Editorial Review:

Raising any child is a challenge, but what happens when they come as a pair? As any parent of multiples will tell you, sometimes only talking with another parent who's been there can get you through the difficult times and help you to cherish the moments that make twins truly "double the love." In this complete guide to raising multiples from infancy through the high-school years, Susan M. Heim, a mother of twins herself, offers the insight and advice that only a mother of multiples can give. It's Twins arms parents with the information they need, from decisions about breast-feeding versus formula and classroom placement, to dispelling myths about twins and ensuring equal treatment while fostering individuality and combating competitiveness. Best of all, It's Twins outdoes all those "dry" parenting manuals by offering chatty, bite-size bits of real-world wisdom and experiences from other moms and dads at various stages of twin-rearing, making this guide not just informative but entertaining as well. A former Senior Editor for HCI's bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series, Susan M. Heim is the author of Twice the Love: Stories of Inspiration for Families of Twins, Multiples and Singletons (TWINS magazine, 2006, ISBN 1-891846-31-0) and co-author of Oh, Baby! 7 Ways a Baby Will Change Your Life the First Year (Hampton Roads, 2006, ISBN 1-57174-503-3).

Horrid ! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book was recommended by a therapist while we were struggling with our soon to be 15 year old at the time. It was devasting. The concepts and suggestions are embarressing, insulting and degrading to teenagers and show no respect for their individualism, personal struggles or pain. Neither does it truly take into account how many of these teenagers have special needs that need to be considered with patience, humility and self restraint on the part of Authoritarian parents. It is rough having an out of control child. It hurts the entire family and many tears are shed but to further alienate these children is offensive. I know. I did it. I read the book and threw it out. After too much money spent on therapy and programs and taking advice from too many school counselors I found
"Positive Discipline For Teenagers" by Jane Nelson and Lynn Lott. What a concept! Respect these Teenagers! A year ago I was worried my son might end up in jail. Today I'm worried if he is getting enough protein! He is a conscientious cheerfull young man who respects life, is a Vegan and spends time on his own learning to control his anger and disabilities and discusses openly with his Father and I.Thanks to Jane and Lynn for their wonderful book.
Get "Positive Discipline for Teenagers" before your child hits puberty and stay clear of "Parenting Your Out of Control Teenager". Learn to respect and love each other now.

Editorial Review:

Every teenager rebels against authority at some point--talks back, breaks curfew, or disobeys. But literally millions of teens take their rebellion to a point where it disrupts their families and endangers their own futures or even their lives. If one of these teens is yours, you've probably lived through years of conflicting advice and pat solutions that don't last. Finally, this breakthrough guide from a master therapist will show you the seven steps to positive, permanent change for you and your teenager: 1. Learn the real reasons for teen misbehavior. 2. Make an ironclad contract to stop that behavior. 3. Troubleshoot future problems. 4. End button-pushing. 5. Stop the "seven aces" -- from disrespect to threats of violence. 6. Mobilize outside help. 7. Reclaim lost love within the family.Clear, compassionate, and packed with real-life solutions to real-life problems, this book gives parents the tools they need to turn their families' lives around for good.

Editorial Review:

LEARNING BEGINS AT BIRTH! Research on brain development has shown that any attempt to maximize intellectual growth must begin the first three years of life; the younger the child, the stronger the effect. Beginning education at age five is too late!

The new, large (8 ½ x 11 inch), 352-page 4th edition of SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY includes 260 weekly, age-appropriate developmental activities that are easy to understand and do. This unique book is your answer to early childhood education and now contains updated illustrations, Measurable Parameters To Profile Child Development, Tips For Solving Behavioral Dilemmas, The Early Brain and Important Points.

SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY is a highly recommended early childhood developmental parenting resource that tells you when, how and what skills to develop, provides an inexpensive phonetic approach for reading and spelling, contains a complete readiness curriculum full of ideas, enriches the parent child bond with close interaction and develops preschool skills, painlessly and in proper order. It only takes only about ten minutes for each activity.

This wonderful, helpful book now provides an easy, cost-saving method to measure the progress of a child to determine when the child should be ready for kindergarten. A simple checklist guide of developmental characteristics has proven to be a useful tool for parents and childcare providers to monitor progress by observation for children from birth to age five. This guide is useful for parents, teachers, Head Start, etc., because there is little paper work – just a checklist.

SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY was divinely inspired and is based upon Mark 9:36-37. Jesus taught his disciples to welcome children. This was a new approach in a society where children were usually treated as second-class citizens. Unfortunately, children are often still regarded as second-class citizens around the world. We hope that by interacting with them closely in an appropriate manner, as recommended in this book, parents will realize children are their most precious asset and will treat them accordingly.

This valuable, but inexpensive, resource has been found to be useful for children with special needs (e.g., autism, learning disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, etc.).

SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY is an inexpensive book that provides 5 years of activities at approximately a penny a day!

The best thing to spend on your child is your time!

This book has great recipes and pictures too. I don't mind having to read, but when I cook, I want to know what it's going to look like. This book has the best of both. I love how they categorize everything by months, so you know what's appropriate to feed your baby at each age group. Try it, you'll love it!

