Editorial Review:

Communicate with babies -- even before they can speak.

Before a baby can talk and before a toddler can say completely understandable words, they have important things to say. Babies and children are often more interested in connecting with parents or other caregivers than playing with their toys.

The Baby Signing Book uses American Sign Language, which is ideal for babies and toddlers because:

  • The ability of babies to understand what they see develops well before their ability to understand what they hear.
  • The ability of a baby to speak develops between the ages of 12 and 18 months, while the ability to use American Sign Language develops between 6 and 12 months.
  • Babies understand what they see much earlier than typically expected, and are able to sign well before they are able to talk.

The Baby Signing Book teaches parents 300 developmentally appropriate American Sign Language signs. With clear instructions for every sign, memory aid, song and game, the learning in this program is easy to follow and, most important, fun for all. Language milestones are charted throughout the book so progress can be charted. The book also features a variety of visual highlights that emphasize key concepts and interesting tips.

Adults can customize a program according to the family's needs and aspirations. With the dictionary of 300 symbols, this handbook is clearly the most user-friendly and comprehensive baby signing book available.

Editorial Review:

The Secret Language of Relationships adopts the format of its bestselling predecessor, The Secret Language of Birthdays, and the compendious collection of combinations that follows proves the book's assertion that "A relationship is a rather mysterious and amazing third entity, one that can come to lead an existence independent of the will or desire of its two partners.... in certain cases a relationship can prove far stronger than either individual, leading us to believe that a certain kind of synergy is at work."

Well-organized, packed with fascinating "personality" information, and replete with snapshots (on every page) of famous couples--whether colleagues, spouses, or lovers--The Secret Language of Relationships is also simple to use. A glance at the two-page chart at the beginning of the book determines your birthday "period." Next, find the period of the person who interests you--friend, parent, child, lover, or mate. The ensuing relationship dynamics are named colorfully and aptly: "Peas in a Pod," "Uncommon Intimacy," "Flexible Structures," "Few Dull Moments," and "Few Antipathies."

Describing 1,176 possibilities, The Secret Language of Relationships sheds light on the classic questions--the hows and whys of chemistry in relationships. Is there a prime ingredient for love at first sight, a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of it all? An entertaining exploration of the very thing we cannot do without--each other--this wonderful volume explains why we feel the way we do about the people in our lives, and how--if necessary--to make it better.

ONE of the many books you should get 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While the book is very overwhelming with information, it explains how to deal with the issues. There is ALOT of information in this book, therefore, it should be one of the first books you get. As another reviewer said, the medical problems described are scary - but that's part of down syndrome. Fortunately not all down syndrome children have all the medical problems.

The best part in the book is the developmental charts and growth charts that a lot of doctors, clinics, health units don't have!! It also explains what you need to know for your infant all the way through adulthood. Life insurance, inheritance, wills, family estate financial planning is discussed. Very important issues that will surprise you!

I find the book to be a constant resource. I refer to it constantly.

Editorial Review:

The book that thousands of new parents and professionals have turned to as their first source of information on Down syndrome. This classic guide provides new parents with straightforward and compassionate advice and insight. It helps families become more confident in their ability to cope, to learn about their child's development, to know where to seek help, and to advocate for their child. This second edition, written by the same knowledgeable parents and professionals who contributed to the first edition, covers these important areas: diagnosis; medical concerns & treatment; coping with your emotions; daily care; family life; early intervention; special education; and legal rights. The satisfying blend of practical information and emotional support make BABIES WITH DOWN SYNDROME the guide new families will want to refer to first.

Good guide without a lot of fuss. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Many pregnancy books I've read are just too much. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but sometimes you just want the straightforward info. Well, this book gives it to you without being dry. I really liked it and would recommend it. Also, I liked another book, which is a funnier look at pregnancy--You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine Months of My Life.

Editorial Review:

With over one million copies in print, this is one of the best-selling books about pregnancy on the market. More complete and up-to-date than any other pregnancy guide, this remarkable book is the "bible" for childbirth educators. Now revised with:

-a greatly expanded treatment of pregnancy tests, complications, and infections

-an expanded list of drugs and medications, plus advice for uses

-a brand-new chapter on creating a detailed birth plan

Called "excellent" by the American Journal of Nursing.

Birth as every woman would like it to be

• Recommended by Lamaze International as one of the top ten books for pregnant women and their families

• Includes a 45-minute DVD of six live gentle births

• More than 32,000 copies sold of the original edition

New parents are faced with a myriad of choices about pregnancy, labor, and birth. In Gentle Birth Choices Barbara Harper, renowned childbirth advocate, nurse, former midwife, and mother of three, helps to clarify these choices and shows how to plan a meaningful, family-centered birth experience. She dispels medical myths and reimagines birth without fear, pain, or violence. Harper explains the numerous gentle birth choices available, including giving birth in an independent birth center, at home, or in a hospital birthing room; finding a primary caregiver who shares your philosophy of birth; and deciding how to best use current technologies. She also provides practical advice for couples wishing to explore the option of using a doula or water during labor and birth to avoid the unwanted effects of drugs and epidurals.

The Gentle Birth Choices DVD blends interviews with midwives and physicians and six actual births that illustrate the options of water birth, home birth, and vaginal birth after a prior Cesarean section. The DVD clearly reveals the strength of women during childbirth and the healthy and happy outcome of women exercising gentle birth choices. It is a powerful instructional tool, not only for expectant parents, but also for midwives, hospitals, birth centers, and doctors.

Next steps. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After the stillbirth of our first child, we received or bought quite a few "Dead Baby Books" as we jokingly called them. Trying Again was the gift of a friend who knew that because we had lost our child to severe preeclampsia/HELLP, we would really struggle with whether we should try again in the future.

Trying Again is a reasonably good summary at the issues facing couples in a situation like ours, and special issues relevant going into a pregnancy that we know will be high risk. I have a minor frustration since all of these books about high risk family discuss the impact on the husband and the other children, and never seem to put any focus on the woman's career. It's often hard enough to be pregnant and work, let alone going into a pregnancy knowing that you may well have to stop working very early in order to go to term.

I would recommend the book for anyone who has lost a child. I think that many of the emotional issues are relevant whether you believe that your loss was a one-off event or whether you know already that you are high risk. However, I think women who have just learned the hard way that they are high risk will probably get the most out of the book.

Editorial Review:

Written especially for parents who have lost a child, Trying Again provides facts to help determine whether you, or your partner, are emotionally ready for another pregnancy.

Buyer Beware 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I gave this book 2 stars because it is NOT a new book - if you already own Dr. Sears' "The Family Nutrition Book" this book is nothing but a condensed version of that book - there is *nothing* new in here. They just took verbatim parts of that book and re-arranged them to put in this book.

If you already own their other book, this book is completely useless to you. I already have [and love] "The Family Nutrition Book" and I feel like I totally wasted my money on this book.

If you have no books on nutrition, this is a good one, but "The Family Nutrition book" is better because it is more complete and thorough.

I've been irritated for the last half decade at the Sears family just "re-organizing" material from their existing books and selling it to unwary customers as something "new" [a la "The Attachment Parenting Book"]. This book is exactly the same thing.

For those of us who are "die hard fans" and buy all their books, this starts to feel like being taken advantage of after a while.

So, if you want a good, basic nutrition book and don't already have one, this book will fit the bill just fine. If you already own the other book, you will feel cheated to spend your money on this "new" one.
