long on psychology, short on practicality 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Emotional Life of a Toddler is a good book for you if you're interested in the attachment theory or attachment parenting viewpoint of toddler psychology, and this book does read like a psychology text. It offers some insight into the whys, which will help you understand your toddler as a whirlwind of emotion and contradiction; however, the book does not offer any hows for living day-to-day with your tot. Therefore, if you are looking for practical advice and tips, skip this book and head to Toddler 411, Pocket Parent, No Cry Discipline Solution, or the dozen of other books that address toddler behavior.

Wow! Parents of toddlers: GET this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been a great resource to me. As my husband was deployed overseas I suddenly became a "single parent" to a toddler...I was dealing with "normal" toddler behaviors, as well as separation anxiety. "The Emotional Life of the Toddler" has opened my eyes, given me insight into my child's personality and helped to make me feel less stressed by knowing these behaviors are characteristic of a toddler! Grab it up if you are struggling or want to better uderstand your position as a parent of a toddler! :)

Editorial Review:

Although a number of books discuss the physical and cognitive abilities of the toddler, Lieberman's is the first to examine the varied and intense emotional life of children from ages 1 to 3. Drawing on her decades of research and clinical practice, the author addresses a multitude of commonly asked questions, including "Why is 'no' so often a toddler's favorite response?"

Editorial Review:

Do you feel that your family is not what it used to be, or what it has the potential to be? Do you worry that the parenting decisions you're making today may be scarring your child for life? Do you sometimes feel you are in a tug-of-war with the world over who will shape your child's values and beliefs?

With Family First: Your Step-by-Step Plan for Creating a Phenomenal Family, Dr. Phil offers a new classic on family life -- and gives parents real answers and a plan for being the most positive and effective parents possible. Starting right now, you can begin to make realistic choices and take day-to-day actions that can make your family phenomenal. You must decide that you will lead your family with strength and love and that peace and joy are not just for the people next door or on TV. They're for your family.

In Family First, Dr. Phil gives it to parents straight: even in this fast-paced world your family should be the center of your life and your child's life. Parenting is the most important and noble act you will ever undertake, yet American families are threatened like never before from the inside as well as the outside -- many of us fight too much, don't get involved enough in our children's lives, or get bogged down in life's daily struggles instead of keeping our eye on the big picture of our family's well-being.

Dr. Phil has been working with families for over twenty-five years to help them repair the fissures that have fractured their home lives. In Family First, he provides a proven action plan to help parents determine the strengths and weaknesses of their parenting style. His 7 Tools for Purposeful Parenting cover the most important elements for any parent: parenting for success -- for the purpose of raising cooperative, caring, and competent children. Exercises, scripts, assessments, solutions for specific problems, and precise directions for implementing the steps you need to take are all included in this landmark work.

Dr. Phil shows parents how to make changes now -- how to put a stop to your children's tantrums; talk to them about peer pressure or self-esteem; instill values like integrity, honesty, and respect for other people; and bring order back to your house. If you want your child to have a happy, fulfilled life, you must open your eyes to the crucial role you play in his or her development.

Most important, Dr. Phil's new book offers you and your family hope -- for a phenomenal home life now, and a productive, fulfilling future for your children. As Dr. Phil says, you are not just raising children, you are also raising adults, and everything you do today impacts what kind of adult your child will become. You are building the future.

Editorial Review:

Breastfeeding is natural, but it’s not always easy. It is the biological norm, but it is not the cultural norm. By learning the seven basic principles in this book, mothers can dramatically increase their likelihood of success and make breastfeeding the enjoyable experience it should be. The seven laws taught in this book are easy for mothers to understand and are sure to help them avoid some of the pitfalls that they might otherwise face.

The seven principles include: 1. Babies Have the Urge to Self-Attach 2. Use the Power of Skin-to-Skin: A Baby’s Natural Habitat 3. Breastfeed Ad Lib 4. Reach for the Comfort Zone 5. Expect Cluster Nursing 6. More Milk Out = More Milk Made 7. Babies Outgrow Breastfeeding

The book also addresses how to solve common problems and deal with special situations such as breast reductions and babies with special needs. The authors describe some of the social, psychological, and cultural reasons why breastfeeding is not currently the norm, and what this implies for mothers. In all, this is an easy-to-use breastfeeding resource for new mothers, which includes all the latest research and techniques used by those in the lactation field.

