too many studies 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book over all was very informative however there were way too many " studies" listed in the book if I just wanted strait graph's and comparisons of doula vs. non doula assisted births I would have looked for them online somewhere. and the pictures really need updated. The book seemed more like a giant 240 page sales pamphlet on why you should hire a doula.

Editorial Review:

More and more parents-to-be all over the world are choosing the comfort and reassuring support of birth with a trained labor companion called a "doula." This warm, authoritative, and irreplaceable guide completely updates the authors' earlier book, Mothering the Mother, and adds much new and important research. In addition to basic advice on finding and working with a doula, the authors show how a doula reduces the need for cesarean section, shortens the length of labor, decreases the pain medication required, and enhances bonding and breast feeding. The authors, world-renowned authorities on childbirth with combined experience of over 100 years working with laboring women, have made their book indispensable to every woman who wants the healthiest, safest, and most joyful possible birth experience.A Merloyd Lawrence Book

Editorial Review:

Book Description: Original, groundbreaking way of looking at the babyth and linking it to the difficult ¿clingy, cranky, cryingre they want to be close to their caregiver. This connection had never been understood or described until now. Usually, these difficult periods drive parents crazy and guilt-ridden. This book reassures parents that they are not to blame and that these difficult periods are part of normal development all babies go through. Knowing that their baby can so difficult at times, parents can tolerate their babybehavior much better. Based on extensive scientific research, The Wonder Weeks describes in easy-to-understand terms the incredible developmental changes that all babies go through during the first 60 weeks of their lives. Now this book, which has sold more than 1 million copies throughout the world in 12 languages, can help parents predict -within a week or two- when to expect the behavior that marks a new change. They will learn what is going on in the baby's brain and read examples of how other parents react at this stage and what they can do to help the child during this transition. It includes: -Week-by-week guide to baby's behavior -An explanation of the markers for cranky, clingy, crying (The three C¿s) behavior and how to react -Fun games and gentle activities you can do with your child -A description of your baby's perspective on the world around him and how it can help you understand the changes he's going through Research background: The authors studied chimpanzees in Africa with Jane Goodall and found evidence for distinct ¿regression periods¿ where infant behavior changes dramatically. This confirmed research that others had found previously in 12 more primate species. They returned to Europe to see if these regression periods could be established in human infants. There, they started to interview and observe mothers and their newborn babies in their homes weekly during the first 20 months of life. They found and reported on 10 regression periods. The first study was based on 15 families. Later these findings were confirmed in 32 more families in the Netherlands, 20 families in Spain, 17 families in Sweden and 30 families in England. The findings were reported in scientific journals and presented in this general book for parents. Reviews: "This is a very practical and entertaining window into the baby's first year and a half. Vanderijt and Plooij have observed and found the vulnerable times in an infant's development that I independently came to in my book Touchpoints (Perseus). The authors' observations and practical suggestions are wonderful." -T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., professor emeritus, Harvard Medical School. d Plooijfant development has enormous value for clinical use and scientific application. Not only have they explained the periods of puzzling, difficult behavior in infancy which so worry parents, they have also shown how these behaviors mark developmental leaps and have described the stages in the infanting. Together, this gives parents and professionals soundly based insight into babies¿ developing minds. Whaterijt and Plooij have described the play and communication that work best with babies at different ages and thus helped parents understand and connect sensitively with their babies. This parent-child connection is the major prerequisite for the development of secure, well-adjusted children. The Wonder Weeks is essential reading for everyone who works with infants ns, social workers, psychologists, and, of course, parents.¿ -John Richer, Ph.D., Dip. Clin. Here's the deal... 5 out of 5 stars.

So I've decided that I should also put my two cents worth in regarding the book and other comments here. This is Alicia, and yes, my son Ewan is mentioned in the book under the Special Needs section.

First off, is this book for everyone? Maybe not, no book, no theory, no treatment plan out there is for absolutely everybody. But give it a shot if you've got a child that is a picky eater or problem eater, it's 12 bucks that could change your life. Secondly, keep your mind open. If your mind is already closed to new ideas and new ways of doing things it's hard to help anyone, including your child.

