Interesting 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a really neat idea for a baby name book. I liked how it gave a list of what impressions various names gave people. You might love a name but forget that you'd be sharing it with a famous celebrity... or that the name gives people a certain impression. Many of the descriptions for the names were DEAD ON for people I knew. The names are listed first by "characteristic" and the names associated with that characteristic. Then there is an alphabetical listing of names. There are a few pages at the back where you jot your favorite boy and girl names, as well as another page for listing your "top ten" boy names and "top ten" girl names. There are a lot of common names and then some off-the-wall ones. Not an exhaustive list, but a good starter / mainstream naming book.

Editorial Review:

The New Baby Name Survey is an all-new edition of The Baby Name Survey Book which presents new profiles for every name

Based on data from a new survey of over 100,000 parents. The book lets parents know what people think of the most popular names and helps them pick names for their babies that make favorable impressions. The New Baby Name Survey also includes the origin, meaning, and famous namesakes for each name, as well as a name "profile" written by Bruce Lansky, the #1 name in baby name books. So, it can be used as a single resource, or in conjunction with one of Lansky's other name books (which contain a lot more names.)

A hilarious and astounding piece of history 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I've read a number of baby name books, but it never occurred to me that among them would be one dedicated to the WORST names possible.
Some of the names in here defy description. It's amazing to think of people actually being named things like Evil Blessing! And they're all from the U.S. Census!

I had a great time reading this with my kids on a recent roadtrip. Highly recommended to all parents: think of the names you could have saddled your kids with!

Editorial Review:

Throughout history, people have named their children truly terrible things, and this book has the proof. Michael Sherrod and Matthew Rayback combed through U.S. federal census records to find the absolute worst names parents have given their children. The result is this hysterical new take on the baby name book. Here are some samples of the hilarious names inside: Fanny Pack, Fanny Whiffer, Post Office, Warren Peace, Rubella Graves, Nice Carr, and Hell Hellickson. And then there are the names we thought Bart Simpson was making up as he prank called Moe's Tavern: Hugh Jass, Al Caholic, Anita Bath, Amanda Hugginkiss, and Maya Buttreeks. This book is also filled with original illustrations and great photos that take a stab at what some of these babies may have looked like. Bad Baby Names is truly a one-of-a-kind book that makes a great gift for a friend, family member, or just yourself. Either way, Bad Baby Names is sure to make you laugh.

Editorial Review:

Pierre Le Rouzic's The Name Book, intrigues its audience with a stunningly accurate description of their characters based solely on the name they bear. Containing over 9,000 names, this volume is a priceless encyclopedia of wisdom - a name book that has passed the test of time. This book is fun! An international bestseller with over 3 million copies sold outside the USA, it provides an accurate analysis of our personality based solely on the name we bare. Index includes over 9,000 names - described in 80 chapters. 85 graphic illustrations (called name portraits) convey the message in a glance. An invaluable resource for new parents or people wanting to change their name. Opening chapters explain why our names, culture, magnify, or restrict aspects of our personalities Provides guidelines for choosing correct names for new born babies or name changes. ~~~~~ "A name is a reservoir of energy, and this makes good sense" The constant repetition of the syllables of our names, "this harmony," ends up having a significant influence on the development of our personalities. Names contain secret vibrations we are unaware of, yet which exist nonetheless-just as we are unaware of the sound from an ultrasonic whistle that a dog hears perfectly well. If we admit the existence off these vibrations, which are different for each name, it is not hard to imagine that they can resonate with something inside us and trigger different reactions in us, according to the name we bare. This is to say, a name can change an individual, and can effect one's personality and to a certain extent, destiny. This helps us understand what at first seems unbelievable-that names can have a direct influence on people. ~~~ Pierre Le Rouzic ~~~ ~~~~~ "In every place and time, everyone has received a name. It is the first and most lasing influence we give to our children. Something this far reaching should not be mindlessly chosen according to the current trends of fashion. This book contains over 9000 names and Pierre Le Rouzie has spent 50 years researching their characteristics. It is worth your time to read the book-your children will thank you later."~~~~ ~~~ Rodney Charles, Bestselling author of Miracles of the Saint ~~~~~ ~~~ Published by 1stworldpublishing.com &1stworldlibrary.com ~~~

Character revealing, informative and accurate 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have used this book throughout the years as an incite into the personalities of friends, co-workers, and family. Not only has it been fun, but accurate as well.

