Editorial Review:

Every pregnant woman recognizes that what she eats, drinks, and does with her body directly affects the developing baby within her. Yet mothers-to-be—between juggling work, other children, and their many other responsibilities—often don't have the time that they'd like to devote to their nutrition. Now, Eating for Pregnancy addresses the nutritional needs of pregnant women today, helping them navigate through frozen food aisles and prepared food sections and prepare homemade meals as healthy and easy as possible. Authors Jones and Hudson provide reassuring, up-to-date nutritional information; shopping and eating tips to keep nutrient-intake high and unnecessary weight-gain to a minimum; and guilt-free, smart-choice convenience and semi-prepared food options. Their more than 120 recipes, organized into six main sections, are high in vitamins, iron, calcium, protein, and fiber and moderate in amounts of fat, sodium, and sugar. Each recipe highlights "What's in this for baby and me?" and includes complete nutritional breakdowns and meal planning advice; many offer suggestions for substitutions and other timesaving shortcuts. Eating for Pregnancy also caters to women with gestational diabetes with diabetic tips and ADA exchange values. A vegetarian chapter offers essential advice to pregnant vegetarians along with inspiring recipes. Eating for Pregnancy is the only book that combines the experience of a professionally trained cook and writer turned home cook and mother with the expertise and experience of a perinatal nutritionist who sees hundreds of clients a year.

Great Book 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I originally purchased this book for one of my college courses. As I read it, I learned many new ways to handle discipline problems as well as dealing with my own anger and frustration that often arises from disciplinary situations. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who may be having these type of issues.

Editorial Review:

The 7 Basic Skills for Turning Conflict into Cooperation.

Have you ever opened your mouth to discipline your child, and your parents' nastiest words tumble out? In an era when most parenting books focus on the child, this book supports parents in dealing more positively with themselves as well as their toddler–to–school–age children, offering specific tools to stop policing and pleading with kids and start being the parents we want to be.

Based on Dr. Bailey's more than 25 years of work with children, this book explains that how we discipline ourselves is ultimately how we discipline our children. Her "Seven Powers for Self–Control" dramatically increase our ability to keep our cool with our children. These correspond to "Seven Basic Discipline Skills" we can use with our children in conflict situations. As children internalise these skills, they naturally learn "Seven Values for Living," which include integrity, respect, compassion, and responsibility.

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

After reading the other reviews of this book, and another by the same authors (The Pregnancy Book), I purchased both, and am dissatisfied with both. Both books are written at about the 8th grade level, and The Birth Book is definitely written with a solid bias towards one school of birthing techniques.

There's an entire section on "interviewing OBs and deciding which hospital to have your child." For those of us with insurance plans, and a hospital five minutes away, the browbeating about how you're irresponsible and don't care enough if you don't give your OB the fifth degree before allowing him or her to do his or her job, this can be a bit off-putting.

Additionally, the focus on having a "birth plan" and "envisoning your perfect day" comes off sounding a good deal more like planning a wedding than having a baby.

While the book does a good job of presenting a variety of different options that first-time mothers (like myself) might not have considered, I found that talking with my husband's aunt, an OB nurse of 30 years' experience, to be much more calming, simply because the tone of the aunt was one of common sense, while the tone of this book is, well. . . it's hard to characterize without being disparaging, but it's a little flower-power for my tastes.

Editorial Review:

Gives expectant parents an overview of the options available, offering up-to-the-minute advice on such matters as physical and emotional preparation, the father's role, avoiding a cesarean birth, and other information. 35,000 first printing. Tour.

What a great tool this book has been. It helped us make a break through with our second daughter who we had been struggling with for over a year. We had been working hard with all of her indivual issues in isolation. We worked with her language delays, her behavorial problems, her sleep issues, sibling struggles and more. This his book helped with the big picture and helped make all that all that other work come together in a way that really helped our whole family.

Editorial Review:

Your ex-spouse is bad-mouthing you to your children, perhaps even trying to turn them against you. If you handle the situation ineffectively, you could lose your children's respect, their affections - even in extreme case, lose contact with them. The conventional advice is to do nothing, that fighting fire with fire will only result in greater injury to the children. But Dr Richard Warshak is convinced that this approach does nothing but leave parents feeling helpless. And the damage to children is considerable, particularly when warring parents enlist children as allies in the battle. The problems range from tainted parent-child relationships to a disturbance known as parental alienation syndrome, in which children virtually disown one of their parents. DIVORCE POISON is the first book that offers specific advice to protect children from the results of their parents' animosity. It details how to distinguish different types of criticism, how and why parents manipulate their children, how to detect these manoeuvres, and how these practices damage children. Most importantly, it offers parents powerful strategies to preserve and rebuild loving relationships with their children.

Pediatrician: I recommend it to all 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book to all my parents starting at 1mo. Since doing this routinely I have noticed many more sleeping babies and parents with much less intervention from me. I talk about sleep a lot, but now I dont have to as much! Teaching a baby sleep independence is a vital developmental task (most parents dont realize this), most new parents wait WAY too long, and somehow expect the baby to "do it when they are ready." Waiting until 12mo old is a guarantee of having to "cry it out", and that is OK if necessary, but starting younger will avoid this. I have scores and scores of happy parents from all walks of life who are thrilled with their 6mo old, and the baby is MUCH happier too. You are doing this for your baby, not so much for yourself, children need to sleep longer to function during the day. A 10 mo old who is getting up every 2-3 hours is barely able to function during the day (let alone the mom, especially behind the wheel). Get this book early and think about it and discuss with your partner, you wont be disappointed. BTW, it is much easier to read than the popular "Healthy Sleep Habits" book, which could use a good editor.

Editorial Review:

Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting.

Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems.

Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep.

This book is incredible! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Thank goodness for this book...I have read it since the day I got it and it keeps me on track for rethinking my ideas of the birthing process....I want a calm and natural birth and for the hundreds of women who shared their stories of childbirth, this gives me hope that you can indeed survive childbirth with your attitude intact. It also gave me even more belief that my midwife is a better option for me and that I can count on her for the support I will need to deliver my baby without medical intervention unless it is necessary.

Editorial Review:

Here is the 4th edition of the classic book on home birth that introduced a whole generation of women to the concept of natural childbirth. Back again are even more amazing birthing tales, including those from women who were babies in earlier editions and stories about Old Order Amish women attended by the Farm midwives.

Also new is information about the safety of techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, information on postpartum depression and maternal death, and recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives.

From the amazing birthing tales to care of the newborn, Spiritual Midwifery is still one of the best books an expectant mother could own. Includes resources for doulas, childbirth educators, birth centers, and other organizations and alliances dedicated to improving maternity care at home and in hospitals.
