorial Review:

A groundbreaking narrative investigation of childbirth in the age of machines, malpractice, and managed care, Pushed presents the complete picture of maternity care in America. From inside the operating room of a hospital with a 44% Cesarean rate to the living room floor of a woman who gives birth with an illegal midwife, Block exposes a system in which few women have an optimal experience. Pushed surveys the public health impact of routine labor inductions, C-sections, and epidurals, but also examines childbirth as a women’s rights issue: Do women even have the right to choose a normal birth? Is that right being upheld? A wake-up call for our times, Block’s gripping research reveals that while emergency obstetric care is essential, we are overusing medical technology at the expense of maternal and infant health.

A Great Guide for Conscious Parents 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I just finished "Raising Baby Green" and found it to be informative - but not preachy - providing practical advice to help us make decisions that will not only help raise our baby-to-be in a more healthy manner, but also help the environment itself in the process. Dr. Greene is right on with his theory that our health and the planet's are interwoven - and it's great to do things that accomplish both!

Editorial Review:

In this illustrated and easy-to-use guide, noted pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene, a leading voice of the green baby movement, advises parents how to make healthy green choices for pregnancy, childbirth, and baby care—from feeding your baby the best food available to using medicines wisely. Consumer advocate Jeanette Pavini includes information for making smart choices and applying green principles to a whole new universe of products from zero-VOC paints for the nursery, to pure and gentle lotions for baby’s delicate skin, to the eco-friendly diapers now in the marketplace, as well as specific recommendations for hundreds of other products.

Classic Names for your baby...
Are you looking for just the right name for your new baby? Perhaps you would like something unusual or something classic? A Is For Atticus is chocked full of classic names. I was surprised that neither my name, nor my husband's, nor any of my children's names were listed in this book. I suppose I was not imaginative enough. I loved many of the names listed and, of course, hated several. Before naming your baby, take a look at A Is For Atticus; you just might find the perfect name.

Editorial Review:

Pick up a celebrity magazine and you'll see that the art of naming babies has reached new heights of self-expression, with recent choices like Shiloh, Sailor, Apple, and notably, Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q. Hewson. Baby namers today want monikers that reflect something personal. Where better to draw inspiration than the books you cherish and the characters you love? A IS FOR ATTICUS mines the classics for the best names and brings them all into one volume. Unlike massive baby name books, which offer endless, dry lists with cursory dictionary definitions, each of the carefully selected names (including Beckett after the Irish playwright Samuel Beckett and Esme from J.D. Salinger's For Esme with Love and Squalor) is fully profiled in a fun, savvy, info-packed listing that includes a name's meaning, uniqueness, modern appeal, and cultural significance. Helpful sidebars guide you to the perfect name for your perfect baby.

Editorial Review:

A breakthrough parenting book that redefines the meaning of “geek”—and inspires parents to free themselves and their kids from the ‘culture of cool.’

In a world of superficial values, peer pressure, and out-of-control consumerism, the world needs more GEEKs: Genuine, Enthusiastic, Empowered Kids. Today’s ‘culture of cool’ has changed the way kids grow up. Rather than enjoying innocent childhoods while developing strong, authentic characters, today’s kids can become cynical—even jaded—as they absorb the dangerous messages and harmful influences of a dominant popular culture that encourages materialism, high-risk behaviors, and a state of pseudo-adulthood.

Author and mother of four Marybeth Hicks suggests an alternative: bringing up geeks. In this groundbreaking book, she shows parents how they can help their children gain the enthusiasm to pursue their passions, not just the latest fashions; the confidence to resist peer pressure and destructive behaviors; the love of learning that helps them excel at school and in life; and the maturity to value family as well as friends, as well as make good moral decisions.

With a foundation like that, kids will grow up to be the coolest adults.