Editorial Review:

DESCRIPTION: America's favorite pediatric experts turn their attention to the hottest topic in parenting--solving babies' sleep problems--in a definitive book that offers immediate results. For every parent who's ever been deprived of sleep by a restless infant or toddler, now there's hope. This much-needed addition to the Sears Parenting Library is the comprehensive, reassuring, solution-filled sleep resource that virtually every American family will want to own. Nighttime separation anxiety, new breastfeeding habits, and an increase in adult sleep problems have made babies' sleep habits a growing concern in recent years. The Searses offer solutions. Instead of espousing the kind of "one-method-fits-all" approach advocated in other parenting books, the Searses teach parents how to match the nighttime temperament of their baby to their own lifestyle. The authors draw on important new infant sleep research from the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, as well as on their own personal experience as parents of children with a wide range of sleep habits. They also offer a detailed critique of the myriad new devices and ballyhooed techniques that promise to deliver safer and better infant sleep. THE BABY SLEEP BOOK provides parents with the practical tools they need to help the entire family sleep better.

Wonderful resource 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Although I already have two children, this book has already been helpful in preparing for the arrival of our twins. People keep telling me how difficult or even impossible it is to nurse multiples and this is giving me the confidence to stick to it.

Minimally interesting/helpful 2 out of 5 stars.

This book was not as good as some others I read. And it was obviously geared a lot towards brestfeeding.

Editorial Review:

A mother of multiple babies may find herself wondering if she can produce enough milk, how to coordinate feedings, and if breastfeeding is even an option for her. The simple answer: Yes! In the third revised edition of Mothering Multiples, author Karen Kerkhoff Gromada offers valuable information with an emphasis on breastfeeding and attachment-style parenting. All aspects of caring for multiple babies are addressed, including possible complications of pregnancy, preparing for a multiple birth, coping with newborns who might need to spend time in a NICU, establishing a milk supply for multiple babies, adjusting as a couple, and caring for toddler multiples.

Best Parenting Book I've Read in a Long Time 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When I had my first child 5 years ago I began amassing quite a library of Parenting books. I have to admit that being a committed attachment parent I was alittle skeptical as to whether or not this book could add to my knowledge. I can't speak more highly of a parenting book. It really explains child behavior and needs in a way that gave me SO many Aha's. She strikes a wonderful balance between parent's needs and children's needs while at the same time being very straight forward about what so many kids aren't getting emotionally in today's world. I'm anxious to find a support group locally that espouses her ideas. In the meantime I've once again shifted my parenting methods and I'm trying to give my child more of what she really needs - Connection!

Editorial Review:

"Connection Parenting" is based on author Pam Leo's seven week parenting series, "Meeting the Needs of Children," that she has been teaching for over sixteen years. The premise is that a strong parent-child bond is the key to children's optimal human development and our most effective parenting tool. Connection Parenting is a proactive approach to parenting that supports parents and caregivers in creating and maintaining the strong bonds children need to thrive.

A must have for EVERY parent 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a mini preview of a parenting method that is amazing. Love and Logic WORKS!! It does not matter the age of the child or behavior of the child...ADHD, to sweet angel. I have used this parenting method on my 10 month old and it works. My sister-in-law introduced me to Love & Logic before I was even a parent to start preparing. I read this book over and over again, along with the many other resources Love & Logic provides. Look up the other books and get them, it will be worth every penny...it will be priceless knowledge!!

Editorial Review:

I have two addictions - kids and psychology. It's pretty easy to figure out why I grew addicted to kids, but with psychology it's less obvious. I became addicted to psychology because I grew up learning how to use power, and I finally got tired of fighting with everybody. In place of power, I'm suggesting some practical and usable tools for parents and teachers that are adapted from formal psychological concepts. I offer them as suggestions. You may chew on all of them, and you don't have to swallow a single one of them whole. I'm not trying to make you feel guilty. I'm not trying to tell you what you're doing wrong with your children. I simply want to share some psychological techniques that raised the quality of my life dramatically. I also want to do this because, for me, sharing these ideas is fun!

