Olds' lacking index 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While this text is a core for many parent-child health nursing courses and does have some great information, it's greatest drawback is the index. Yes, the index. The index is poorly designed such that students often cannot find the particular subject matter they are searching for. Although this appears to be a minor concern, after wasted hours at failed attempts to locate many different items, this issue is both frustrating and a drain on nursing students' precious resource - time.

Editorial Review:

An ideal companion resource to Olds' Maternal-Newborn Nursing & Women's Health Across the Lifespan, 8/e. Nurses working with childbearing families face a variety new challenges, including shortened lengths of hospital stay, the trend toward greater use of community-based and home care, and downsizing and mergers of health-care systems. This pocket guide is an ideal resource providing vital information to guide maternal-newborn nurses from pregnancy to the postpartum and newborn stages. It features drug guides, procedures, and common abbreviations for terminology. For student nurses gaining clinical experience.

Could having the occasional small bowl of ice cream lead to a midnight craving for pickles and ice cream?

It's common knowledge that diet and exercise have profound effects on your health. Can they affect your ability to get pregnant, too? Until now, the answer to that question was a qualified "Maybe." Today, it's "Yes!" thanks to exciting findings from a landmark long-term study of female nurses. As described in The Fertility Diet, ten simple changes in diet and activity can have profound effects on fertility. You can increase your chances of getting pregnant with such simple strategies as:

  • Avoiding trans fats
  • Eating more beans, nuts, and other fertility-boosting plant protein
  • Embracing whole grains such as oatmeal and barley
  • Having a glass of whole milk or other full-fat dairy product every day (a small bowl of ice cream every now and then counts, too!)
  • Staying away from sugared sodas

The Nurses' Health Study exhaustively examined the effects of diet and other lifestyle changes on fertility among nearly 20,000 female nurses. It scrutinized everything from alcohol to vitamins. In plain language, two of the study's lead researchers translate its groundbreaking findings into changes you can put into practice today, setting the stage for a healthy pregnancy and forming the foundation for an eating strategy that will serve you well for the rest of your life. The Fertility Diet also offers a week's worth of meal plans and fifteen delicious recipes.

Great gift! 5 out of 5 stars.

Gottman is a genius when it comes to male/female relationships. I purchased this books as a gift for my friend when she found out she was expecting. Unfortunately, we didn't learn of Gottman's writing until after our children were born and we were in marital counseling. I'm hoping this book will help her be better prepared for the permanent changes that happen when adding a baby into a marriage. Maybe they can save the money on counseling :-)

Editorial Review:

Congratulations! You have a new baby.

The ultimate guide to baby sign language, with color photos and 200 signs!

You can hear -- your baby can hear -- so whatÆs the deal? Every parent knows how frustrated -- how enraged -- babies become when they canÆt make themselves clear to their families. But now, before they can talk, they can tell you what they mean -- with signs!

Signing has taken the parenting world by storm. Why? Every parent is eager to give their baby the best possible upbringing, the least frustration, and the best head start for achieving in todayÆs driven, competitive society. Research (funded by the National Institutes of Health) has found that signing babies: talk sooner and have larger vocabularies; have stronger parent/child bonds; have less frustration, crying and tantrums; show more interest in books; engage in more sophisticated play; and have higher IQ scores. Now, what parent doesnÆt want that?

Baby signing has been featured on Dateline and Oprah. Teach Your Baby to Sign features photographs of babies signing, plus line illustrations of each sign. And it provides 200 useful signs -- more than any other book -- so parents can have a wide selection to choose from, along with stage-by-stage guidance so theyÆll know which signs to teach first and which to add as they and their baby become progressively more skilled and comfortable with signing.

The book I wish I had written 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I am a play therapist, author of "The Successful Divorce, In The Eyes of the Child" course and have taught parenting divorced for nine years. This is the book that says it all. The authors teach in clear logical manner how to co parent your children. They are sensitive to the pain both parents and children feel post divorce and teach how to proceed in parenting. I frequently use sections of their book in teaching to remind parents that they must still work together enough to meet children's needs. This is a concise book, no long drawn out narratives or tales of others pain... just the facts and how to avoid the pitfalls. I and the children of divorce, owe these authors a huge thank you. Their new book is also great,

Editorial Review:

This book helps parents in the aftermath of divorce learn to sustain a healthy co-parenting relationship. “Conflict and Parenting” explores parental conflict and its effects on children, conflict resolution, and the importance of forging a co-parenting relationship. “Co-Parenting Guidelines” offers specifics for solving day-to-day problems, disciplining, and handling conflict during transitional times and special events.

Some good information but very out of date 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book definitely needs updating. Though it has some good information, it's mostly intuitive and I found quite a bit of bad advice. The "Stories from Real Life" are clearly out of date as one references "sleeping medicine" for a baby prescribed from a doctor and many more reference spanking and slapping an 18 month old's hands. This book was not for me!

Should be updated 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Readable, mostly sensible, but with some attitudes that make me cringe.

A parent writes that she's afraid her son will become a homosexual because he seeks comfort from dad all the time. Does anybody really think that anymore? And the answer, which is that the son will "probably" turn out "normal" is both dated and biased. Then there's the cigarette thing. And a mother whose friends think a baby gate is horrid. Just old, old stuff.

But the four stars are for the sensible and compassionate approach to understanding that your baby is an individual, is experimenting with how to act, and needs your help and loving care. There's a lot of good material in here; be judicious and you'll find it's worth reading.
