Tremendous Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Are you sick of pouring through the contemporary name books? Then pick up this treasure. Featuring more than 8,000 girls and boys names, the advantage to this resource is that it lists appropriate patron saints for most of the names, along with a very brief biography of such saints, the meaning of the name and includes the feast day for the patron.

For parents desiring to find Christian names for their children, this is an indispensible resource.

In addition to common Germanic, English, French, and Irish/Gaelic names, the book also features many African-American, Native American, and Arabic names as well.

You'll find such common names as Thomas, Anne, Susan, and David, as well as less common names such as Marva, Montana, LaShawna, and Moesha.

Where there is no appropriate patron saint for a given name, the book will examine the history of a name, break it down into parts, or find a patron that relates to the name's meaning so that very few names do not have a patron associated with them.

I recommend this book for any parent deciding on names for their children.

Editorial Review:

Five-Star Baby Name Advisor is a unique and invaluable book for parents who want to select a name that will give their child a head start in life. It contains more helpful information about each name than any other book—starting with star ratings (like the ones used to rate movies, hotels, and mutual funds).

Most name books are basically lists of names that include origin and meaning. This unique book gives parents lots of help in deciding which name to choose for their baby.  Here is a list of all the features you’ll find in the book.  Notice that most of the features (marked with an asterisk) can’t be found in any other book; and two features marked with asterisks can only be found in name books by Bruce Lansky:

-star rating*

-origin

-meaning

-gender usage** (showing whether names are used primarily for boys, primarily for girls, or equally for both)

-first impressions** (what images come to mind when names are called in school or seen on  job applications)

-popularity rankings and recent trends*

-spelling difficulty*

-pronunciation difficulty*

-versatility* (availability of versions of the name for informal and formal social occasions)

-the most famous namesakes

-common nicknames

-common variations

-final considerations* (pros and cons)

Selling Points

1.      This book contains more helpful information about the most popular names than any other book.

2.      It’s designed to help parents choose a name that will give their child a head start in life—and be a pleasure to live with (for both child and parent)

3.      Each name starts with a 5-star rating (used to rate movies, hotels, and mutual funds).

4.      The book provides a quick summary of the first impression the name makes on people when they hear the name or see it in print.

5.      The book also tells readers whether the name is usually used mainly for boys, mainly for girls, or equally for both.

6.      It also includes the name’s popularity ranking and recent trend.

7.      You’ll also find out how likely people are to misspell and/or mispronounce the name.

8.      And, how versatile the name is both for formal and informal occasions.

9.      The book only lists the most important famous namesakes which may affect the name’s image.

10.  And it only lists the most common nicknames and variations (rather than a seemingly endless list).

11.  Finally, Lansky provides advice that alerts readers to any problems or special considerations the name may have that would affect their choice.

12.  If you don’t already know, Lansky is by far the leading author of baby name books. His name books have sold over 8.5 million copies.

13.  It really is the smart new way to name a baby.

This was just what I was looking for, a simple list of names with their meanings in alphabetical order by gender. It even has lists of interesting names (Most popular in 1990, most popular names for twins, ...) throughout. Excellent book.

An excellent choice! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent choice if you need a baby name book--and what expectant parent doesn't? I bought another one which was way more expensive that wasn't up to scratch with this one. A high recommend, along with You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine Months of My Life

depends on what you're looking for in a baby name book... 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you're like me, and what you're looking for in a baby name book is to flip through and see what strikes you among a list of names you know how to spell and pronounce and have heard before, this book is a bit of a wash. It just has *too* many names, and 50% of the ones on any given page are going to be very culture-specific to a culture not your own, making it very hard to skim through looking for ones you personally might use. It would have been enormously helpful to separate the listings by ethnic origin.

However, if you're looking for something exotic, or as one reviewer mentioned, naming characters, this may just be the ticket, because it's chock-full of cool sounding Japanese, Hindi, Arabic, etc names. And as a watcher of anime, I found it interesting to read the meanings of familiar names from shows I've seen.

The meanings are *very* brief (typically 1-5 words), but adequate, and the spelling variations are helpful. If you just want to look up specific names and see the bare bones of what they mean, this book will get the job done for a very reasonable price with an impressive breadth. I just didn't find it very helpful in actually attempting to pick a name that met my criteria. The Baby Name Wizard book was much better for that.

    Editorial Review:

An expanded edition of 55,000+ Baby Names with over 60,000 names and 200 fun, helpful lists of names to consider. It also has the latest rankings for the top 100 boys¿ and girls¿ names and 1,500 names used for both genders with icons that show which names are used more for boys, more for girls, or about 50/50. And, it includes more than 5,000 Hispanic names and 5,000 African-American names. (Of course, it also includes well over 5,000 English, Latin, Hebrew, Greek, French, Irish, and German names and thousands of names from throughout Europe and Asia.)

Finally a Celtic baby names book with both pronunciation and background on the names! I am a writer and I found it particularly useful with my writing. Alternate spellings are also given.

    Editorial Review:

A dictionary of over 2,000 Celtic names from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany. But more than that, it gives the origin and meaning of each name plus traditional stories, myths or poems for selected names.

A handy pronunciation guide and variant names are also included.

Ideal for all those interested in Celtic culture, and in particular for anyone choosing a name for their child.

AT LAST A BOOK THAT GIVES YOU MUCH MUCH MORE THAN NAMES AND THEIRMEANINGS! sIURE YOU,VE GOT TO BE A BELIEVER IN KABBALAH AND JEWISHMYSTICISM, BUT HEY WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE IF YOU TRY TO SEE WHAT THIS REMARKABLE TRADITION HAS TO SAY. As an aside I tried comparing a dozen of my friends with what the book says their names tell you about them and I found it frighteningly and fascinatingly accurate most of them.... This is really a book that started hours of discussion in our study group and I cant recommend it highly enough . It sems to be runing out in bookstores so grab it it Amazon if its avasilable!

    Editorial Review:

Your Name is Your Blessing: Hebrew Names and Their Mystical Meanings is the first book of Hebrew names that offers not only a comprehensive list of ancient and modern names with their meanings, but also a mystical insight, by way of gematria (the total of its letter components), into the personality, the soul, the prophetic destiny, and the blessing of every person based on his or her name.

A complete Jewish-American name book. 5 out of 5 stars.
40 of 42 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be the best, most complete book of names for an English-speaking parent-to-be of Jewish heritage. Everything is included: English/Anglo-Saxon/American (even some Spanish and French), and of course, Yiddish, Biblical/Talmudic, and Israeli names.

Helpful in the naming game 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The best thing about this book was something that I saw in no other book. One of the ways we were looking at to name our child was to find words (or the meaning of the names for those we were naming for) and finding the hebrew word that meant that. This is the only book with a dictionary in the back of words (i.e., if you look up song, you will find Shira, if you look up Strong, you will find Ethan). So it was helpful when we were looking at naming in that way. There are so many names in here, it is great - not all of them are Jewish, per se, but all names seem to be in the book. It was extremely helpful in naming our child!

This book is the BEST book for researching Hebrew-English names. 5 out of 5 stars.

I started my business, [...], eleven years ago. This book has been, my "bible" since the beginning, augmented by a number of his other books esp. "The New Name Dictionary - Modern English and Hebrew Names." Kolatch is a consummate researcher of both the names and the biblical references. I trust his translations completely. All of his books are of this caliber. This man has my utmost respect. Sarahleah Hankes
