Pretty but not useful 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Beware of this book if you, like me, are pregnant and trying to find the perfect Irish name before your baby is born. The book is very pretty and informative about the names it actually has. However, although it has 90 pages of names there are only 1-3 names per page and several pages have pictures with no names. In fact, it has only 80 boy's names and 71 girl's names. I believe they took the most popular names and gave the reader a paragraph on the origin of each, which is nice but now I still need to buy another book to make sure I've also considered the many more obscure Irish names for my baby.

Editorial Review:

The Celtic tradition has given us some of our most beautiful and evocative names. "The Book of Irish Names" lists the popular names for both boys and girls, giving their derivations, pronunciations, meanings, and the legends associated with their historical and mythical namesakes. Comprehensive calendars of Irish saints' feast days also allow a baby's birth to be matched to the saint of the day. The names, which range from the ever-popular Liam and Bridget to the more unusual Aoife and Lochlainn, are accompanied with specially commissioned illustrations. "The Book of Irish Names" is an ideal present for parents-to-be. *Explores the traditions and histories surrounding the most popular Celtic names, which are now favourites throughout the English-speaking world. *Discover the legends and myths of ancient Ireland while choosing a name to suit a baby's personality. *Lists of Saints' Days allow a child's name to be matched with his or her birthday Saint.

The Name "Apple" Is Only The Beginning.... 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The title may hail this book as "50,001 Best Baby Names," but it feels more like about 1,000 normal names and a list of everything from countries to body parts to animals that are supposed to be names. My wife and I hoped this book would give us a few ideas on what to name our recent addition to the family. We already had a list of potential names, but thought that this book would introduce us to a few new names or help us decide whether or not to keep a few borderline names. Well, it does have quite a few interesting names (if you can call them actual names) in it, but for the most part this book is a standard list of normal names with a bunch of idiotic and bizarre words thrown in to meet the 50,001+ quota.

This book is a waste of both time and money. You're best bet is to look up names on the internet. All of the names and meanings that Diane Stafford has compiled in this book can be found on the web for free. I only gave this book two stars because a couple of her lists were interesting to read. Overall, however, this book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Stay away!!

Gracias! 5 out of 5 stars.

Here is the definitive guide to finding Hispanic names for our precious babies. Well researched and user friendly, I have found a treasure. No where, until this book came out, have I seen a name book that illustrates and gives such pride to our great culture. Both in English and Spanish, it offers sections on names that come from nature, the church, saints, a saint's calender, as well as does a terrific job of offering indigenous names too.

Be sure to read the forward, the author's mother's story on how she named her was touching to the deepest heart, especially for any soon to be parents.

Lacking.... 1 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this book and Nombres Exoticos Para Bebe. At first glance this book was 5 times thicker then NEPB, but upon futher review it lacked substance. It is a nice setup in the way they have the meaning of every name both in spanish and english. The problem was the names where mostly common spanish names such as Roberto or Alejandra and even some stranger names that just sounded funny. I still haven't finished going thru the whole book mainly because of the the lack of nice names. The type is small and I found myself squinting to read some of the meanings to my wife. The biggest disappointment was the book was split into half. Meaning from page X to X the meaning where in Spanish and from page X to X they where in english not sure why use this approach and waste ink and paper instead the meaning should of been together first in one language and then in the other not print the name twice. Maybe they where trying to make the book look big.?

Sci-Fi Baby Names: 500 Out of This World Baby Names from Anakin to Zardoz lives up to its title and then some. Each of the five hundred names presented is listed along with a source and trivia tidbit referring to characters of that name in science fiction movies, comics, television, and books. The names are categorized into traditional names ("George"), masculine names ("Cameron"), feminine names ("Talleah"), power names ("Quentin"), intellectual names ("Sigmund"), and exotic names ("Vultan"). A treat for sci-fi enthusiasts to page through, and a nice starting point for prospective parents interested in naming their child something a little bit different.

Editorial Review:

Babies are the courageous explorers of brave new worlds so why not name them after the most memorable characters in science fiction? Choose "Leia" (or "Leah") to honor the sister of Luke Skywalker. Choose "Neo" to salute the ultra-cool messiah from The Matrix. Hardcore fans can go even further with exotic names like "Barbarella," "Beldar," and "Tron" (just don't send us the therapy bills). Arranged by category for quick reference with chapters such as Power Names, Feminine Names, and Intellectual Names Sci-Fi Baby Names is a terrific gift for expecting parents and a wonderful roll call of our favorite science-fiction characters.

A good shem is better than good shemen 4 out of 5 stars.
27 of 28 people found this review helpful.

As it is said, `a good name is better than fragrant oil (tov shem mi shemen tov)." A straightforward good guide, and listings of male and female names, selected from Kolatch's other works which date back to 1948. Also includes about 200 unisex names, such as Ari, Avi, Dodi, Ariel, Doron, Lior, Sharon, Tzipor and Zohar. For each listing, Kolatch provides a meaning and a Hebrew equivalent. For example, Larry is Latin and directs the reader to see "Laurence." Laurence's listing states that is is latin meaning `laurel crown.' The Hebrew equivalent is listed as Kalil. Mario's listing is akin to Marcus, meaning warlike as in "Mars.". The Hebrew equivalent is listed as Mordechai. ZIPORA will direct the reader to TZIPORA, which, when found, states that it is from the Hebrew, meaning "bird." It's Hebrew equivalent is naturally, "Tzipora." Listings for Tzipori (my bird) and Tziporit and Tzipi occur close to Tzipora. George is listed as Greek, meaning farmer; its Hebrew equivalent is listed as Choresh. But there is no listing for Choresh. The book is fine for 98% of readers, but if you are wondering whether you should name your child Gilad with an Aleph or an Ayin, then you need to consult a book with Hebrew characters or a local Hebraist. I would like the book better if it included Hebrew spellings, and if it listed some famous personages for each name listing. For example, the listing for Boaz should mention where he occurs in the stort of Ruth; or Jose should mention the Aramaic speaking rabbis by that name

Editorial Review:

A handy trade paperback that presents thousands of appealing names from which parents can make a suitable selection for their newborns. Each entry gives the origin and meaning of the name and suggests one Hebrew equivalent. Includes Anglicized forms of the latest and most popular names used in Israel. A must for prospective parents.

Editorial Review:

Collins Gem Babies Names is number one in the best-selling stakes. Meet its Irish cousin! This detailed guide to more than 2,000 of the most popular Irish first names is the ideal gift for anyone wishing to choose an Irish name for their child, or interested in finding out a bit more about their own name. Irish names are spreading across the world. As well as being more common in Ireland, they now feature in most English-speaking countries of the world. The reason for this spread is not hard to find. Massive emigration, especially during the 19th century famines, left many people of Irish descent in Britain, the U. S., Canada, and Australia. These emigrants often had to give up the Irish language in favor of English, but they took their names with them, gave them to their children, and spread them in the new countries. Indeed some, such as Brian, are now so well-established that they are no longer considered Irish. Others have developed strong associations with their new countries, so that Oscar is sometimes thought of as Scandinavian, Barry and Sheila are associated with Australia, and for most people Darren is American. What then is an Irish name? In this book a very broad view is taken, with special attention paid to what has happened to names after they left Ireland. The names come from Gaelic (and are given in Gaelic and in an anglicized form), from translations from Irish forms of non-Irish names and from Irish surnames and words.
