Editorial Review:

The authors of Beyond Jennifer & Jason, the bestseller that revolutionized baby naming, offer the last word on the perfect first name.

Hope is hot, Hortense is not-- at last, here's what parents really need to know before naming a baby.

For years you knew what to expect from a baby-name book: a long, dull list of names with their dictionary definitions. All that changed with Beyond Jennifer & Jason-- the groundbreaking book on styles and trends in baby names that has been called "the best baby-naming book ever written" (The News Journal).

Now Rosenkrantz and Satran return with an all-new baby-name guide that is destined to become a classic. Like other books, it's packed with entries on girls' and boys' names from A to Z, but no one else gives you the inside story on names: why the world has all the Ashleys it needs, why everyone loves Emily, and why you should or should not call your son Ishmael. Drawing on sources as diverse as ancient myths, current TV series, the Bible, and world literature, The Last Word on First Names is a readable, witty, and illuminating guide to the real-world meaning of Miranda, Max, and thousands of other names from Abigail to Zelig. No one should name a baby without this book.

Bible Names Was A Blessing 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Bible Names for your Baby was quite a blessing. It helped my husband and I pick out the perfect biblical name for our beautiful new son. The book was very nicely organized, and it was extremely easy to understand. We really liked the book because instead of just listing column after column of names and meanings; the book gave you detailed information on the name and the person that possessed it. This book truly was a blessing and made at least one part of my pregnancy easy.

Very disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I could not believe after reading the wonderful reviews on this book, how incredibly bad it was. It had only a very few of the over 3000 Bible baby names. If you are trying to find a "new" name from the Bible for your child, look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

Bible Names for Your Baby takes a lighthearted yet accurate look at names from the Old and New Testaments. From classical Mark and Sarah, to the unusual Felix and Faith, the Bible terms for flowers, herbs, people, places, stones, and virtues all reflect a unique style and add a special dimension to name selection that any parent can appreciate.

Inaccurate and poorly researched book! 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I just borrowed this book from the library today. I was completely insulted by the author because she mangled the majority of the Vietnamese baby names. What makes the Vietnamese language unique compared to other Asian languages is that it uses the Roman alphabet. Moreoever, the words carry a completely different meaning when one changes from one diacritical mark to another. Ellefson not only mispelled the names, mistook certain Chinese baby names for Vietnamese name, but also misinterpreted a significant number of names in just the Vietnamese section. Like French language, certain words signify either masculine or feminine, for example 'ca'i' means female, it is not a name. She incorrectly misinterpreted 12 out of 46 female names, a 26% error rate. Worse yet, she misinterpreted 15 out of 51 of the male names, a huge 29% error rate. Just to name a few regarding the girl names, 'choy' and 'Ping' are not Vietnamese names; 'huynh' was mispelled as 'hyunh', 'Thi' as 'Ti'; 'Viet' doesn't mean 'destroy'. As for the boy names, she mispelled 'Vang' as 'Dan'. Nghia doesn't mean forever, it depends on whatever the next word is.

Ellefson seriously lacks genuine authorship in introducing another culture, especially Vietnamese. She is plainly inaccurate and culturally illiterate. She is very bold for charging buyer for this junk. If she is wrong when it comes to Vietnamese names, I have questions about her knowledge of other cultures' names. I would give her "0" stars if I had the choice. Don't waste your money buying this shoddily written book!!!

Editorial Review:

Whether you're simply interested in cognomens (names), or expecting a birth, Connie Lockhart Ellefson's compendium of more than 10,000 names and meanings from 50 countries ought to do the trick. There's Greek Adara meaning beauty, Bon-Hwa in Korean is utmost glory, and Myung-Suck means long-lasting rock in Korean. It's a fascinating collection, and so easy to lose yourself you might forget to find a name for Junior.

Editorial Review:

From decade to decade, significant changes occur in the choice of first names for children. One-time favorites are perceived as old fashioned and replaced by new choices. In The Name Game, Jurgen Gerhards shows that shifts in the choice of names are based on more than arbitrary trends of fashion. Instead, he demonstrates, they are determined by larger currents in cultural modernization. Using classic tools of sociology, Gerhards focuses on changing patterns of first names in Germany from the end of the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth, using these as an indicator of cultural change. Among the influences he considers are religion, and he notes a trend toward greater secularization in first names. He considers the extent to which Christian names have been displaced, and whether the process is similar for Catholics and Protestants. He traces the impact of different political regimes (Second Empire, Weimar Republic, Third Reich, West Germany, East Germany) and the accompanying rise and fall of German nationalist sentiment. He also investigates the dissolution of the family as a unit of production, and its impact on the naming of children. He shows that the weakening of traditional ties of religion, nation, and family has led to greater individuation and greater receptivity toward foreign first names. Gerhards concludes with a discussion of whether the blurring of gender and sex roles is reflected in the decrease of gender-specific names. Written in a lucid, approachable style, The Name Game will be of interest not only to sociologists and cultural studies specialists, but also non-professionals, especially parents who are interested in reflecting on the process of name giving.

Superb book: well researched and brilliantly set out. 5 out of 5 stars.

The best baby name book I have read. The author is a professor at UCLA and has done an ingenious job in writing this book.

interesting, but poorly edited 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

we were looking for a baby name book that was a little deeper than what a name meant in French, Irish or whatever. this book is interesting in that it gives you some background as to how various names are perceived -- i.e., a woman named Katherine is likely to be perceived as being more successful than a person named Lois. It is an interesting book and the author has impressive credentials. The book is, however, also full of typographical errors -- enough that it makes me wonder how quickly the whole thing was thrown together & whether the research is really solid. Seems like a very minor thing, but I think it draws questions to the validity of the entire publication. Definitely worth a couple of bucks, though.

As there are so many baby names books I found it hard to narrow the choices.I read other reviews of this book and finally purchased it.It was a good choice.I enjoyed this book. Not your average-boring book but a very well researched book. The book has character. One of the most comprehensive listing of names and variations I have ever seen and that makes this book better than most.Interesting trivia throughout too.Plenty of advice on what to consider when naming a baby.

Its a good size book, printed on good quality paper with a unique cover, etc make this book a worthwhile addition.
I also recommend these:

"The very best baby name book in the whole wide world".By Bruce Lansky.

Baby Name Countdown 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book definitely has a lot of names, but it is overwhelming and hard to use. There is a decent listing of popular names and their meanings (although the details provided regarding origin, alternate spellings, etc. are very sparse), but the section on unusual names is nearly useless. There are thousands of names, printed in very small print, with no information about any of them (origin, meaning, etc.). I regret buying this book because there are much more reasonably priced books that do a much better job of guiding your decision.

Editorial Review:

From traditional to trendy, popular to unusual, this best-selling reference lists more names than any other baby name book. Based on nearly two million birth records from every region of the U.S. and Canada, The Baby Name Countdown includes meanings and origins of the 3,000 most popular names, the rankings of the 100 most popular boys and girls names, plus thousands of unusual names to inspire the imagination of those searching for the rare and exotic, or alternative spellings. Expanded to include the most popular baby namesfrom each decade of the twentieth century, this very reader-friendly guide is divided into sections that list the top 100 names, girls and boys names, unusual names, and provides popularity ratings throughout.
