Reading with understanding... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have to say that my expereince with it as a Birth Doula has been nothing but wonderful. This books focuses on more intuitive ways of birthing. If you're looking for a "step by step, do this do that" guide...that is not what you will find here. If you are okay with learning to be your best advocate, with trusting your own innate intuition regarding birth, and with learning to experience freedom in birth (the true meaning behind the howling) this book can serve as a guide in that process.

I have given birth 4 times, everytime naturally. I have used Bradley as well as Lamaze, and if i had it to do over, I'd do birthing from within. In my doula practice I often find women who struggle with trusting thier bodies, who are attempting to maintain control over what thier body is doing...these women tend to have longer and more painful labors and deliveries. I often use the techniques and ideals from birthing from within and adapt them to each womans own experience.

I will say that it seems that one's perspective on this may be different if you actually have an opportunity to attend a class. I audited a class as a doula and it seemed every couple there was moved and helped by it.

I recognize that this means of birthing is not for everyone. Some women need more struture and there is nothing wrong with that. I still say this is a phenomenal resource if you want a more free flowing birth.

Editorial Review:

Here is a holistic approach to childbirth that examines this profound rite-of-passage, not as a medical event, but as an act of self-discovery. Exercises and activities such as journal writing, meditation, and painting will help mothers analyze their thoughts and face their fears during pregnancy. For use during birth, the book offers proven techniques for coping with labor pain without drugs, a discussion of the doctor or midwife’s role, and a look at the father’s responsibilities. Childbirth education should also include what do expect after the baby is born. Here are baby basics, such as how to bathe a newborn, how to get the little one to sleep, and tips for getting nursing off to a good start. Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a process of continuous learning and adjustment; Birthing From Within provides the necessary support and education to make each phase of birthing a rewarding experience.

Excellent Journal for IVF Pregnancies!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As an IVF mom who's never experienced periods, I especially appreciated the author's including the 38 week(266 day)Expected Delivery Date along with the LMP method to determine the expected date of delivery. This type of journal actually works great for me because my pregnancy began the day my physician transfered my 3 day embryos into my uterus and lasted 37 weeks and 1 day. Not having periods, I found myself making up a date for LMP because I got tired of being asked that question at appointments. The constant reminding that my pregnancy was IVF became tiresome. It really helped that Dr. Harris' journal includes both methods for pregnant moms like me. I'm now beginning my 2nd pregnancy and know that the day my embryos were transfered is day 4. It's great to know exactly where in the journal to began and contrary to the few that didn't like the daily aspect of this journal, As a person experiencing a miracle pregnancy I found it very comforting to know exactly what was going on and enjoyed the many diet and parenting tips. Highly recommended if your pregnancy is assisted through reproductive technology.

Editorial Review:

The first of its kind to combine practical information with beautiful design in a keepsake format, The Pregnancy Journal will reassure mothers-to-be about their babies' developmental stages and provide room for expectant parents to record the thoughts, experiences, and joys of pregnancy.

Why I am the Way I am... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I originally found this book while researching how two siblings could be so possibly different when coming from the same mother and father. That is my situation. My sister and I are like night and day. Well, this book broke down birth order in a very interesting, way. In fact, I believe in birth order theory more now than when I started. Being the first born, it is very characteristic of me (apparently) to be doing this research to find out more about me and my perfectionist self (which I found out that being a perfectionist isn't a good thing)...something of which I'm still fighting to believe. I revel in my obsessive detail orientation. Anyway, my sister being the middle child, always whined about how she had "Middle child syndrome" and how she's constantly ignored, not given enough attention..etc. So, I found it quite entertaining in the book that Leman doesn't even go into the Middle Child too much, therefore-catering (in a sense) to the Middle Child (at least my sister) feeling ignored and not as important. Leman says that the lack of information on the Middle Child is due the the fact that there just isn't enough known about the Middle Child and that that are deemed a "Mystery". Anyway, it's incredibly interesting, and I love how understandable it is. Dr. Leman makes is known early on in the book that he is Christian, but doesn't bring too much of his religious beliefs into the book. Although, I feel none of it needs to be there (as birth order and religion are two different topics), I suppose when relating to HIS life and his stories of being the youngest, it can't be avoided. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out why they are the way they are. It has helped me figure myself out more!

