You Can Call Me Hoppa---wonderful book, great gift. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I got this book to give to my folks as a way to tell them they were "expectant grandparents"---their first grandchild. The surprise went over wonderfully. It's a great book and a superb way to "break-the-news".

Editorial Review:

You Can Call Me Hoppa! The Grandparents' Guide to Choosing a Name that Fits is a collection of grandparent names and stories designed to assist modern grandparents in finding the answer to the 'what to be called?' question. Think baby name book for Boomers! We hope that you enjoy perusing the pages of possibilities, whether you are a first-time grandparent, one who is relatively established or a step-grandparent. Most of us are given a name at birth and don't again get the opportunity to choose a name that truly represents who we are until we reach grandparenthood. The names and stories in this book include traditional titles, cultural appellations and names that are perfectly personal. But the most captivating collection of monikers is found in the Out of the Mouths of Babes section. The name that is right for you may not be contained within the pages of this book, but we hope that we can provide you with the inspiration you need to choose a name that fits!

Severely mis-lead 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I first read Divine Secrets... and then read this book, and very much felt lied to by the author. In the second book the mother is basically lovable, well almost, but flawed. Then I went and read the first book Little Altars Everywhere and read that the mother is sexually abusing her children. This did not come up in Divine Secrets at all and to me seems like a bunch of bull crap. I know that Divine Secrets is mostly from the daughters point of view and that the mother was sexually abusing her sons, but evenstill. On its own it would be a much better book.

The last chapter is worth the entire book 3 out of 5 stars.

This was the hardest read in the Ya-Ya series. I didn't always like it. It felt disjointed and uneven and some chapters (they were like vignettes, strung together) I started and then just skimmed or left unread.

The final chapter, however - was worth the entire experience. I wish we could have heard from this voice, the adult voice of Siddalee, through the entire thing. Baylor, yeah - he was good, too. There were no other Ya-Ya's (except in passing, where were "the gang" we love so much in Divine Secrets and Ya-Ya's in Bloom?). This book, the prequel to the rest was mostly Vivi's family.

I was reading someplace, maybe it was here, readers were upset about a revelation that takes place in this book. I guess I am weird in that I would rather have the characters in the books I read be flawed, be human.

Vivi is messed up. Ya-Ya readers know that. Her parents were messed up, her children are messed up albeit differently. "Little Altars" begins with Sidda as a pissed-off-on-the-edge-of-puberty girl scout and ends with Sidda as a late 30's woman, the woman who we see several years later narrating half of Divine Secrets.

I don't expect my "heroines" to be wind up toys or robots or flawless automatons. I would rather they be real.

And this volume, in my estimation, doesn't do it.

I think it was written first. But that last chapter. Oh my, that last chapter. I sat at my kitchen table sobbing and my daughter Katherine, from the living room said, "Mommy? Are you ok?" I hadn't realized I was so loud!

Read the last chapter. Pick it up at the bookstore and read it.
Here is one group of sentences as a preview for you:

"As far as I'm concerned, if you could bottle that smell, all the companies that make Xanax, Prozac and Valium would be out of business. You could just open the bottle and smell Willetta and never feel panicked or depressed again."

Love it.

Editorial Review:

Don't miss Little Altars Everywhere, the New York Times bestselling companion novel that introduces the Ya–Yas and is also a basis for the film.

One of my faves. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As a self-proclaimed "name geek" and collector of baby name books, I list this among my top 5 favorite baby name books. No, it does not include definitions and origins for every name, but that is what the majority of other books do. This book however, provides expert opinions. Really, knowing that a name means "noble worlf" is not near as important as knowing that it will always be associated with a horrific ruler (or perhaps a not-so-pleasant word...or whatever else you can think of). It also helps some to know where the world is in their naming style. Is the world ready for Lois to come back...probably not. But, they seem to be ready for other old-fashioned favorites.

A Fun Name Book - Where We Found OUR Sons Name! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was a lot more fun and complete than other baby name books. This is where we picked our new 3 week old son's name (Colton). The definitions and descriptions for names in this book are humorous and accurate, and the book has a "key" for names on the rise, decline, or are unisex. A great resource. If you're going to get only one baby name book, this is the one!

Entertaining, but poorly researched. 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have a huge collection of baby name books, and consider this one to be one of the most poorly researched. It contains a few articles at the beginning which are entertaining (but fairly standard, as baby name books go), but the meat-and-bones of this book is the list of names themselves. The origins and meanings of names in here are inaccurate more often than not. For example, it lists the name "Gladys" as being Celtic for "princess." In all my 20+ years of researching names, I can't even begin to fathom where that origin came from.

In order to make the claim of being the "very best" - it relies upon the number of names it has. However, that number is largely made up of coming up with bizarre spellings and strange nicknames for already existing names (like Kore for Kora, Imojean for Imogen...).