People generally love their names and can have fun with them 4 out of 5 stars.

I am seeking another copy of this book, which has disappeared from my bookshelves. My kids and I had fun using this book for a parlor-game, where guests could look up the derivation and meaning of their given names. Whether or not the personality characteristics truly applied, people always had fun, and, as with dealing with such subjective things as horoscopes, always took away with them something to think about with respect to personal qualities and characteristics.

Pretty but not useful 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Beware of this book if you, like me, are pregnant and trying to find the perfect Irish name before your baby is born. The book is very pretty and informative about the names it actually has. However, although it has 90 pages of names there are only 1-3 names per page and several pages have pictures with no names. In fact, it has only 80 boy's names and 71 girl's names. I believe they took the most popular names and gave the reader a paragraph on the origin of each, which is nice but now I still need to buy another book to make sure I've also considered the many more obscure Irish names for my baby.

Editorial Review:

The Celtic tradition has given us some of our most beautiful and evocative names. "The Book of Irish Names" lists the popular names for both boys and girls, giving their derivations, pronunciations, meanings, and the legends associated with their historical and mythical namesakes. Comprehensive calendars of Irish saints' feast days also allow a baby's birth to be matched to the saint of the day. The names, which range from the ever-popular Liam and Bridget to the more unusual Aoife and Lochlainn, are accompanied with specially commissioned illustrations. "The Book of Irish Names" is an ideal present for parents-to-be. *Explores the traditions and histories surrounding the most popular Celtic names, which are now favourites throughout the English-speaking world. *Discover the legends and myths of ancient Ireland while choosing a name to suit a baby's personality. *Lists of Saints' Days allow a child's name to be matched with his or her birthday Saint.

Need the lowdown of first names? Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran, authors of the bestselling Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana and The Last Word of First Names, draw on years of research and experience to offer important insights like these:

Call your daughter Rose, but don't call your son Thorne.

Nature names are fashionable now, especially those that haven't been used much in the past. December, in other words is much coolers than April.

Although it sounds desert-like, Zahara is actually a Muslim and Swahili name meaning 'flower'. In Hebrew, it denotes brightness.

Diego, which is a Spanish form of James, has a lot of verve when combined with either a Latin or Anglo surname.

Though it has a hippyish feel, Jupiter has a legitimate history as a first name, used in the country as far back as the eighteenth century--in fact, Jupiter Hammon was the first African-American poet published here.

The Name "Apple" Is Only The Beginning.... 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The title may hail this book as "50,001 Best Baby Names," but it feels more like about 1,000 normal names and a list of everything from countries to body parts to animals that are supposed to be names. My wife and I hoped this book would give us a few ideas on what to name our recent addition to the family. We already had a list of potential names, but thought that this book would introduce us to a few new names or help us decide whether or not to keep a few borderline names. Well, it does have quite a few interesting names (if you can call them actual names) in it, but for the most part this book is a standard list of normal names with a bunch of idiotic and bizarre words thrown in to meet the 50,001+ quota.

This book is a waste of both time and money. You're best bet is to look up names on the internet. All of the names and meanings that Diane Stafford has compiled in this book can be found on the web for free. I only gave this book two stars because a couple of her lists were interesting to read. Overall, however, this book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Stay away!!

Gracias! 5 out of 5 stars.

Here is the definitive guide to finding Hispanic names for our precious babies. Well researched and user friendly, I have found a treasure. No where, until this book came out, have I seen a name book that illustrates and gives such pride to our great culture. Both in English and Spanish, it offers sections on names that come from nature, the church, saints, a saint's calender, as well as does a terrific job of offering indigenous names too.

Be sure to read the forward, the author's mother's story on how she named her was touching to the deepest heart, especially for any soon to be parents.

Lacking.... 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book and Nombres Exoticos Para Bebe. At first glance this book was 5 times thicker then NEPB, but upon futher review it lacked substance. It is a nice setup in the way they have the meaning of every name both in spanish and english. The problem was the names where mostly common spanish names such as Roberto or Alejandra and even some stranger names that just sounded funny. I still haven't finished going thru the whole book mainly because of the the lack of nice names. The type is small and I found myself squinting to read some of the meanings to my wife. The biggest disappointment was the book was split into half. Meaning from page X to X the meaning where in Spanish and from page X to X they where in english not sure why use this approach and waste ink and paper instead the meaning should of been together first in one language and then in the other not print the name twice. Maybe they where trying to make the book look big.?