Editorial Review:

Dr. Leman's ever popular book on birth order is ready for a new generation of readers. With insight and wit, Dr. Leman offers readers a fascinating and often funny look at how birth order affects personality, marriage and relationships, parenting style, career, and children. Whether at home or on the job, birth order powerfully influences the way people interact with others. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about how they react to their world. Dr. Leman even shows readers how to overcome ingrained tendencies they never thought they'd be rid of, all by focusing on their birth order.

Best Baby Name Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My sister recommended this book and I love it. It is not like every other book and baby name website. If you are looking for a name dictionary with origin and meaning of every name, buy one of the other thousand baby name books out there. If you are looking for something different that groups names by category, helps to identify what people think of when they hear the name, and shows popularity over the last century of each name, then this is definitely the book for you. It has been a huge help so far in helping me identify the type of names that I like so I can narrow down the choices for our new baby boy arriving this fall.

Editorial Review:

Yes, your baby’s perfect name is out there.
The trick is finding it.

The perfect baby name will speak to your heart, give your child a great start in life—and maybe even satisfy your relatives.  But you can't expect to just stumble on a name like that in an A to Z dictionary or on a trendy list.

That’s why you need The Baby Name Wizard. Created by a name-searching mom, it uses groundbreaking research and computer generated models to pinpoint each name’s image, examine its usage and popularity over the last 100 years, and suggest other promising ideas. A perfect guide to the modern world of names, The Baby Name Wizard will engage you from the first name you look up and keep you enchanted through your journey to the just-right name for your baby.

If you only buy one book to prepare your partner... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

...this is the one to get. We were preparing for the drug & intervention free birth of our first child when our doula recommended this book for my husband. Our goal was to labor at home for as long as possible and Penny Simkin's clear, detailed information gave him the confidence to support me both alone (to 6+cm!) at home & alongside our 'team' at the hospital.

Editorial Review:

If you want to learn how best to help an expectant mother have a happy and healthy childbirth, The Birth Partner, Third Edition is the only book you'll need. Introduction to Bradley Method of childbirth 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was part of the Bradley Method class I took in preparation for having my first child. It is a good overview of that method of childbirth, giving thorough explanations of the theories behind the Bradley Method.

The way to go! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am not a big reader, but this book was easy to read. It kept things really simple. I also liked that it separated my job versus my husband's job. I ended up having a c-section so we were unable to put all the knowledge that this book provided to use. As they say, "knowledge is power," and this book provided the peace of mind i needed during my pregnancy.

Editorial Review:

Since the Bradley method was first introduced in 1970, a growing number of expectant parents have opted for natural childbirth, knowing that it's safer than medicated or surgical delivery. But where can parents-to-be go for information on how to have a successful Bradley birth? This book provides all the answers, offering sound advice on how to prepare physically for labor and what to expect during each of its stages. Photos & line drawings.

Editorial Review:

For thousands of years, Chinese women have trusted traditional Chinese medicine to help them conceive. A recent medical study found that women who augmented Western fertility treatments with TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, doubled their chances of a succesful pregnancy. THE INFERTILITY CURE gives women an effective, natural means of supporting their efforts to get pregnant. Based on techniques and remedies drawn from traditional Chinese medicine, this program shows readers how to increase their overall health and well-being, strengthen the organs and systems vital to reproduction, heal specific conditions that may affect fertility, and even support Western-based reproductive technology such as IVF and hormone therapy. Dr. Lewis' easy-to-follow program begins with diagnosis, using an extensive questionnaire to determine each reader's unique diagnostic category. The next three steps involve bringing a woman's body back into balance through diet, acupressure, and Chinese herbs. By following this program, women will be able to create a welcoming physical and emotional environment for what they desire most: a child.
