Highly recommended for expecting Christian parents. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The Best-Ever Christian Baby Name Book: Thousand of Names and Their Meanings is a guide especially for Christian parents, offering thousands of names to choose from, their alternate spellings, and innate meaning. The Best-Ever Christian Baby Name Book deliberately avoids names with a non-Christian connotation (such as names connected to other pantheons or faith traditions) except in those cases when such names are also Biblical names. Thumbnail biographies of famous Christians or humanitarians for whom children can be named dot the entries, and an introductory section guides Christian parents in how to choose a child's name. "Several years ago a friend of mine mentioned that she had always dreamed of having a son named Nick... but when she married a man with the last name of Knack, she knew she had to forever abandon that dream." Highly recommended for expecting Christian parents.

Editorial Review:

A name is usually the first important decision when a new baby arrives. In this helpful and fun book, authors Nick Harrison and Steve Miller offer Christian parents more than 5000 names and their meanings, along with interesting sidebars filled with facts and trivia relating to name selection. Included is a useful guide to hundreds of biblical names and their meanings.

Parents will learn

  • the current most popular names given to newborns
  • what not to do when choosing a baby name
  • ideas for creating a name that ties into family history
  • alternate spellings for their favorite names

plus more unusual insight into names and their significance.

Nope, it's the original 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have to admit to being upset by the claim that this book is a knockoff of 50,001 Best Baby Names (and the piddly single star rating as a result), given that the first edition of Lansky's book was published in 1979, and the first edition of 50,001 in 2005. My 1984 edition does include multiple lists of the type to which MOM is referring.

I was astonished when I saw the updated copy of this book -- my skinny 1984 ed. has only 13,001 names! When I flipped through the newest edition in search of the obscure names I tend to like (like another reviewer's husband, I am a writer), I was thrilled to find most of them, in addition to more common names.

I also own Sherrilyn Kenyon's Character Naming book, and I have to say that the new version of The Very Best Baby Name Book may have it beat. My biggest complaint about Kenyon's book is that while it includes Hebrew and even a (very) few Sanskrit names, it is almost completely devoid of any Asian-based names (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, among others). Lansky includes lists of popular names from around the world -- from Canada to Russia to China to Kenya. Though Kenyon's book does categorize names based on nationality, it can be a little mind-numbing to page through the same names in nationality after nationality, so it's nice to have another reference with the more traditional alphabetical approach (and nationality of origin is included for each name).

I have also used websites that contain databases of thousands of names, and I adamantly believe that buying a book like Lansky's is *well* worth the money. Online databases, while useful, are riddled with advertisements and popups; typically the list of names fills only a tenth of the page, leaving you paging through short list after short list and spending as much time clicking and scrolling as you do reading names. Lansky's book is a compilation of lots of sites of this sort, and a must-have for any writer's (or future parent's!) shelf.

Editorial Review:

The Very Best Baby Name Book is now bigger and better. It includes 60,000+ names and 300+ helpful lists of names to consider. It also includes new features such as: name games (that can be played at home or at parties), how to throw a baby-name- themed shower, the latest outrageous names selected by celebrities for their babies, new fascinating facts about names, and answers to frequently asked baby naming questions from Bruce Lansky.

Editorial Review:

Baby-naming has become an art form with parents today, but where do parents go to find names and their meanings? The Name Book offers particular inspiration to those who want more than just a list of popular names. From Aaron to Zoe, this useful book includes the cultural origin, the literal meaning, and the spiritual significance of more than 10,000 names. An appropriate verse of Scripture accompanies each name, offering parents a special way to bless their children.

too many off the wall names 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 8 people found this review helpful.

if you are looking for an irish name spelled in gaelic, this is your book. if you are hard-up for a romanian name for your little one, this is your book. if you are looking for a "normal," pronouceable name, you'd do better looking elsewhere.

yes, this book has a billion names in it, but well over half are utterly unusable--seriously. either you cannot pronounce them (see above referenced gaelic names) or they are just plain off the charts weird.

we have this book and while i flipped through it a few times, mostly we made fun of the names in it.