Not healthy 1 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

She never tired of the miracle. Each time she knelt to "catch" another baby, beloved California mid-wife Peggy Vincent paid homage to the moment when pain bows to joy, one person becomes two, woman turns to goddess, and the world moves aside to make room for one more soul.

Trained as a nurse at Duke University in the early 1960s, Vincent begins working in the delivery room of a local hospital in the San Francisco Bay area. Even after establishing an alternative birth center at the hospital, however, she is still frustrated with her lack of autonomy. Too often she witnesses births changing from normal to high risk because of routine obstetrical interventions.

Vincent then devotes herself to creating unique birth experiences for her clients and their families. She becomes a licensed midwife, opens her own practice, and delivers nearly three thousand babies during her remarkable career.

With every birth comes an unforgettable story. Each time Vincent "catches" a wet and wriggling baby, she encounters another memorable woman busy negotiating her unique path through the labyrinth of childbirth.

Meet Catherine as she rides out her labor in a car careening down a mountain road, her husband clueless at the wheel. Megan delivers on a leaky sailboat during the storm of the decade. Susannah gives birth so quietly and effortlessly, neither husband nor midwife notice much of anything until they see a baby lying on the bed, and Sofia spends her labor trying to keep her hyper doctor-father from burning down the house.

More than just a collection of birth stories, Baby Catcher is a provocative, moving, and highly personal account of the ongoing difficulties midwives face in the United States. With vivid portraits of courage, perseverance, and love, this is a passionate call to rethink today's technological hospital births in favor of a more individualized and profound experience in which mothers and fathers take the stage in the timeless drama of birth and renewal.

Try Sidney Ledson's Teach Your Child to Read instead 1 out of 5 stars.
18 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I have been a remedial reading tutor for 13 years and have seen the damage that sight word teaching such as this does--it produces poor spellers and readers who do not enjoy reading and who do not read as fluently as those taught with phonics.

Try instead Sidney Ledson's Teach Your Child to Read in Just Ten Minutes a Day Teach Your Child to Read in Just Ten Minutes a Day or any of Leapfrog's fridge phonics products--start with LeapFrog Fridge Phonics® Magnetic Set then LeapFrog Word Whammer Fridge Phonics® Set, also try Starfall for free.

You can read about how the brain learns, dyslexia, and why sight words are harmful at The Phonics Page, and more information about phonics and dyslexia at Don Potter's Education Page and some free phonetic programs such as Blend Phonics that produce lasting reading achievement.

Sounds Great 4 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Communicate with babies -- even before they can speak.

Before a baby can talk and before a toddler can say completely understandable words, they have important things to say. Babies and children are often more interested in connecting with parents or other caregivers than playing with their toys.

The Baby Signing Book uses American Sign Language, which is ideal for babies and toddlers because:

  • The ability of babies to understand what they see develops well before their ability to understand what they hear.
  • The ability of a baby to speak develops between the ages of 12 and 18 months, while the ability to use American Sign Language develops between 6 and 12 months.
  • Babies understand what they see much earlier than typically expected, and are able to sign well before they are able to talk.

The Baby Signing Book teaches parents 300 developmentally appropriate American Sign Language signs. With clear instructions for every sign, memory aid, song and game, the learning in this program is easy to follow and, most important, fun for all. Language milestones are charted throughout the book so progress can be charted. The book also features a variety of visual highlights that emphasize key concepts and interesting tips.

Adults can customize a program according to the family's needs and aspirations. With the dictionary of 300 symbols, this handbook is clearly the most user-friendly and comprehensive baby signing book available.

I had my first child in February and shortly after my Mom gave me her all of her Mommy secrets... It was this book. I grew up eating all this stuff and doing all of these things and I loved every bit of it. Now that I have my own Baby it has been so wonderful to revisit the wonderful recipes from my childhood. Whats even better she left me all of her little notes of leave this out and add this here and there. I'm looking forward to using it as much as she did.

Not what I was hoping for 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like a lot of people out there, I had heard the myths about working out when you're pregnant, and was hoping to read about *real* research about what's truly right for you and your baby.

This book accomplished that goal: it provides an evidence-based description of the benefits of exercise. I now understand that it's not only OK to keep working out -- it's actually advantageous on a lot of levels.

However, this book could be organized better (it seems to skip around too much) and didn't quite have the "exercise prescription" that I'm looking for (I'm actually searching now on Amazon to find some other books to buy).

Bottomline, this book is great for informing you about the benefits and safety of exercise during pregnancy (even though the writing is, at times, kind of long-winded), but when it comes down to what to actually *do*, this book falls short.

P.S. The pictures in this book are from, like, 1983 or something, which kind of makes you feel like it's really not all that up-to-date.

    Editorial Review:

Based on case studies of women who exercised regularly before, during, and after pregnancy, this resource examines the effects of exercise on women and their children. This broad and detailed resource lays to rest the controversies surrounding pregnancy and exercise, shedding new light on the positive interactions of exercise, health, fitness, and pregnancy. This guide enables both expecting mothers and health professionals to develop rational, objective, and individualized approaches to exercise and pregnancy care. Also discussed is the debate surrounding the prescription of strenuous exercise during the process of carrying, birthing, and nursing a baby.