Third, the whole 'encourages a child to eat junk food' notion is off base. The problem stems from the fact that these children have ALREADY self limited their foods to the, let's say, not the healthiest foods on the market. That's why many of the chains focus on moving from McNuggets and 'junk' food that someone else mentioned. My son was one of these children that the only 'meat' he would accept was a chicken McNugget--hence our chain started from there and grew. He now eats a variety of meats but in all honesty, he's not a real big meat lover, he eats some but not all meats...it's just not his 'thing'.

As for the moving from junk food to broccoli and healthy foods idea--you bet your behind my son did that. He is living proof that food chaining took him from pop-tarts, McNuggets, popcorn, and chips to eating foods like raw spinach leaves, broccoli, salsa, green peppers, cabbage, lettuce, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, apples, oranges, pineapple...well you get the point, a very healthy diet. I'd match my son's diet now up against the healthiest of stone age diets out there!

How in the name of all that is holy did that happen? Well, first this team actually looked at my son with open eyes and found an underlying medical problem called Eosinophilic Esophagitis that had been making eating a painful experience for him. So please don't scoff when you say, oh this is only for kids that are obviously really sick...some underlying problems are very hidden and can be a factor in why child is limiting their food intake. My son was one of those children that looked healthy and no one would have guessed that was going on.

Now let me also say that when you order this book you do not also get a complimentary magic wand in the mail. There is NO magic wand that transforms your child from a picky or problem eater into this kid like "Mikey" from the commercials that will eat anything. A good thing to keep in mind is that we ALL have foods we DON'T like! Food chaining, or any treatment plan for tackling these type of eating / feeding issues, takes time. It takes time, patience, understanding, and knowledge of how we eat and how we discover new foods and new tastes. Food chaining can be fun and exciting if you let it, if you open your mind to food, tastes, eating, and new experiences.

So I encourage those of you struggling with feeding and eating issues to give this book a good chance and read it. It's very user friendly with lots of terms and descriptions spelled out and is a very systematic way of looking at the problem!

I borrowed this book from the library - 3 times now. I need a copy for my shelf to re-read once in a while. I am a home-school mom with a difficult child (he is proud of it), and I also teach a co-op class of teenagers. I began applying techniques as I learned them with results that were surprising and quick. I could imagine the little cogs in their brains turning on the light in their eyes - if you are a teacher, you know how exciting that is!

As a Christian raising Christian children, I agree that the parent should have the final say-so in any given situation concerning their child. After all, they are ultimately responsible for their child's upbringing, well being, and even their actions in some cases. However, helping a child come to the correct conclusion themselves is not "walking on eggshells", it is more difficult than that. It is helping them grow into adults that can make good decisions and think through problems - a priceless skill that is difficult to teach.

Oddly enough, the techniques in this book helped give me more control as an authority figure, not less. I like this book because I can quickly pick it up and read what I need to, then get back to teaching.

If I may, a book that would work hand-in-hand with this one, but more in discipline (not punishment), is "The Heart of Anger" by Priolo. Both books have helped me teach and grow my willful son with love and direction.

Editorial Review:

The leading experts on parent-child communication show parents and teachers how to motivate kids to learn and succeed in school.

Using the unique communication strategies, down-to-earth dialogues, and delightful cartoons that are the hallmark of their multimillion-copy bestseller How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish show parents and teachers how to help children handle the everyday problems that interfere with learning.

This breakthrough book demonstrates how parents and teachers can join forces to inspire kids to be self-directed, self-disciplined, and responsive to the wonders of learning.

Content not advised during depression! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Describes Post Partum Depression

WARNING! Depression hurts and those who do suffer depression may not enjoy this because the main content is her struggle downward. The majority of this book is on the downward trending patterns. This is not happy reading. Do not read this if you just had a baby; do not gift this book to a person who you think has post partum depression and you just want them to "see" that depression is treatable. This is definitely NON-pregnancy reading.

If you have never been able to explain the magnitude and self loathing of depression, Brooke has done it for you. She spends a lot of time describing the slippery slope of feeling out of sorts and not very excited into feeling your absolute and unexplainable worst. In the audio version she reads the story herself and it really does get across the stymied feelings of those around her who could not understand what was going on. She should be on top of the world. Instead she felt it was on top of her.