So, if you're simply looking for a list of names to choose from, this book is OK. If you're looking for actual factual information about name origins and meaning, stay far, far away from this one!

Editorial Review:

Larry McMurtry's "funny and brutal" (New York Times) landmark novel The Last Picture Show introduced the shrinking oil-patch town of Thalia, Texas, and its teenaged residents Duane, Sonny, and Jacy. In Texasville, the trio grew up to "adultery and madness, bankruptcy and boom times," (New York Daily News). Now McMurtry takes his most colorful characters into their twilight years -- in an unforgettable end to the Thalia saga.

Surrounded by his children, all of whom are going through tumultuous transitional times; his promiscuous wife, Karla, who is with her own demons; and his friend Sonny, who seems to be dying, Duane can't make sense of his life anymore. The stark realization that he has spent his whole life in a miserable dust-bowl town throws him into a protracted end-of-life crisis -- one that will hurtle him toward unexpected love, profoundly affect old friends, and cause him to embark on outlandish new beginning.

McMurtry's strongest and most appealing contemporary novel since Terms of Endearment, Duane's Depressed is utterly unsentimental, often hilarious, sometimes tragic and shocking, and in the end full of hope.

Great resource! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book. I like the fact that it doesn't just give you a flat historical meaning, but bases the meaning on the sounds that the letters in your name make and words that have similar patterns or sounds. We all make associations with words, so it's worth it to consider this idea. I really enjoyed reading about the history of each letter and how the sounds of letters and combinations can have different effects. I haven't seen a name book like this before. Highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

The Secret Universe of Names explains, in fascinating detail and name-by-name example, how the sounds of a specific name evoke basic, gut reactions and what this means for you and yours. Accompanying each entry is a short biography, with a photo of a well-known personality who exemplifies the name attributes, and a rating of their charisma, power and leadership skills, sex appeal, and career strengths. The Secret Universe of names is a book to give, to amuse and educate, to speculate about, and to keep forever.

Great for reading and reference 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This charming name book will assist parents in choosing the appropriate Celtic name for their baby as it provides an extensive list of evocative Irish names. But why an Irish name? For some reason, this musical language and the magical legends of Ireland have become very popular in the Anglo-Saxon world and further afield. The introduction discusses trends in the giving of names and mentions the most popular current Irish names. The chapter Little Dark One provides a cursory history of the settling of Ireland by the Celts and then lists and explains suitable names for dark haired people, such as Darcy, Douglas and Duane. In the chapter The Fairest Of Them All there's mention of the Tuatha De Danaan and a discussion of names like Barry, Finbar, Kelly, etc. Red haired people are treated in the next chapters, where some of the more common names are Rory and Rowan, whilst the next chapter deals with names deriving from the root words for light or brightness; these include Aidan and Keegan. A Celtic Menagerie provides names that are connected with animal names or qualities: here you will find Colm, Conan, Conor, Oscar and Ronan. In the chapter titled The Green Isle, names derived from plants are given, including Darren and Tyrone. Warrior names in the next chapter include Casey, Fergal and Kane. Wednesday's Child provides names for less worthy traits, like Doran, Etain and Kennedy. Banshee names include Bevin, Cliona and Una, while names invented by authors include Fiona, Gulliver, Imogen and Vanessa. The next chapter discusses and lists the retranslation back into Irish, of popular Anglophonic names and also provides a list of Irish names with their English translations. The A - Z index lists all the names and their meanings/histories alphabetically and is followed by a calendar of saints' feast days. This interesting read and valuable reference work concludes with a thorough index.

Editorial Review:

Ireland is famous for its beauty, its magic--and its lyrical names. This one-of-a-kind baby name book offers hundreds of choices for parents-to-be. From ancient to modern names and from popular to rare, this handy resource includes A-to-Z listings on a variety of themes, such as names for redheads, brunettes and blondes; famous Irish personages; Irish saints; magic, myth and legend; Celtic animals and plants; historical events and literature; and alternate spellings.

A Great Resource -- Goes Way Beyond Avraham & Sara 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book to find a name for my second child. I love it. My baby is not even born yet, but it has helped me and my husband a great deal.I have already lent it to my sister and a close friend who have had babies recently. They loved it too. I especially liked the additional resources in back. There are lists of names for twins (boys, girls, and both), babies born in a certain Jewish month, and around various Jewish holidays.

It seems to be quite a comprehensive list. Smadar includes notes on popularity in Israel, as well as origin, meaning, and commonality in general. Also included is a note if the name can be used by either gender. If this is the case, Smadar will tell you if it is more comon for boys or for girls. This is very useful if you dislike names that aren't clearly one or the other. There are some names that I did not realize could be used by both females and males.

In addition to the "traditional" or Biblical names the author includes many newer names and names with beautiful meanings. Smadar did a great job. I highly reccomend it.
