Philosophical Conundrum 3 out of 5 stars.
47 of 48 people found this review helpful.

I have followed the principles in this book as well as other NVC books and love the quality of connection I have with my kids (ages 5 and 2). However, now that my older son is in Kindergarten, we're dealing with a huge problem. The teacher has 24 kids in the class and does not have time to negotiate and find a win-win solution with each one. My son is getting in trouble almost every day for not following directions (i.e. clean up when everyone is cleaning up, not on his own schedule)and is starting to feel like a bad kid. Now I feel like we have to re-parent in some ways using a more 'love-and-logic' approach. I never wanted to be the kind of parent who says, "Do it because I said so." But I now realize that kids need to learn to follow the rules so that they themselves can be happier in society. We now do a lot of talking about what a 'team player' does. This is a great book but for me, it's missing the piece about teaching your kids to follow the rules, because that's how school, work and much of society work. It's wonderful for a parent and child to respect each other equally but this needs to be balanced with the idea that kid's individual needs (or anyone's for that matter) often cannot be accommodated. The philosophical conundrum for me is when to be the NVC parent and when to be the parent who says, "If you're a member of this family, this is what we do (i.e. sit down all together for dinner)." I guess the perfect parenting approach is eclectic; borrowing a little from each theory.

Editorial Review:

More than a tool to correct bad behavior, this handbook urges parents to move beyond typical discipline techniques by creating an environment based on mutual respect, emotional safety, and positive, open communication. The seven outlined principles redefine the parent-dominated family by teaching parents how to achieve mutual parent/child respect without being submissive, set firm limits without using demands or coercion, and empower children to open up, cooperate, and realize their own innate potential. Based on Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication process, the framework helps parents break down the barriers to outstanding relationships with their kids by avoiding destructive language and habits that keep parents and children from understanding one another. Activities, stories, and resources help parents immediately apply the seven keys to any parenting situation.

Practical and reassuring 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In searching for a good guide to natural childbirth, I read several titles from our library. The Bradley method felt a little too prescriptive (counting breaths, etc.), hypnobirthing a bit far-fetched. Henci Goer's important text is enough to scare anyone, but an essential read. Sheila Kitzinger's complete guide was very thorough and smart, but of everything, I chose to buy this instead. The yoga-based exercises are adaptable to multi-levels and presented in a great flow, and the birthing information emphasizes knowing and trusting your own body, with plenty of background on the natural processes of labor. For a woman who wants to be free to move around and labor comfortably, who believes in her own strength, flexibility, and resilience, I'd highly recommend Active Birth.

Very Informative and A Must Read For Pregnancy 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this when I was first expecting. This is an easy book to read and understand. It gave detailed information as to what to expect during labor and how to prepare myself emotionally and physically. Throughout my pregancy I constantly referred back to this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is expecting. This book helped to allievate my fears and was encouraging in the sense that my body was designed to give birth naturally without any interventions. Fantastic book!

Editorial Review:

"He says you'll never be hurt as much by being open as you have been by remaining closed."

The messenger is a school janitor with a master's in art history who claims to be channeling "from both sides of the veil." "He" is Adam, a three-year-old who has never spoken an intelligible word.  And the message is intended for Martha Beck, Adam's mother, who doesn't know whether to make a mad dash for the door to escape a raving lunatic (after all, how many conversations like this one can you have before you stop getting dinner party invitations and start pushing a mop yourself?) or accept another in a series of life lessons from an impeccable but mysterious source.

From the moment Martha and her husband, John, accidentally conceived their second child, all hell broke loose. They were a couple obsessed with success. After years of matching IQs and test scores with less driven peers, they had two Harvard degrees apiece and were gunning for more. They'd plotted out a future in the most vaunted ivory tower of academe. But the dream had begun to disintegrate. Then, when their unborn son, Adam, was diagnosed with Down syndrome, doctors, advisers, and friends in the Harvard community warned them that if they decided to keep the baby, they would lose all hope of achieving their carefully crafted goals. Fortunately, that's exactly what happened.

Expecting Adam is a poignant, challenging, and achingly funny chronicle of the extraordinary nine months of Martha's pregnancy. By the time Adam was born, Martha and John were propelled into a world in which they were forced to redefine everything of value to them, put all their faith in miracles, and trust that they could fly without a net. And it worked.