She documents her way through the maze of depression and page after page you keep saying to yourself "And the Doctor was not on to this???". I think that is part of the point of her writing this, normal healthy people can get very serious depression and the people around them do not know how to react and they do not put depression into the mix. They just work around the equation hoping that this will pass. In her case it was never going to pass on its own.

She covers the awful trip back to herself and how as a person she was as perplexed at how to "feel better" as those around her were to have her be better. This is at times a story you want to speed up and skip over more and more of the exhaustive recounting. Again that is the point of the story- depression is an exhaustive journey.

We recommend the audio more that the written word because it has Brook telling her own story and you can feel her emotions as she tells her story. We also recommend that you buy this discounted because it is not a body work that you keep in your collection unless this topic is related to your field. For the average reader: this is a read and pass it along to another book or an ah-ha! reading to explain something that you may have already have gone through. Editorial Review:

When actress Brooke Shields gave birth to a beautiful baby daughter, Rowan, she felt like the luckiest woman in the world. But moments later, everything changed. For months after the birth, all Brooke could do was lie in bed and stare at the wall. When she wasn't sobbing her heart out she felt desperate and isolated, and she dreaded Rowan's presence. Whenever she looked at her daughter, a numbness swept over her and froze her to the core. All Brooke wanted to do was kill herself. Although she didn't realise this at the time, Brooke was suffering from postnatal depression, a crippling condition that affects one in ten new mothers. With astonishing honesty and a refreshingly wry sense of humour, Brooke Shields writes about her battle with postnatal depression, and her slow path to recovery. In this brave and warm memoir, she lifts the lid on this taboo subject that is still widely misunderstood, giving hope to the countless women who suffer from this debilitating illness.

The book I wish I had written 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I am a play therapist, author of "The Successful Divorce, In The Eyes of the Child" course and have taught parenting divorced for nine years. This is the book that says it all. The authors teach in clear logical manner how to co parent your children. They are sensitive to the pain both parents and children feel post divorce and teach how to proceed in parenting. I frequently use sections of their book in teaching to remind parents that they must still work together enough to meet children's needs. This is a concise book, no long drawn out narratives or tales of others pain... just the facts and how to avoid the pitfalls. I and the children of divorce, owe these authors a huge thank you. Their new book is also great,

Editorial Review:

This book helps parents in the aftermath of divorce learn to sustain a healthy co-parenting relationship. “Conflict and Parenting” explores parental conflict and its effects on children, conflict resolution, and the importance of forging a co-parenting relationship. “Co-Parenting Guidelines” offers specifics for solving day-to-day problems, disciplining, and handling conflict during transitional times and special events.

Wonderful! Nice to see feelings in print! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our first child, our son Wyatt, was stillborn and it has been the most devastating event of our entire lives. I bought this book after a fellow angel parent recommended it and absolutely loved it. It is so "nice" to see all the thoughts and feelings you have after losing a child right there in print. It makes you realize you're not going crazy, that those thoughts and feelings are legitimate, and that you are not alone. I carried this book everywhere with me and would highlight phrases that were personal to me. It really helped me understand the loss of our son and give me strength and courage to go on with our lives while still keeping his memory alive. I'm so sorry to those of you having to look at this book, but I hope it can help you as much as it has helped me.

Editorial Review:

The heartache of miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death affects thousands of U.S. families every year. Empty Cradle, Broken Heart offers reassurance to parents who struggle with anger, guilt, and despair after such tragedy. Deborah Davis encourages grieving and makes suggestions for coping. The book includes information on issues such as the death of one or more babies from a multiple birth, pregnancy interruption, and the questioning of aggressive medical intervention. There is also a special chapter for fathers as well as a chapter on "protective parenting" to help anxious parents enjoy their precious living children. Doctors, nurses, relatives, friends, and other support persons can gain special insight. Most importantly, parents facing the death of a baby will find necessary support in this gentle guide. If reading this book moves you to cry, try to accept this reaction. Your tears merge with those of other grieving parents. You are not alon! e.