A lifesaver.... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not well schooled in herbs or home remedies, but this book was a tremendous help to me during my last two pregnancies. There are not just herbal concoctions, but simple, common-sense solutions for everything from pain to depression to lactation issues. When I was struggling with what might have been a premature birth, I consulted this book and was able to halt my contractions, and afterwards continued a healthy, full-term pregnancy. The knowledge you'll find in these pages is priceless.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I work in a health food store and pregnant women, and women with small children ask me all the time about herbal advice for them- something impossible to find.(Usually at the advice of their doctor) I always remind them that I'm not a doctor and anything they do is at their own risk. That said, what I am is someone who researches herbs and vitamins constantly, and obsessively reads about the side effects and interactions of natural medicine. Because of this book's warnings about herbs, I have informed hundreds of pregnant women about herbs they should be careful with- saffron, parsley, etc. Susun Weed will recommend mild herbs scientifically known for their gentle effectiveness. Also, her advice tends to actually work and have the advantage of thousands of years of experience concerning side effects under its' belt.(And real science- real research done by doctors/scientists- search the herbs recommended in studies done by "The Lancet" for example) Do you want to take ginger tea for your nausea or a prescription?? Well, they're both potentially dangerous-not just the herb. And that's a fact-yeah, herbs can kill you-everyone knows this-and so can drugs-so people should educate themselves about the side effects of EVERYTHING they put into their bodies. When a doctor says a drug is "safe", they don't mean harmless, they mean that the good outweighs the bad or the drug is "relatively safe'. Eating licorice everyday is dangerous...saffron could kill you...

Nothing new here 1 out of 5 stars.
36 of 75 people found this review helpful.

This book does not stray an inch from the usual 'Raising Daughters: For Dumb***es' formula, which consists of the following:

1) Pop-science involving the brain and hormones is used to 'confirm' the most banal stereotypes about females. If you've heard the ones about how they are supposedly all more 'empathetic' and 'relational' than males, you have heard the basic premise of this book. The author even mentions something about how she believes that stereotypes 'usually hold truth'.*

2) The sort of trite parenting advice that was once called 'common sense' but is now called 'marketable'. Plenty of tiresome and unenlightening 'real-world examples' are used as padding to make up for the book's lack of anything that can be called substance.

* Indeed -- but only if one doesn't bother to look any further.

In short: don't be a sucker. Hopefully this review will be of help.

Editorial Review:

Mary Pipher told us about the problems girls face in Reviving Ophelia; now in Girls Will Be Girls, JoAnn Deak gives us the solutions. In a work thats as relevant and important as Raising Cain, Deak offers a comprehensive road map to the many emotional and physical challenges girls of all ages face in todays changing world. Renowned for her knowledge of what makes girls ages 6 to 16 tick, Deak brings together stories and lessons from more than 20 years as a school psychologist, and introduces original concepts as a framework to help parents better understand their daughters.

Editorial Review:

Introducing the only clinically proven program—steeped in ancient Chinese healing traditions—that has enabled hundreds of infertile couples to conceive.

At Wu’s Healing Center in San Francisco, miracles are happening. Women and their partners come to the clinic—often from across the country-- to fulfill a passionately held yet fragile dream: to conceive and deliver the healthy baby that mainstream doctors have told them they cannot have. Using traditional Chinese medical techniques, sometimes integrated with Western fertility treatments, Dr. Angela Wu is helping these couples experience the miracle of birth.

In this book, Dr. Wu details a proven 6-part self-care regimen that helps create the internal harmony and balance vital to conception. Her techniques not only enhance the results and reduce the side effects of in vitro and other Western fertility treatments, they also shorten labor and speed postpartum recovery. Babies benefit too, adopting regular sleep patterns more quickly and getting sick less frequently.

At a time when one in five U.S. couples is struggling with fertility problems, this practical and uplifting volume, filled with the inspirational stories of Dr. Wu’s grateful patients, will be a godsend.