Martha's riveting, beautifully written memoir captures the abject terror and exhilarating freedom of facing impending parentdom, being forced to question one's deepest beliefs, and rewriting life's rules. It is an unforgettable celebration of the everyday magic that connects human souls to each other.

Editorial Review:

Mike Linderman is a teen therapist unlike any other. A real-life cowboy, he wakes up at the crack of dawn, works the cattle on his ranch, and then counsels some of the country's most troubled teens, approaching them with a unique blend of down-home honesty, straight-talk discipline, and pure intention that is rarely found in a therapist's office. Most of the teens Mike treats are angry, abused, violent, and dangerous, yet despite their difficult pasts, he has achieved extraordinary success with them, helping to turn their lives around and earning him the nickname the "Teen Whisperer."

In this book, he shares the secrets behind his success with parents everywhere, demonstrating how his regimen of hard work, integrity, and effective communication has turned seriously at-risk kids into loving, well-balanced, and productive teens. More than just a plan to rein in bad behavior, The Teen Whisperer deconstructs the emotional barriers that adolescence has placed between you and your child, helping you work with teens on their level—instead of simply treating them as subordinates. With this straightforward and open perspective, both you and your teen will learn to offer each other mutual respect and kindness, as you work together to heal the troubled hearts of your family.

Excellent resource for families and schools 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

There are many books on the topic of gifted and talented children as it relates to their education and needs. However, I found this book addressed the gifted child from many different aspects. It touched upon their academic and social-emotional needs. It provides parents with great insight into these children in terms of how they think, characteristics that are common and the dangers of mis-diagnosing gifted children with disorders such as ADHD. It is easy to read straight through but is also set up in such a way that a particular section of interest can stand alone. I had purchased this book for my own use and then purchased 7 more to present to our local Board of Education. Our district did not have a program for gifted and talented children on the elementary level. With this book in conjunction with other research a small group of parents and myself presented an entire packet to our Board of Ed. to make a case for this much needed program. We were successful. The program was added to our district's curriculum for next year. This book helped greatly to help us navigate and advocate for our children. Much recommended.

Editorial Review:

Parents learn what giftedness is (and isn't), how kids are identified as gifted, how to live with their gifted children, how to prevent perfectionism, when to get help, how to advocate for their children's education, and much more

BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, TIMELESS, MUST GET 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I LOVED this book and can't say enough good things about it. I loved filling it out and putting all my little keepsakes in it. Now that my baby is a year old I love looking back on it and remembering that special time that he was inside of me.
I've bought this book for all of my pregnant friends and they've all gotten as much joy out of it as I have.
The prompts are wonderful, the quotes are great.
My only complaint would be that there wasn't enough space for journaling!!!

Open-Ended Questions for Your Information. 5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked this book because it has a lot of open-ended questions in it so you can elaborate an idea, feeling, or emotion. This was exactly the book I was looking for.

Editorial Review:

Pregnancy is an exciting and magical time; this unique journal will help you record all the joys, fears, and memorable moments. Guided prompts throughout will let you write about your emotions and experiences, and there is space for photographs so you can document your changing body. An Amazing Resource! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I rated this book 4/5 stars because I find (although not often!!) that some of the information is outdated or incorrect. Overall though I absolutely love this book. I have turned to it multiple times throughout my current pregnancy, AND I have used it as a resource for many of my midwifery classes.
The language is simple and clear and there are also lots of pictures and illustrations throughout. I love the homebirth and waterbirth photos!

19 years and two healthy children later... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

hindsight being what it is I would have to say that Sheila's book gave me the courage of my convictions and the reassurance that we are born to do this baby rearing. I spend time on both continents and see very little problem with moms having a little wine or beer while pregnant or nursing~heck, some of the most incredible people I can think of that are between 40-60 had moms that held their cocktail glass in the same hand as their cigarette. NOT that I think either is really a great idea but really, we've gone overboard again in our reactions. Most moms don't have any interest in either alcohol or coffee for that matter when they are pregnant and given the confidence to trust and believe in that is really important. Many european women are brought a beer after childbirth to relax them and help their milk let down. For some it works for some it doesn't but the real issue in my mind is why young moms are being badgered into thinking that there are all of these taboos about something that is as old as we are~think about it! Short of dropping the little darlings on their heads and other really stupid things we do without thinking they really do turn out just fine, healthy and happy and well adjusted if we are. I believe that Sheila gives us a way to look at pregnancy and childbirth in a very wholesome practical manner and it remains my favorite book to give to young moms to be.