a good baby name book, but not the best 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I like this book.It is a good collection of names(although not the 30,000 promised)from various areas of the world, from South East Asia to Wales, and from Ireland to the Usa.It certinly will be useful in naming your child if youre after a multi cultural name.
However there are downsides to this book-some of the names are in the wrong section or in 2 or 3 different sections of the book(probably to make up the 30,000 names promised)and with alot of entries(especially those mentioned above)a proper name description and meaning are not given. An example of this is in the American section the name Madeline is described as "French cognate of Magdalene".If it is French, what is it doing in the American Section?Yes it may be popular in America but its still French,so whats it doing in the American section?and also, the exact translation is not given. It is actually Greek and means "tower of Strength"(i learnt this from another book)
Also, depending on where you live in the world some names may not be appropriate for your child(due to cultures, lifestyles etc)
for example a boy or girl from California may not appreciate being called the Hawaiian names of Kapalekanaka or Leolakupaianaha.Just the same as an Irish boy or girl may not like being called the vietnamese names Dieu Hien or Ngocmykhanh.
It doent mean that these are "bad names"(many of them do indeed have beautiful meanings)they certinly are not bad names. Its just that they do not fit in with our cultures and lifestyles etc.
However the book certinly does deliver what is promises-to deliver lots of names from around the world, even if its not the 30,000 that is promised.

not a book for French beginners 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I don't like this book, actually i am taking French in college now, this is the textbook for my elementary course. but i don't think it is a book for beginners, there are too much infor in one chapter. and it never makes it clear the grammar points/pronunciation, the CDs read very fast to catch up with.

Great book for learning beginning French 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book for a college introductory course and it was much better than any that I had ever used in high school. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn french. The cd was also very helpful in helping me to learn how to pronounce.

expensive and disorgaznied 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have absolutely no idea why the french department at my university selected "Invitation au monde francophone" as the textbook to guide french students for three semesters. First, the textbook is incredibly expensive, even if one calculated the cost over three semester, I would hardly say that "$150" is worth 400 pages of pictures and useless exercises.
Now, onto the material. I don't know why so many pictures fill the pages of the book (though I would hope the artist is well-paid, since it looks like he put this thing together) but I think its an utter insult to my intelligence to have authors instigate that I need pictures to stimulate my interest. Maybe the authors should have spent their time filling the pages with words instead.
Meanwhile, the lessons that actually do exist are completely disorganized and scattered throughout the book with little regard to order or consistency. vocabulary lists at the end of every chapter contain only half the words listed throughout the chapter. the vocabulary list in chapter one only boasts a quarter of the words thrown at you in both chapter one and the preliminary chapter. oddly enough the list also includes adjectives, albeit adjectival use is never displayed in the chapter!
this book is a waste. find something organized and worthy of your money.

Editorial Review:

In 2000, the University of Southern California Trojans were named Collegiate Athletic Department of the 20th Century, Baseball Program of the Century, while coach Rod Dedeaux was the Baseball Coach of the Century. However, it was still felt that the greatest historical football program was USC's biggest rival, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In this lively history of Southern California football, Steven Travers makes the case that under the guidance of coach Pete Carroll (54-10), the Trojans have overtaken Notre Dame as the greatest ever collegiate tradition. USC has produced such legendary gridiron coaches and stars as Howard Jones, Frank Gifford, John McKay, O.J. Simpson, Anthony Davis, Lynn Swann, Ronnie Lott, Anthony Munoz, and Marcus Allen. They have tied Notre Dame for the most national championships (11) and Heisman Trophy winners (seven); have the best bowl record, the most Rose Bowl victories, the most All-Americans, the most pro players, the most first round draft picks, the most number one draft picks, the most Pro Bowlers, the most Super Bowlers, and the most Hall of Famers. In the years to come, the Trojan-Irish rivalry promises to be a titanic battle for continued supremacy. Their most recent stars, back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, are giants standing on the shoulders of giants. Illustrated with both historic and contemporary photos, this book celebrates college football's best, providing a blow-by-blow account of the greatest game ever played: the 2006 USC-Texas Rose Bowl.

Learn to listen for the ideal name!

The Perfect Baby Name is the first book of its kind-providing parents with a creative approach to selecting first and middle names that sound good with readers' surnames. A good combination of names is pleasing to the ear, easy to remember, and can help a child be popular and successful in life.

Utilizing the techniques found in poetry and phonetics, parents will discover how to examine a surname by the sum of its parts-and match it with the perfect first name. With this unique new method, parents can choose the baby name that everyone is looking for: the perfect one!

Here's how it works with the surname Green:

Break down the sounds: G, R, long E, and N. These are the four different sounds (or phonemes) in that name. Now refer to those four different lists in the back of the book.

The G list has names like Hugo and Morgan...

The R list has Rex and Aurora...

The E (long) list, Eli and Alicia...

The N list, Nathaniel and Lindy...

All of these names sound good with the surname Green, so now it's just a matter of personal preference. Readers can scan the lists for the name they like best and choose the perfect match!
